Have you ever bought a cd you wish you could return? If it's a Ubiquity album you can. I'm sitting by my computer listening to the new Clutchy/Shawn Lee album staring at the case as if that would give me some clue as to who Clutchy Hopkins is...but of course it doesn't. What I did notice though was on the bottom left was "The Ubiquity Guarantee" which states "...if you are unsatisfied with this release for any reason, be it defective disc, broken packaging or the musical content, we will replace it." Send back the cd and receipt and they'll send you an "equal product of your choice guaranteed". Who does that? Have you ever bought a cd you wish you could return? If it's a Ubiquity album you can. • Bob Dylan's 'Mississippi' Available For Free Download

Columbia Records today announced the U.S. premiere of the Bob Dylan song “Mississippi”, exclusively available as a free download for a limited time on Amazon.com. “Mississippi”, previously unreleased domestically in this form, will be commercially available on October 7, 2008 as part of Bob Dylan’s Tell Tale Signs - The Bootleg Series Vol. 8.

Originally recorded for the Grammy Award-winning Time Out Of Mind album in 1997, a drastically different rendering of “Mississippi” finally made its appearance on 2001’s “Love And Theft”. The version found on Tell Tale Signs, likely one of the first takes of the song recorded, can be described as stripped-down and soulful, and features producer Daniel Lanois on electric guitar.

Bob Dylan's Tell Tale Signs is the 8th installment in the best-selling and critically lauded Bootleg Series which launched in 1991. Available in 2-CD and 3-CD deluxe formats, Tell Tale Signs features previously unreleased recordings and alternate versions of tracks from sessions which generated some of Bob Dylan's most acclaimed and commercially successful albums from the last two decades, including Time Out Of Mind, Love And Theft, Modern Times and Oh Mercy

    • Blogger Arrested Over GN'R Leaks

Federal authorities say they have arrested a blogger suspected of streaming songs from Guns N' Roses unreleased album, "Chinese Democracy," on his Web site.

FBI agents arrested 27-year-old Kevin Cogill this morning (Aug. 27) on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws. Federal authorities say Cogill posted nine unreleased Guns N' Roses songs on Antiquiet.com in June. The songs were later removed but spread quickly across the Internet.

According to an arrest affidavit, Cogill admitted to agents that he posted the songs on his Web site.

"Chinese Democracy" has been in the works for more than a decade, with frontman Axl Rose the only remaining original member of the once mighty group. Rumblings that the album may finally be out this fall, possibly as a Best Buy exclusive, have not been confirmed by Guns N' Roses or its management.

    • Sonic Youth Back in the studio after 18 YEARS!

For the first time in eighteen years, Sonic Youth are a full-fledged indie-rock band again. After completing their contract for longtime major label Geffen Records with the release of 2006’s Rather Ripped, the group will release their next record on an indie label, Thurston Moore tells Rolling Stone. “There’s one label we are certainly going to go with at this point,” he says. “But I don’t think I’m allowed to disclose that right now. I don’t want to risk having a shit storm.” Moore does reveal, however, that Sonic Youth are currently in the writing-stage of their next album.

In November, they’ll hit the studio to cut tracks, with the goal of releasing the disc sometime next spring. “I’ve written a half-dozen song ideas,” he says. “I try not to complete them so much. Last time we got together, we were creating sort of new band-zone-vibe sort of things.” As for returning to the indie world again, Moore is psyched. “It feels great,” he says. “The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation. But that’s the way it goes.”

    • Ozzy Osbourne Inks New Three Album Deal With Sony

The following report is courtesy of Ray Waddell from Billboard.biz:

Ozzfest 2008, with METALLICA and OZZY OSBOURNE as headliners, grossed nearly $3.5 million and drew close to 30,000 people to Dallas' Pizza Hut Park, according to producers Sharon Osbourne and AEG Live. Sponsored by Affliction Clothing, this year's Ozzfest marked the return of the 13-year-old music brand after a free run at amphitheaters last year.

This year's one-off event did "fantastically well," Sharon Osbourne tells Billboard.biz. "The one thing is you want for the kids to go away and keep talking about what a great show it was, and that's what they're doing."

Osbourne says plans are for Ozzfest to return to Dallas again next summer, likely as a two-day festival, and other cities are also being considered.

"Ozzfest ain't going anywhere," she says. "We do try and shake things up and experiment, we're not the old donkey that plods on doing the same shit."

Meanwhile, 2008 has been a great year for Ozzy, Osbourne adds. "Ozzy had an unbelievable last record (Black Rain), an unbelievable year touring, and he's in the studio right now recording," she says. "We just signed a new deal with Sony for three more albums and we ain't going nowhere."

    • 30 Seconds To Mars Sued For $30 Million By Virgin

30 Seconds To Mars has been hit by a lawsuit that claims the band owes its record label, Virgin Records America, three albums. The $30 million suit, filed August 15 in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges the band "repudiated" its 1999 contract in July by refusing to deliver the albums, according to an Associated Press report.

The band, fronted by actor Jared Leto, sold a million copies of their last album, A Beautiful Lie and hit the mainstage at Warped in 2006.

A spokesperson for the band told TMZ that 30 Seconds To Mars has sold more than 2 million albums for Virgin and has not been paid accordingly.

Jared Leto has responded to the lawsuit. In his open letter, he explains:

"We had been signed to our record contract for 9 years. Basically, under California law, where we live and signed our deal, one cannot be bound to a contract for more than 7 years. [...] It is a law that protects people from lengthy, unfair, career-spanning contracts. [...] We have been sued because roughly 45 days ago we exercised our legal right to terminate our old, out of date contract, which, according to the law is null and void.

