    • Why Shia LaBeouf can't get laid

NOTE: You have to click on the link above to video on why LaBeouf can't get laid.. read story first. Its amusing

Details magazine is a true lady’s mag. What other zine can make Harry Potter look yummy? While Maxim sticks to a predictable T&A formula for their cover, Details throws us chicks a bone by featuring a roster of male hotties. Even the ads feature men who look like dream boat contestants from the game Mystery Date. The fun does not stop there. The articles offer a bird’s eye view into the world of the modern fashionable man.

      The Cover:
It seemed like only yesterday when Shia LaBeouf was on Disney’s Even Stevens. Now this sweet baby is rocking Hollywood. Unfortunately the cover exclaims he just can’t get laid. Maybe this video is the reason why.

      The Hot:
Think your relationship is dysfunctional? The article, “What if Your Wife Were A Porn Star?” is a fascinating read about the lives of men whose spouses work in the triple X field. At least most of our soul mates can tell their co-workers what we do for a living. I discovered I have one thing in common with my favorite author, Augusten Burroughs, who developed an infatuation on author, Brian Greene, after reading the “Elegant Universe”, in his story “I got a Crush On You”. I fell temporary head over heels over Augusten after reading “Running with Scissors”. Is there a man in your life sadly lacking in the style department? Point him towards page 164 so they can master the basics of “How to pull off American Style”. And I wish my favorite lady mag would do a story on “The Obscure Cocktail” page 144.

      The Not:
So, 22 year old Art World Power Broker Vito Schnabel became a big-time gallery owner without his pop’s help? I think not. And I don’t buy “The Stigma of The Never Married Man”. Darn smug marrieds! Lastly, the history of “The Lesbian Kiss”, would have been more interesting in 2003.

      The Verdict:
Details is chuck full of fun tidbits that will pepper any party conversation, like the hooker heels that come with a tip jar and the fun new expression, Bluetool. Next to Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Page Six Magazine, Details is a fashion enthusiasts must read whether you have one or two X chromosomes.

    • Elle Dusts Off Jessica Simpson!

Forget about all the sniping we have been hearing about at Elle Magazine. Creative Director, Joe Zee, and soon to be ex Editor at Large, Nina Garcia both win gold medals for their fashion savvy. To steal a catch “word” from Bravo’s Rachel Zoe, the majority of the fashion world would “DIE” to be in one their couture pinching shoes. Zee and Garcia set the tone for the fall fashion issue, and it is still tres fabulous.

Here is how the September issue, Elle’s largest book to date, weighs in:

      The Cover
Jessica Simpson is America’s sweetheart. She is someone you can knock back a brewsky with on Rodeo Drive. But we don’t get the plaid shirt, albeit cashmere on the cover of America’s leading fashion zine. The accessories also left us wanting. Sorry Elle, there should be another star on the cover along with Jessica and her name is FASHION.

      The Hot
The fashion trend pages are bulletin board worthy especially Wicked Ways (pg 272) and if you are mad for plaid you will LOVE Queen’s Country (pg 284). The Super Heroine story titled Supersize Me (pg 482) is good for a giggle and includes a tip on where to find eligible men. It was fun to find out that ex-Madonna hottie, Cameron, from the Express Yourself Video has become, a lifestyle-inspiring yogi. And Joe Zee’s Ugly Betty makeover using the season’s hottest trends was totally spot on.

      The Not
A spread and story with the stars of High School Musical. Call me Grand Ma Style Bee, but I just don’t get it. And despite the fact we love all the merch and the fashion spreads are divine, it would be nice to see more affordable alternatives under $100.

      The verdict
Elle is still one of our all time favorite magazines. PS: Stay tuned for Stylista, airing this Fall staring Elle’s new fashion director, Anne Slowey and Creative Director Joe Zee. Stylista has the fixings to become a major addiction. The show is a self-professed, Devil Wears Prada meets Survivors Dramedy. Sounds totally yummy. • Mama Vogue vs. Teen Vogue

worship Condé Nast, the publisher that delivers about a dozen fashionable magazines including the two Vogues to my mailbox every four weeks. August can feel almost like Christmas to a fashionista when the two coveted September issues arrive. Today we pit old school Mama Vogue against new school Teen Vogue. Don’t you just love a family feud?

