CBS News hides embarrassing Palin tape in exchange for exclusive interviews

CBS Evening News insiders say the censoring of the Palin interview was orchestrated by CBS News heads and Couric in an effort to show the McCain campaign that they should choose the struggling nightly news program for their exclusive interviews."

Palin Effect on Ratings Only Modest for CBS
Katie Couric’s newsmaking interviews with the Republican vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, last week had only a slight impact on the ratings for her CBS newscast. But if the network could have added up all the other viewers the interviews (and its spoof) racked up, on places like CNN, YouTube and “Saturday Night Live,” Ms. Couric would surely have been more seen and talked about than in any week since she began her tenure as anchor.
Ms. Couric received a rush of attention for the two interviews, in which Ms. Palin, governor of Alaska, spoke haltingly on, among other topics, her state’s “narrow maritime border” with Russia. Clips turned up across the spectrum of television and Web sites.
The first interview last Wednesday, for example, has been viewed more than 1.4 million times on YouTube, while the parody of the interview on “SNL” was streamed more than 4 million times on NBC.com, viewed in full more than 600,000 times on YouTube and in shorter clips many more hundreds of thousands of times.
Still, the “CBS Evening News” gained only about 10 percent in audience from the previous week — and it was actually down from the same week the year before. The newscast averaged just under 6 million viewers for the week, up from 5.44 million the previous week. A year ago Ms. Couric’s program drew about 6.2 million viewers. (CBS was also a distant third last week behind ABC, which won with 8.07 million viewers, and NBC, with 7.98 million.)
The CBS newscast didn’t even record its highest audience totals last Wednesday and Thursday, when the interviews were broadcast. Monday was the network’s best-rated night of the week.
But the week was still considered, by executives from both CBS and its rivals, to be among the best Ms. Couric has experienced since she joined the newscast two years ago. Triple Threat; Hannah, Ike, & Josephine Brewing Up Trouble
MIAMI (CBS4) ― Tropical Storm Hanna continues to blast the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and Haiti with gusty wind and torrential rain.
At 2 p.m., the center of Hanna was located about 420 miles southeast of Nassau; at latitude 20.6 north, longitude 72.9 west.
Hanna has drifted to the west-southwest for much of Tuesday. The storm is expected to begin moving to the northwest Tuesday night or Wednesday. On this track it will move over the southeastern Bahamas Tuesday evening and central Bahamas on Wednesday.
Hanna grew into a hurricane Monday but was downgraded Tuesday morning.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 70 mph with higher gusts. Hanna could regain hurricane strength Wednesday or Thursday.
Hanna's path is uncertain. One forecaster at the National Hurricane Center says "it could hit anywhere from Miami to the Outer Banks of North Carolina."
A hurricane warning remains in effect for the central and southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the northern coast of Haiti from Le Mole St. Nichoas to the northern border with the Dominican Republic.
Hanna is expected to produce 4 to 8 inches of rain over the southeastern Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos and eastern Cuba; some isolated areas could receive up to 12 inches. Rainfall of 6 to 10 inches is possible over the Dominican Republic and Haiti which could cause life threatening mud slides and flash floods. Swells from Hanna are expected to increase the risk of dangerous rip currents along portions of the Southeast coast over the next couple of days.
NASA has delayed the move of the space shuttle Atlantis from an assembly building at Florida's Kennedy Space Center to the launch pad by at least one day. The move had been scheduled for Tuesday in preparation for an October mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.

