New South Wales bans cigarette displays
Shops in Australia's biggest state will have to keep cigarettes out of sight of their customers under new anti- smoking regulations, New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma said Wednesday.
'Smoking is a one-way ticket to misery,' Iemma said. 'There's only one reason why the tobacco companies do this sort of glossy advertising in shops and supermarkets, and that's to keep smokers hooked and hook our kids.'
Fines for smoking in cars with children under 16 are also to be put on the statute book.
'For many adults it's a one-way ticket to a cancer ward or the morgue, but the children don't get the choice,' Iemma said.
Australia has one of the lowest levels of smoking anywhere in the world, with only 18 per cent of men and 16 per cent of women regular smokers, down from 40 per cent of men and 32 per cent of women in 1983.
A recent study showed that the steep decline reflected the power of public health messages, punitive taxes on cigarettes and restrictions on advertising. Australia's first anti-smoking law was passed 97 years ago, and the last change made pubs, clubs and outdoor eating places smoke free. AA attendees amongst highest Coffee and cigarette consumers

While the most common cause of death in long-term recovering alcoholics is related to the health consequences of cigarette smoking, Martin noted, recent epidemiological studies have shown that coffee consumption is not harmful to health and may, in fact, reduce the risk of death from suicide, certain cancers, and other diseases.
While that may be true, noted Robert Swift, professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University Medical School, little is known about coffee's role vis-à-vis abstinence, whether drinking coffee makes it easier or harder to stay sober. "It's possible that coffee is even a gateway drug, with coffee drinking beginning at about the time persons begin using alcohol. In addition, a potential negative interaction is coffee's known negative effects on sleep. Many alcoholics in long-term recovery frequently have trouble with sleep, and coffee consumption could make sleep problems worse."

Snack-size cigarettes from tobacco giant
Philip Morris has unveiled plans for a smaller cigarette to cater for the age of the smoking-ban. 'Marlboro Intense' will deliver the same potency while taking less time to puff, and is designed to appeal to employees who are forced to take quick outdoor cigarette breaks while at work, often in cold weather. The cigarette, which is 7.2cm long, compared with the normal 8.5cm.
