    • Most destructive dog? Not a rotweiler, or a pitbull...

Or even an Alsatian, but a Great Dane. Now where's the news in that I hear you ask, there isn't any, but what came in at number two in the destructive dogs poll gave me a bit of a shock. It's the Chihuahua!

According to a new survey, the Great Dane causes the most destruction in its lifetime, on average causing £668 worth of damage, closely followed by the Chihuahua which racks up £638 in damage repairs.

Apparently, there was another surprise inclusion in the destructive dogs data is the Dachsund. Sausage dogs cause an average £444 of damage during their lives.

There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a gallery of smashed up iPhones when your network provider won't let you upgrade yet.

And yes, I am a bit bitter.

    • Tropical storm leaves 18 dead in Taiwan

Tropical Storm Kalmaegi, killed 18 people and injured another eight, while seven are still missing after it hit the island, an official from the National Fire Agency said on Sunday.

Kalmaegi, a Korean word meaning seagull, brought heavy rains, causing floods, landslides and agricultural losses of around T$500 million ($16 million) throughout the island.

Kalmaegi, the first typhoon to hit Taiwan this year, left Taiwan on Friday and was weakening over China after being downgraded to a tropical storm, an official from Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said.

    • National disaster, right under our noses.

Today I met a man ( around 60 yrs old) wearing a shirt that read Clean Coal on the front and Abundant, Cheap and Clean on the back. As I passed him I asked " Did Santa Clause bring you that shirt? " He replied "F#*kin' treehugger" I laughed as I walked away. How lucky was this man that I don't believe the marijuana B.S. either. • The end of the world?!?!?!?

Okay, this has me worried- critics of this experiment say that this machine has the potential to DESTROY THE PLANET.

      ...

"MEYRIN, Switzerland (June 29) - The most powerful atom-smasher ever built could make some bizarre discoveries, such as invisible matter or extra dimensions in space, after it is switched on in August.

But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth? Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?

Ridiculous, say scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by its French initials CERN - some of whom have been working for a generation on the $5.8 billion collider, or LHC.

'Obviously, the world will not end when the LHC switches on,' said project leader Lyn Evans.

David Francis, a physicist on the collider's huge ATLAS particle detector, smiled when asked whether he worried about black holes and hypothetical killer particles known as strangelets.

'If I thought that this was going to happen, I would be well away from here,' he said.

The collider basically consists of a ring of supercooled magnets 17 miles in circumference attached to huge barrel-shaped detectors. The ring, which straddles the French and Swiss border, is buried 330 feet underground.

The machine, which has been called the largest scientific experiment in history, isn't expected to begin test runs until August, and ramping up to full power could take months. But once it is working, it is expected to produce some startling findings.

Scientists plan to hunt for signs of the invisible 'dark matter' and 'dark energy' that make up more than 96 percent of the universe, and hope to glimpse the elusive Higgs boson, a so-far undiscovered particle thought to give matter its mass.

The collider could find evidence of extra dimensions, a boon for superstring theory, which holds that quarks, the particles that make up atoms, are infinitesimal vibrating strings.

The theory could resolve many of physics' unanswered questions, but requires about 10 dimensions - far more than the three spatial dimensions our senses experience."

      ...

Is anyone else not comfortable with being sucked into a black hole?

    • German whizzkid got it wrong: NASA

Earlier reports that a 13 year old German schoolboy spotted a miscalculation by NASA, proving the chances of an asteroid hitting the Earth were higher than initially believed, is in fact wrong.

The agency, sounding a bit like a weary math teacher, said its figures are correct when it comes to the asteroid Apophis, not the boy's.

"We stand by our numbers," NASA spokesman Dwayne Brown told AFP.

The agency that oversees space shuttle missions and unmanned space probes issued a statement after the German newspaper Potsdamer Neuerster Nachrichten reported on Tuesday that student Nico Marquardt had calculated there was a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth.

He argued in his project for a regional science competition that scientists at NASA had got it wrong when they estimated the chances of a collision at only 1 in 45,000.

But experts at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California had no doubts about their calculations, Brown said.

The Near-Earth Object Program Office "has not changed its current estimates for the very low probability (1 in 45,000) of an Earth impact by the asteroid Apophis in 2036," Brown said in a statement.

And the newspaper's account was also inaccurate when it described NASA telling the European Space Agency that the German student's calculations were correct, Brown said.

    • Navy Tests New Railgun...oh yes, a railgun.

They aren't for science fiction anymore.

"The U.S. Navy yesterday test fired an incredibly powerful new big gun designed to replace conventional weaponry aboard ships. Sci-fi fans will recognize its awesome power and futuristic technology.

The big gun uses electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants to fire a projectile farther and faster. The railgun, as it is called, will ultimately fire a projectile more than 230 miles (370 kilometers) with a muzzle velocity seven times the speed of sound (Mach 7) and a velocity of Mach 5 at impact."

This is some of the most lawless, crazy and scary race car driving I've ever seen. I'm watching some of these crashes and can't believe how much these guys are willing to endure!