TS Ike Strengthens In Central Atlantic
MIAMI (CBS4) ― The ninth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Ike, has strengthened a little over the central Atlantic.
At 11:00 a.m. the center of Tropical Storm Ike was located about 1,110 miles east of the Leeward Islands, near latitude 18.9 North and longitude 45.0 West. The storm is headed west at 18 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 60 mph with higher gusts. This general motion is expected to continue during the next two days.
Some strengthening is forecast in the next few days. Some models show the storm becoming a hurricane on Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Josephine Forms Off Africa
MIAMI (CBS4) ― Along with Tropical Storms Hanna and Ike, South Florida now has to keep an eye on Tropical Storm Josephine.
The tenth Tropical Depression of this year's hurricane season has formed into Josephine in the far eastern Atlantic.
At 11 a.m., the center of Josephine was about 120 miles south-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands; latitude 13.2 north, longitude 25.3 west. The system is moving to the west near 15 mph and is expected to track to the west and northwest over the next several days. On this forecast track the center of TD 10 will remain south of the Cape Verde Islands and pass them Tuesday night.
The system's maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph and some strengthening is expected in the next 24 hours.

As if Katie Couric didn’t already have enough problems.
Weighed down by record-low ratings at the anchor desk of “CBS Evening News,” and by reports suggesting she will leave that post two years before her multimillion-dollar contract expires, Couric now has civil rights groups — mostly Hispanic — on her back.
And for good reason.
The CBS newscast that carries her name recently aired a one-sided and inaccurate report about illegal immigrant women who give birth to their children in the United States. The news story challenged the broader constitutional law of birthright citizenship and stated — without providing the correct context — that the births cost U.S. taxpayers millions of dollars annually. BABY FORCED TO SMOKE POT
PATASKALA, Ohio -- A camcorder sold at a pawn shop in one Ohio town had a disturbing video left inside -- it showed a toddler being given marijuana.
Police in Pataskala, Ohio arrested an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl.
They are accused of holding up a lit marijuana cigarette to the child's mouth.
On the video, the 2-year-old coughs and turns her head away.
The video was discovered when the camcorder was sold at a pawn shop and the shop owner contacted police.
Police said the 16-year-old girl was the one holding the baby.

Couric set to moderate debate
Hillary Clinton has agreed to a Sunday, April 27, primetime debate in North Carolina, which would be "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric's first turn to moderate a presidential debate.
Now all that remains is for Barack Obama, who previously accepted CBS' offer of a debate April 19, to agree to the new date.
"It is more than passing strange that in the year when you have the first serious woman candidate and the first serious African American candidate, the only woman anchor hasn't had a role," said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. Obama crushing Clinton and McCain in new national polls
Two new national polls show Barack Obama surging against Hillary Clinton in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
In a New York Times-CBS News poll, 54 percent of Democratic primary voters say they would prefer the party to nominate Barack Obama while 38 percent prefer Hillary Clinton. That is a sharp shift in Obama's favor from the previous poll in late January, when voters were split evenly, 41 percent each for Obama and Clinton.
The poll found similar swings in Obama's favor on other questions. For example, asked how they would vote if the race were between Obama and Republican John McCain, 50 percent said they would support Obama to 38 percent for McCain, while respondents were split evenly, at 46 percent each, when the choice was between McCain and Clinton. Obama gained ground within nearly every sector, the poll found. Sail Boat to Crusie from Africa/Europe to the USA for Peace
On March 8th, 2008, The Beija Flor, a 54 foot sailing vessel with Skipper Detlef Kowalewski and his crew/band will set sail from off the coast of Africa and Europe for a two month trip as the EUROROCK PEACE FULL SAIL that will again begin in Florida.
EuroRock, founded by LouRicca, a peace activist is a tour for Peace that has toured America with musicians from all over the world and has been going on three years as of now. EuroRock now goes to the oceans with Peace Full Sail and known Musicians from all over the world to help bring peace across the Atlantic Ocean to the rest of the world.
Ricca plans to film this voyage with an experienced cinematographer he has hired to document the voyage, the music and the history being made.
The trip will hopefully be broadcast and streamed on the Internet every other day live from the boat as it sails to its destination bringing Peace. "At the destination, Tampa Bay, and Jamaica,we will hold a concert from the ships deck and broadcast it live as well. Much Publicity will take place. We are also filming the whole trip for a documentary."

Ricca says they will have to do without if they cannot find the sponsor, but there will be pictures and film available for our documentary.