Cover Wars: This is a head scratcher. Both covers kinda stink. Keira Knightley who we love, love, love, suffers from hat hair. Surprisingly, she looks prettier on the DVD cover for Domino. And poor High School Musical starlet Vanessa Hudgens appears to be channeling her inner frumpy Betty with a matronly ‘do and Golden Girls-inspired dress. We declare a draw.

The HOT: We buy Mama Vogue for the fantasy, no matter how dark the fantasy may be. The September issue is chock full of wonderful darkness including clothing by Alexander McQueen, black lip gloss, and a review of an outrageous cosmetic procedure we would never dare try (electrocute your flabby waist away!). We are drawn to Teen Vogue for opposite reasons. We can always depend on it for being a light fluffy confection where we can view items we can almost afford. We also adore Teen Vogue’s updates on cool bands like the Gossip and we love their cheerful fashion spreads like this month’s Cowboys and Indians pictorial. Plus their ads are always great for a good chuckle. Where else can you see a Walmart spread just two pages away from a Dior ad? LOVE.

The NOT: September’s Mama Vogue is labeled the “Value-Conscious Chic: When To Spend and Where to Save” issue. Um, Anna, stop it already. You irritated us enough with the fur. Don’t pretend you have any interest in budget fashion. On the flip side, Teen Vogue’s “Style Blogger” story on teen fashion phenom Kira Plastinina makes me feel like a loser. Thanks, Pops, for never buying me my own empire! But seriously, it raises the question: does being dirty rotten rich qualify someone to be a role model à la Paris Hilton?

And The Winner Is: If you mashed both magazines together, you would have the perfect ‘zine. Otherwise I recommend reading Mama Vogue for the main course and finishing off with a light perusal of the sweet Teen Vogue to take the edge off. Now I am jonesing for Spring 2009.

    • Zero Gravity: The Lighter Side of Science

American Physical Society Sites: The Physics of High Heels.
Polish off your math skills everybody. Formula method @the link

      -
"England, the country that nurtured the genius of Isaac Newton, has now applied the brains of its physicists to a modern conundrum: What is the height of the heels that Sex in the City's Carrie Bradshaw could wear without falling over or cramping up in pain?

The answer, as calculated by Professor Paul Stevenson of the University of Surrey, is as complicated as contemporary dating. If Bradshaw, the show's fashion mad lead character, is wearing shoes she really likes, cost a lot, and are the latest thing, she can sashay about easily in a pair of her beloved Manolo Blahnik stilettos that top out at over five inches or almost 13 centimeters tall. If she has spent the night toasting the end of the television series, then she had better think about not wearing shoes with heels higher than about an inch because the alcohol will upset her equilibrium.

What the quantification does not address is how much pressure a woman stumbling about in high heels would exert if she stepped on you. For that the British physics institute directs people to its web site where it records that a 100 pound woman in stilettos will exert pressure under her foot that is 20 times that of a 6,000 pound elephant.

    • Style Update: Stay Warm in Super Chunky Knits

Knitwear, so long encompassing cashmere sweaters and woolly vests, has undergone an urban revolution. With yarns getting chunkier and used every which way from shoulder shrug to sweater dress, new knits - by Missoni, Pucci, Burberry, Giles Deacon and Prada, among others - are no longer for weekend only.

As autumn leaves fall into a golden carpet on the ground, winter wardrobes thicken up. This is the season across Europe and North America where thoughts turn to clothes in the comfort zone, especially knits as armor against the morning chill, before the full winter coat comes out of its dry-cleaning bag.

This is nothing new - in the 70s, chunky knits were worn as blazers and stoles, and sweater dresses were all the rage. The trend was further updated in the 80s with boxy shoulder pads and leather waist belts.

      Love me some chunky knits.

    • So many to choose from

I am in the position of making my fall handbag purchase. You know the one. You wait and wait until all the good new stuff is out, and then you decide where to spend your hard-earned cash.

This one just showed up on one of the blogs I frequent. Man, oh, man. This will be hard to beat. Brown, glazed snakeskin.
