Wall Street Journal dismisses McCain
When you graduate 894th out of a class of 899, eventually it will show up.
He told us he didn’t know much about the economy… now he’s proving it.
So much so that the Wall Street Journal, perhaps America’s leading financial publication, is blasting McCain over what its editorial board sees as inaccurate and, “unpresidential” comments about the crisis in America’s financial system.
If you’re a Republican running for president of the United States and the Wall Street Journal basically says you’re an incompetent buffoon, you’re in serious trouble. When you graduate 894th out of a class of 899, eventually it will show up. ... more -
Wall Street Journal editorial board skewers McCain
"In a crisis, voters want steady, calm leadership, not easy, misleading answers that will do nothing to help. Mr. McCain is sounding like a candidate searching for a political foil rather than a genuine solution," "In a crisis, voters want steady, calm leadership, not easy, misleading answers that will do nothing to help. Wall Street Journal Makes Sarah Palin Older
Saturday’s Journal, in the Corrections & Amplifications Column:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is 44 years old. An article on the governor in the Fall 2008 edition of WSJ. magazine that was included with some copies of the Sept. 6 Journal incorrectly said she is 45.

Remember when the WSJ was a real newspaper?
The Republican far right would have you believe there is a growing riff in the Democratic party caused by disenfranchised Hillary supporters. They figure than can manipulate the simple female minds of misguided feministas to their advantage. Good luck with getting women to vote away control over their own bodies. George Bush is Batman
from columnist Andrew Klavan in the Wall St. Journal:
"There seems to me no question that the Batman film "The Dark Knight," currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war. Like W, Batman is vilified and despised for confronting terrorists in the only terms they understand. Like W, Batman sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with an emergency, certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past." from columnist Andrew Klavan in the Wall St. Journal: ... more -
When Designs Go Bad: Spectacular Product Flops
Sometimes the children of technology end-up totally unpopular, unwanted, and a waste.
"Companies from Apple Inc. to General Motors Corp. know from experience that consumers will occasionally reject their wares, even after the company has spent millions on marketing, research and development.
But by remembering some of the most spectacular flops of recent decades, the next generation of designers has a better chance of succeeding where their predecessors failed.
The Wall Street Journal talked to leading design firms and business professors to find product flops that made an impression -- and to determine what lessons companies should draw from them before taking this year's products to market." Sometimes the children of technology end-up totally unpopular, unwanted, and a waste. ... more -
Americans' charitable giving hits a record
Americans gave a record amount to charity in 2007, topping $300 billion for the first time, despite mounting economic worries.
Still, there are indications that slowing growth is taking a toll on giving. The 3.9% increase in donations last year was far less than spikes of roughly 10% and 13% in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In addition, researchers revised 2006's giving increase downward to a meager 0.4% from 4.2%.

"The worst case of cognitive dissonance in the history of modern politics...
This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. You either understand who she is, or not. And if you don't, after 16 years of watching Clintonian dramas, you probably never will.
It's fair to say of the establishment media at this point that it is well populated by people who feel such a lack of faith in Mrs. Clinton's words and ways that it amounts to an aversion. They are offended by how she and her staff operate. They try hard to be fair. They constantly have to police themselves.
Mrs. Clinton's disapproval numbers have risen to the highest level ever in the campaign, her highest in fact in seven years.
She is concussed. But she is a scrapper, a fighter, and she's doing what she knows how to do: scrap and fight. Only harder. So that she ups the ante every day. This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand... more -
Japan's youth not that into cars
Bad news for automakers, good news for, um, the rest of the world?
"Nissan designers interviewed 16-to-20 years olds" and found "that many youths world-wide felt cars were unnecessary and even uncool because they pollute and cause congestion."

Rupert Murdoch Picks Liberal Son as Successor
"James Murdoch, 34, who buys into global warming hysteria, has in recent days been labeled the "News Corporation Heir" and "Son King" because of changes in the company that have dramatically increased his power. The Fox News Channel is one part of Murdoch's News Corporation. "
nooooo! this could be a catastrophic blow to the courageous movement to restore fairness and balancedness to our traditionally nauseatingly biased, near-communist media!!! Inside word has it that James is considering none other than Al Gore III as his right-hand man! He may even fire Sean Hannity! Can't the FCC stop this??? Why oil at $100 a barrel might be okay
From the WSJ, a relatively lucid run-down of why higher oil prices might not be SUCH a big deal. This rings true to me, if only because expensive oil has become such a bogeyman -- such an irrational specter of impending economic DOOM.

As part of the Last Lecture series (now known as the 'Journeys' series of lectures), professors are asked to speak on any subject they hold important, were they to give the very last lecture of their lives.
But when Professor Randy Pausch speaks on living life to the fullest, and on the importance of tenacity, he speaks from the heart: he is dying of terminal pancreatic cancer.
