So Saturday morning, in anticipation of the game, I'm driving around getting supplies for the home opener and listening to Fox Sports radio. One of the pundits on the radio continues to annoy me, and I just know this guy has never been anywhere west of the Mississippi. He keeps saying,... O.J.'s Guilty;
No, it's not the other USC Sports star. This one plays basketball. OJ Mayo was a highly recruited freshman guard for the Trojans last year. Now, he's got a lot of explaining to do. It seems that Mayo got paid while playing at USC and even before that time. Early this year, OJ was also in the press for accepting tickets to an NBA basketball game.
Lets face it, players getting money while playing College Sports is an issue that isn't going away soon. For young superstars that play basketball and football there is going to be a lot of temptation but rules are rules. He shouldn't of been involved in this situation. If he's telling the truth and he didn't take any money, great. But he probably did and deserves to punished to the maximum extent of the law.
Former USC basketball player O.J. Mayo, a projected lottery pick in this year's NBA draft, received thousands of dollars in cash, clothes and other benefits in apparent violation of NCAA rules while he was still in high school and during his one year in college, a former Mayo associate told ESPN's "Outside the Lines."
Louis Johnson, who was a part of Mayo's inner circle until recently, said Mayo accepted around $30,000 in cash and gifts during the past four years from Rodney Guillory, a 43-year-old Los Angeles event promoter. In addition to cash, the gifts included a flat-screen television for Mayo's dorm room, cell phone service, a hotel room, clothes, meals and airline tickets for Mayo's friends and a relative, according to Johnson, others with knowledge of the gifts and store receipts. Dumb and Dumber
Tim Floyd is a bad coach and a horrible man. Just do the right thing coach, follow the rules. For some reason I think that he thinks that "bailing out Mayo" means that this thing can just be swept under the couch. Oh well. We'll see.
USC coach takes heat for Mayo
Posted: Thursday January 24, 2008 07:01AM ET
USC Coach Tim Floyd said Wednesday that he told star freshman O.J. Mayo that he could accept free Lakers tickets and that if anybody should be punished for potential NCAA violations, it should be the coach. "My feeling is that if there's a mistake made, it was made by me," Floyd said. "If they want to suspend me for a game, suspend me for a game, but not the kid. He did the right thing." Floyd said he thought it was acceptable for Mayo to receive complimentary tickets from Denver Nuggets All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony, whom Mayo has known since the seventh grade, because the players were friends. Mayo attended the Lakers' 116-99 victory over the Nuggets on Monday at Staples Center. Tim Floyd is a bad coach and a horrible man. Just do the right thing coach, follow the rules. Tsk Tsk Tsk Reggie Bush
In an upcoming book, a would-be San Diego sports marketer provides new details regarding allegations that he gave Reggie Bush tens of thousands in cash while Bush was still at USC.
"Tarnished Heisman" shifts much of the focus from Bush's parents -- who also allegedly received benefits -- to the star running back. However, while the book hints that USC coaches may have known about some of the arrangements, it does not provide evidence that any school official was aware of alleged improper gifts.
Hmmm...what a surprise that Pete Carroll is suddenly strongly considering returning to the NFL - just as his program could face sanctions if violations are proven. Go, Pete, go! USC's Carroll interested in Falcons' opening
Gosh, I hope this is true. Not b/c I don't think my Bruins can overtake this new generation 'SC dynasty, but mainly b/c I hate Pete Carroll with a passion. Have you watched a USC game lately? His histrionics on the field....annoying. His cocky trash talking...annoying. Did anyone notice that his players managed to ring up a handful of "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalties in most games due to taunting, trash talking, late hits, etc...?
Please, Pete - go back to the NFL and remind everyone that you were a crappy NFL coach that had to go to college to prove his worth.
Don't worry, when the Falcons spit you out, I'm sure some long forgotten past college power (see: Miami, Penn St) will be ready & waiting for you.
"USC coach Pete Carroll is interested in the Atlanta Falcons' head coach opening and is expected to speak with Atlanta owner Arthur Blank via phone Wednesday, sources at the American Football Coaches Convention in Anaheim told ESPN's Joe Schad.
Pete Carroll has been rumored for many head coaching vacancies in the NFL in recent years.
Blank is expected to offer full control of personnel decisions to Carroll and the sources said that is what intrigues Carroll most." Gosh, I hope this is true. Not b/c I don't think my Bruins can overtake this new generation 'SC dynasty, but mainly b/c I ha... more
