Whatchu know about my Apple TV update playa?
Get on your feet and get those hands in the air; Apple TV is in da HOUSE!
Though they postponed the availability of the free Apple TV update about two weeks ago, Apple finally and quietly released the highly anticipated new software today. The delay had led many in the industry to wonder whether Apple had run into some final development problems or whether they had decided to back off from a couple of unwanted (and unfair) features, such as the 24-hour window to watch a rental after a user presses the play button.
Some features are:
--Ability to access the iTunes store wirelessly for movie and music rentals straight from the box
--HD Dolby 5.1 capability
--A sleeker UI
--New direct access to Flickr and .Mac photostreams with automated updates to your library.
The box will be optimized for the HD rentals, which are $1.00 more than the regular new release features (though there is already some grumbling among the movie-loving masses that the data is compressed to a very low rate, resulting in only DVD-quality fidelity.)

Apple's least hyped product
Since the AppleTV came out in February, it has had an honored place as my music source for my house audio as well as a kickass photo screensaver. I have enjoyed the little enhancements that have come along in the past 6 months such as the YouTube function - animals doing stupid things *never* gets old.
But now I'm bored.... it still plays music just as well as it always did, and I've been getting to know Handbrake so I can watch some movies on the TV (really, I'm making that last piece up)... but come on Apple. Now you have an iPhone and iPod touch that are wifi enabled... wifi iTMS...can't you make this thing step up to the next level? Let me remote control it with my wife's iPhone, let me use it as a browser (for those occasions where communal web browsing makes sense) and let me rent/buy movies directly through it, There's more, but that will do for now Since the AppleTV came out in February, it has had an honored place as my music source for my house audio as well as a kickass photo s... more
