Rock stars create union to protect musican's rights
Radiohead, Robbie Williams and Iron Maiden are among bands who've teamed up to form a new organisation with the aim of changing the way major labels control musician's music.
More than 60 acts have joined the Featured Artists' Coalition, including Billy Bragg, Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, The Klaxons, DJ Paul Oakenfold, Craig David, Iron Maiden and the Kaiser Chiefs.
The coalition want artists to retain ownership of the copyright of their music which they then lease to their label. It also wants labels to explain to its musicians how, why and where their music is being used and to give more money to artists when it is. The move follows the rise in digital media and the belief from many musicians that they're being ignored as labels exploit the new medium. Pink Floyd keyboardist Wright dies, 65
LONDON, England (AP) -- Richard Wright, a founding member of the rock group Pink Floyd, died Monday. He was 65.
Pink Floyd's spokesman Doug Wright, who is not related to the artist, said Wright died after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. He says the band member's family did not want to give more details about his death.
Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason in college and joined their early band, Sigma 6. Along with the late Syd Barrett, the four formed Pink Floyd in 1965.
The group's jazz-infused rock and drug-laced multimedia "happenings" made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and their 1967 album, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn," was a hit.
In the early days of Pink Floyd, Wright, along with Barrett, was seen as the group's dominant musical force. The London-born musician and son of a biochemist wrote songs and sang.
The band released a series of commercially and critically successful albums including 1973's "Dark Side of the Moon," which has sold more than 40 million copies. Wright wrote "The Great Gig In The Sky" and "Us And Them" for that album, and later worked on the group's epic compositions such as "Atom Heart Mother," "Echoes" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Gilmour says no Pink Floyd reunion
LONDON - David Gilmour is sorry to disappoint, but there will be no Pink Floyd reunion. He’s having too much fun on his own.
The British rock icon raised fans’ hopes when the band performed at the Live 8 charity concert in London in 2005. It was the first time in almost a quarter of a century that Gilmour and estranged bandmate Roger Waters had appeared onstage together, and the atmosphere was electric.
But once was enough, Gilmour says.
The gig itself was “excellent, really enjoyable,” said the 62-year-old guitarist and singer.
“The rehearsals were less enjoyable. The rehearsals convinced me it wasn’t something I wanted to be doing a lot of,” Gilmour said, speaking from the Astoria, his houseboat-cum-recording studio on the River Thames.
He has a famously testy relationship with bassist and singer Waters, who walked away from Pink Floyd in 1985.

The guitar, called the 'Black Strat', will be available from September 22 and is based on the star's iconic instrument that helped create his band Pink Floyd's revolutionary sound.
David Gilmour said: "I told Fender that it was just an ordinary Strat that I bought, but I must say they’ve done a great job of recreating it."
The release of the guitar will coincide with the release of Gilmour's 3CD live album 'Live In Gdansk', recorded on his 2007 solo world tour. Fender are launching a signature model Stratocaster guitar. ... more -

"A giant inflatable pig that went missing from a Southern California music festival at the weekend has been found in tatters in a desert town.
