Welcoming the world at Notting Hill Carnival
"With London preparing to host the Olympics in 2012, this weekend's Notting Hill Carnival theme will be 'Welcoming the World'. Organisers say they expect 1.5 million people to enjoy the sound-systems, colourful parade and Caribbean food. Revellers will get through a ton of rice and peas, 12,000 mangoes and 25,000 bottles of rum.
Police at the carnival will use stop-and-search powers, metal detectors and dog handlers to create a "hostile environment" for criminals after a spate of knife crime, Scotland Yard said on Friday.
The Metropolitan Police's Deputy Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison said he was determined to stop weapons being used at Europe's biggest street festival. He has authorised the temporary use of wide-ranging powers to search people under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.
Security measures include: metal detector arches at tube stations, a network of security cameras, automatic number plate recognition technology to stop suspected criminals driving near the carnival, nearly 200 letters hand-delivered to suspected trouble-makers warning them to stay away."

Credit crunch to overshadow this years Notting Hill carnival
London's Notting Hill Carnival's festive mood, lavish costumes and hectic pre-event buzz could be missing from this years event.
The west London carnival, normally involves about 50,000 party goers wearing 150,000 feather plumes and 30 million sequins, is said to be smaller, quieter and much less flamboyant this year due to the lack of money in the capital.

LIFE ON THE ROAD WITH THE CARNIVAL... WITH A NORMAL GROUP OF FRIENDS WATCHING NOT ...
Imagine being in college, living a NORMAL lifestyle, trying to be successful anyway possible...
The first week I worked was full of drinking and working a ton of hours. I met a ton of characters. One of the firast "carnys" i met was a guy everyone called Smiley. He was already good friends with TImmy, Nicky, and Mike and fit in with our group of friends for the most part because he loves to drink. He has told us countless stories about his life that I could even imagine happening to me and neither could the average person. Little did I know he was the most "normal" person at the carnival. The amount of outrageous things that happen daily is countless. For example, the first carnival week I worked, a guy that did not work at the carnival, named Steve, walked around everyday dressed as a pirate. Apparently he walks around this town all year dressed like this and when the carnival comes thats where he will be. Wearing a different colored pirate outfit daily he would call himself different names such as "green pirate Steve" or when he wore mixed colors the last day he referred to himself as, "colorful pirate Steve." To top it off he would carry around some sort of smoking device such as a empty bottle of pitrone and use it as a smoking device. He was probably the creepiest person I have ever met in my life. Another outrageous event is when I was sitting around a grill with the Euro Bungy crew and a carny came up to us and asked us if we smoked and quickly passed his smoking device to one of our friends who was helping us for the week because Tim and Nicky were gone for the week. Our friend quickly replied, before even thinking of smoking it, "I mean no, I don't smoke that." The carny took his smoking device and said, "what you guys don't smoke?" and walked away quickly. It turned out to be what we thought it was, meth. Another example of how outrageous the carnival is, is all the fights that occur. One carny, named Chris, got into a fight with another carny named "Tex." It turns out Chris and his wife were drinking at a bar and Tex was there as well. Tex was gropping Chris's wife apparently and they almost got into it at the bar but then Chris went outside to cool off. Later that night, Chris wanted his drugs back and Tex claimed he never had them. With Chris already pissed off at Tex he immediately started swearing and a fist fight broke out. Chris ended up with a broken wrist and Tex ended up with a broken noise. The fights are endless. The Last example of how outrageous carny life can be is the last spot we were at. We were up partying, as we do a lot, with some of the carnys on the campgrounds. We walked back to our motor home or as we like to call it, the Taj Mahal, and went to bed. We thought we met some other "normal" carnys for once because these kids were our age and seemed to like to party, and plus, they had all their teeth. Shockingly, that was far from the truth.. Are buddy, Smiley, had told us to comeover and party over there because these people were pretty cool. It turns out after getting with two other ladies that night, Smiley decided at 8 am it would be necessary to go skinny dipping with one of the kids girlfriends who we thought was normal. The cops came and arrested her because she was only 19 and then saw her boyfriend, who we again thought was normal, passed out outside their tent. The cops picked him up and he was also under the age of 21, about 19. Apparently there were some warrents out for his arrest or something and he is in jail for two months and has reportly been saying that when he gets out he is going to hurt Smiley for what he did to him and trying to get with his woman.
The funny part about this is that us five are pretty normal and get to watch all the drama unfold and be apart of it as well. I wish I could write more because I have so much more to say. Carnival Ride Collapses, Injuring Dozens

This spinning carnival ride called a Yo-Yo collapsed at the Calaveras County Fair in California Friday night, injuring all 24 on board. Most of the riders were children.

An officer at the scene said that some of the chairs on the ride, hung by chains, slammed into each other and became entangled.

Holocaust float banned from Rio's Carnival parade
A Brazilian judge has banned a group from parading a float depicting the victims of the Holocaust and a Hitler figure. Responding to a lawsuit brought by the Jewish Federation of Rio de Janeiro (Fierj), the judge ruled that the float trivialized the Holocaust, and said "Carnival should not be used as an instrument of hatred, any kind of racism and clear trivialisation of barbaric and unjustified acts against minorities." The group is still allowed to parade, but must remove the mannequins meant to represent dead bodies and is not allowed to have a Hitler character on board.
This might seem like a strange idea for a float, but the theme for this year's parade is "It gives you goose bumps" and floats are set to portray cold, fear and birth. I would say this float does exactly that. Though Fierj argues that the Holocaust is too monstrous a situation to "be combined with the excessively festive nature of the carnival." A Brazilian judge has banned a float, intended for the Rio carnival, depicting the victims of the Holocaust and a Hitler figure.
The samba group can still parade, but they must remove the mannequins representing the dead bodies.
Not sure if i agree or not. I am all for the expression of ideas. I guess the concern seemed to be if it was offensive, respectful or something along those lines. Rio police officers quit just in time to party
Rio de Janeiro's police force has been left in the lurch just days before Carnival as several senior officers handed in their resignations after their commander was sacked. The state governor dismissed the military police head after he allowed a mass demonstration by officers over their pay.
