Film and Geotag Your Next Car Accident
Your faulty memory won't hold up in court next time some moron comes out of nowhere and hits you, but this will.
The guys who brought us the CarCam Voyager dash-mounted video camera have gone one better and added GPS logging so you not only record what happened, but where and when it happened. Just the thing for convincing your insurance agent you didn't cause the six-car pileup that totaled your Corvette ZR1.
Of course, the CarCam Voyager Pro can be used for more than covering your ass.
The Voyager Pro can record your entire road trip -- or as much of it as the 2-GB SD card will hold, anyway -- and track it all on Google Earth so you don't forget where you found that greasy spoon with the amazing chili or saw the world's largest ball of twine.
It'd be a sweet tool for doing recon on great motorcycling roads, but security is clearly the gadget's selling point. Built-in sensors detect sudden braking, acceleration or other movement and will begin recording 10 seconds before impact. (It stops recording 30 seconds after impact.) "You will never be left wondering 'What happened?' because it will all be caught on tape," the manufacturer claims. Plug the SD card into your computer and the video plays alongside a Google Earth map showing where it was recorded. It's also got a time and date stamp and a record of your speed.
With geotagging and time stamping, the video is probably admissable in court, so make sure you turn it off before making that 130-mph run down Alligator Alley. Your faulty memory won't hold up in court next time some moron comes out of nowhere and hits you, but this will. ... more -

Grandma heartbroken after toddler grandaughter shoots herself in Sam's Club Store
A 4-year-old girl shot herself in the chest Monday after snatching her grandmother's handgun from the woman's purse while riding in a shopping cart at a Sam's Club store, authorities said.
A witness, Lueen Homewood, said store workers grabbed first-aid materials off store shelves to help the grandmother as she cradled the wounded child near the store's pharmacy, The (Columbia) State newspaper reported on its Web site.
The girl was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and was recovering Monday afternoon after surgery, said police department spokesman Brick Lewis. Hospital officials would not release her condition after the operation.
Lewis said the grandmother, Donna Hutto Williamson, has a permit to carry a concealed weapon and the purse containing the small-caliber handgun was in the cart near the child. The 47-year-old Williamson, of Salley, was not immediately charged with a crime.
Williamson, a South Carolina magistrate, was distraught after the shooting, her mother-in-law said.
"The grandmother is just beating herself up," said Inease Williamson, 68. "She is just so upset. Everyone is upset."
Officials said the shooting, which was captured on store surveillance cameras, appeared to be accidental. Lewis said police would not release the video.
The store was closed while police investigated the shooting. It reopened Monday afternoon.
"Everyone at Sam's Club is deeply saddened by today's tragedy," Tara Stewart, state spokeswoman for Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the little girl and her family."
Concealed weapons permit holders in South Carolina are not allowed to carry weapons into buildings that prohibit it, or into government buildings, schools and daycare facilities, among other places.
The Sam's Club store does not have a sign prohibiting guns inside.

How this could have been prevented? Why did the grandmother leave the gun near the child in the first place? This is truly a tragic accident, I cannot imagine the grief at this time. The boat was competing in the 40th annual Regata de Amigos. The race, which covers 610 nautical miles from Galveston to Veracruz, Mexico, started Friday and continues into next week.

Crane Inspector Arrested For Taking Bribes, Responsible For Crane Accident
BY ADAM LISBERG
DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU CHIEF
Updated Friday, June 6th 2008, 4:45 PM
The city's top crane inspector was charged Friday with taking thousands of dollars in bribes from a company in exchange for approving fake crane inspections and slipping the company copies of the qualifying exam for operators.
James Delayo was arrested a week after the top of a crane snapped off and crashed onto E. 91st St., killing two workers and prompting outrage at the city's rash of deadly construction accidents.
The city Department of Investigation said there was no evidence that Delayo's alleged corruption affected that collapse or the March crane collapse on E. 51st St. that killed seven people.
Delayo, 60, a 26-year employee of the Buildings Department who lives in the Bronx, was serving as acting chief of the Cranes and Derricks Unit. He turned himself into authorities this morning and was awaiting arraignment this evening.
He was the second crane inspector to be charged with a felony this year. Buildings inspector Edward Marquette was arrested after the March 15 crane collapse, charged with ignoring a complaint about the crane's safety that he was supposed to check out.
"There is much work to be done with the Cranes and Derricks Unit, and we are in the midst of a full operational overhaul," Acting Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri said. "Our number one priority is to ensure the department's staff conduct their jobs with the utmost integrity."
Delayo is accused of taking money from an unnamed crane and equipment company for the past eight years "for falsely reporting that the company's mobile cranes had been inspected and that its crane operators had taken and passed required practical examinations, when in fact no such inspections or practical examinations were conducted," the Department of Investigation said.
He allegedly also gave a crane company the questions and answers for a hoisting machine operator exam. He earns $74,224 a year but is expected to be suspended soon.
"DOB has made enormous strides in rooting out corruption over the past six years, but this case underscores that there remains more work to do," Mayor Bloomberg said. "We are fully committed to eliminating all traces of the corrupt culture that long infiltrated the construction process."
Bloomberg stood with city, industry and union leaders two days ago to announce a tough package of reforms to make city construction safer.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, who was not part of that push, said Friday that Delayo's arrest shows the Buildings Department needs a stronger shakeup.
"Before we begin any new procedures to implement the administration's construction reforms, we must have a top-to-bottom review of the Buildings Department, its procedures and its personnel," Stringer said.