"If you think the fact that we have sold in excess of 2 million records and have never been paid a penny is pretty unbelievable, well, so do we. And the fact that EMI informed us that not only aren't they going to pay us AT ALL but that we are still 1.4 million dollars in debt to them is even crazier.

"We have lost many of the people that were near and dear to us at Virgin/EMI and crucial to the success of 30 Seconds to Mars. There is not a single employee at Virgin Records who was working at the company when we signed."

    • QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS: New Album Details Revealed

QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS will release their new album, "The Cosmos Rocks", in Europe on September 15 and the U.S./Canada on October 14 via EMI. A single, "C-lebrity", will precede the album on September 8.

"C-lebrity" was written and produced by Brian May, Paul Rodgers and Roger Taylor.

Many of QUEEN's best-known songs have been written in humor, and "C-lebrity" follows in this pattern; it is a comment on the celebrity-driven times in which we live where the myriad of reality-based TV shows are producing a generation of C-lebrities

The track received its first airing as an exclusive on TV's "Al Murray's Happy Hour", since when, according to Brian May, "we went back in and roughed up the studio version a bit. I think it gives a fair idea of the kind of energy on the album."

Commented drummer Roger Taylor: "'C-lebrity' is really a comment on the current concept of fame — success and all that goes with it. Getting your face on TV is enough — talent doesn't really enter into the equation. 'Celebrity' is an overused and devalued word today."

Vocalist Paul Rodgers added: "I see the song as Roger's take on the increasing emphasis on fame for its own sake. It's quite ironic that Andy Warhol's statement that everyone will have fifteen minutes of fame is becoming something of a reality, although it may be down to fifteen seconds in today's world of instant communication."

"The Cosmos Rocks" album, produced and performed by Brian May, Paul Rodgers and Roger Taylor, and written by QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS, featuring 13-all new songs, is out to coincide with the mid-September start of the European tour. It marks the first QUEEN album of new material since 1995.

      "The Cosmos Rocks" track listing:

      01. Cosmos Rockin'
      02. Time To Shine
      03. Still Burnin'
      04. Small
      05. Warboys
      06. We Believe
      07. Call Me
      08. Voodoo
      09. Some Things That Glitter
      10. C-lebrity
      11. Through The Night
      12. Say It's Not True
      13. Surf's Up . . . School's Out!
      14. (small reprise)

A special edition CD/DVD featuring a bonus disc containing a recording of QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS at Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo on October 27, 2005 will also be made available.

The DVD track listing is as follows:

      01. Reaching Out (Hill / Black)
      02. Tie Your Mother Down (May)
      03. Fat Bottomed Girls (May)
      04. Another One Bites The Dust (Deacon)
      05. Fire And Water (Rodgers / Fraser)
      06. Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Mercury)
      07. Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together) (May)
      08. These Are The Days Of Our Lives (Queen)
      09. Radio Ga Ga (Taylor)
      10. Can't Get Enough (Ralphs)
      11. I Was Born To Love You (Mercury)
      12. All Right Now (Rodgers / Fraser)
      13. We Will Rock You (May)
      14. We Are The Champions (Mercury)
      15. God Save The Queen (Trad. Arr. May)

Video footage of QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS performing a new song, "C-lebrity", on the April 4, 2008 edition of the UK's ITV "Al Murray's Happy Hour" can be viewed below.

QUEEN's last studio album was "Made In Heaven", released in November 1995 and containing the last recordings with Freddie. The LP became the band's biggest selling studio album, with world sales in excess of 20 million.

    • Cheap DVDs: HMV to use tax loophole

A controversial tax avoidance scheme which HMV operates on its website is to be extended to the high street, allowing customers to buy DVDs, CDs, Blu-ray Discs, and games for lower prices from instore kiosks.

The items will be free from the usual 17.5% VAT charges on conventional purchases, as the items are subsequently delivered to the customer from the Channel Islands tax haven of Guernsey.

If copied by other high-street chains and supermarkets, it could divert hundreds of millions of pounds from the Treasury. Woolworths is also testing similar terminals in three stores.

    • 16-layer CD can now hold 400 gigabytes

Tokyo (Japan) –A new generation of high capacity optical discs could be on the way as Pioneer claims to have developed read-only disc media with 16 layers and a total capacity of 400 GB. The company believes that the technology could “greatly reduce the number of discs to be used and therefore contribute to the conservation of resources.”

The technology provides 25 GB of room on each layer, bringing the capacity of one 16-layer disc to 400 GB. While the 25 GB per-layer capacity is equivalent to what Blu-ray provides, Pioneer did not say which technology its new discs are based upon and did not even mention whether blue laser or red laser technologies were employed. However, Pioneer stated that the 16-layer discs would be “compatible” with current BD discs.

In a press release, Pioneer simply stated that “this development has bolstered Pioneer's confidence in the feasibility of a large-capacity optical disc, which is expected to become necessary in the near future.” For now, the company has only succeeded in creating a 16-layer read-only optical disc, but the company believes that it can transfer the technology to recordable discs as well.

L'industria discografica, una delle più redditizie al mondo, è nel pieno di una crisi epocale. La diffusione della banda larga e del peer-to-peer hanno fatto crollare le vendite di cd, il prodotto di punta del settore. L'industria discografica è destinata a scomparire? Back in the early and middle '80s, Culturcide bypassed then-prevalent synth-pop in favor of a form of electronic punk rock that evolved into industrial. This odds-and-sods collection offers 12 demos, live jams and unreleased tracks for the coroner's inquest. It's certainly a horrible place for dilettantes to start, as the raw quality of the recordings — a third of the tracks are rehearsal takes — presents you with something like Culturcide at 151 proof, a glimpse into the hostile recesses of the band's creative process.
