War on the Middle Class
A project I did for contemporary issues class. we had to pick a social issue and go with it. My main criticism with this film is the Jena 6 section. I feel this section is relevant because it shows how right can easily be taken away from the wealthy. The gap between the have and have-nots are growing farther and farther apart. "We're here to say the federal government has a responsibility," the Rev. Al Sharpton told CNN. "Since the Justice Department would not come to the people, today we're bringing the people to the Justice Department." Thousands turn out in D.C. to march for tougher laws on hate crimes. ... more -
Jena Six's Mychal Bell Back to Prison
A judge has ordered him to jail for 18 months for violating his parole on an earlier juvenile conviction. You can't help but wonder if this is tied to the current case though, no? At least he's going to juvenile prison this time though - that seems at least a little bit more appropriate to me. Stranger posted bond for Jena 1
Good samaritans are back! It was a stranger who posted Mychal Bell's bail. "Dr. Stephen Ayers, who lives about 135 miles away, said he felt compelled to help the family of Mychal Bell by posting the teen's bond and allowing him to go home for the first time in 10 months." Jena 6 is now 5
Teenager Mychal Bell was released on bail, after prosecutor said he would not try him as an adult. So what about the others. The article says that under Louisiana law 17-years-old means that you are tried as an adult. The others were 17 when they battered victim, Mychal was 16. Therefore, he can't be charged as an adult. Finally we can see the law working how it should. However,he still faces juvenile court charges. Does this level the playing field as the article says? What would? What do we want the outcome to be? Live from Jena
This post looks at the Jena 6 trial and the resulting movement that has grown up around it. It really looks at the link between pro-social movements, the media and ad world. It questions how we can reach young people as professionals and not fully value their desire to do something for the good of others. Let me know your thoughts on the role of the internet, UGC and Current in building movements. This post looks at the Jena 6 trial and the resulting movement that has grown up around it. Obama acting white?
Apparently Jesse Jackson thinks so. Why? Obama's reaction to the Jena Six controversy. Isn't Obama half white? So wouldn't that be okay to act white? How does one act white anyways? Politically I think it would be a hard situation to be in, to not alienate your voters. He (Obama) would be a P*** though if he did feel strongly one way or the other but did not say anything. Ahh such is politics. Apparently Jesse Jackson thinks so. Why? Obama's reaction to the Jena Six controversy. Isn't Obama half white? So wouldn't that be o... more

The Jena 6 Rally
Thousands descended on Jena, Louisiana today to protest the case against 6 black high school students who were charged with attempted murder after a school yard fight. Many people feel that the charges against the boys were racially motivated, and that the treatment the white students (and in one case, adults) involved in the various events prior to "the fight" received, from the legal as well as the school system, was much less harsh. The effect of today's rallies remain to be seen - it could sway the prosecutor to drop the charges, though he seems unlikely to do so, or it could make an already tense situation even more so when the town is left to itself again in the coming days.CNN has live video of the scene where you can see tons of people milling around. They also have a fairly awkward interview with one of the mom's, her charged son standing beside her unable (legally) to say a word the whole time.
