Loud bar music makes people drink more, faster
Blame the DJ: loud bar music makes people drink more and drink faster, a study released Friday has found.
"Previous research had shown that fast music can cause fast drinking, and that music versus no music can cause a person to spend more time in a bar," said Nicolas Gueguen, a professor of behavioral sciences at the Universite de Bretagne-Sud in France, and corresponding author for the study.
"This is the first time that an experimental approach in a real context found the effects of loud music on alcohol consumption."
Gueguen and his colleagues discretely visited two bars over the course of three Saturday nights whose owners agreed to let them manipulate the sound levels.
They randomly selected 40 males aged 18 to 25 who ordered a glass of draft beer and monitored their consumption at different sound levels.
The authors offered two hypotheses for why louder music would lead to increased drinking within a decreased amount of time.
"One, in agreement with previous research on music, food and drink, high sound levels may have caused higher arousal, which led the subjects to drink faster and to order more drinks," Gueguen said.
"Two, loud music may have had a negative effect on social interaction in the bar, so that patrons drank more because they talked less."
The study will be published in the October issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

The Art Pack ~ Pain O Chokolat /block party!/
Attention. Il parait qu’ils remettent ça l’année prochaine…

Ibiza Drug Clampdown
This year 3 of Ibiza's main clubs (Amnesia, Bora Bora and DC-10) were closed down in the opening month of the club season in a bid by authorities to force them to tackle drug-dealing and consumption among clubbers. How effective has this been and how important is drug taking to the Ibiza clubbing experience? Will a serious clampdown effect tourism? How difficult is it for the police to deal with the drug situation and are they understaffed to tackle it? One GIANT Party!
So, I'm cautiously optimistic about this year's presidential elections. Obama is such an inspiring, transformative candidate, and if he's elected in November, I'm predicting some WILD parties. Can you imagine?? The whole city of New York having a giant bash! I can see it become the celebration of a lifetime.

Britain's oldest man reaches 112
Britain's oldest man, thought to be one of three surviving UK World War I veterans, has celebrated his 112th birthday with a VIP lunch and fly-past. Henry Allingham is also the last surviving original member of the Royal Air Force - formed 90 years ago.
A Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, involving a Lancaster bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane, honoured the occasion. The party for Mr Allingham, from Ovingdean, near Brighton, was being held at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. A planned jump by the Royal Air Force Falcons Parachute Display Team had to be cancelled because of low cloud, but the team delivered a birthday card, signed by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy, by Chinook helicopter.
Following the fly-past, a two-seater single-engine Tutor aircraft performed an acrobatic display above Cranwell college's main building for the assembled guests, including his great-great-grandchildren Erik Carlson, two, and four-month-old Lila Rose Gray.
Air Vice Marshal Peter Dye (retired) and Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns attended the event.
Mr Allingham was also presented with a birthday card and cake by children from Cranwell Primary School. Britain's oldest man, thought to be one of three surviving UK World War I veterans, has celebrated his 112th birthday with a VIP lunch... more -

Tech billionaire gone wild
Broadcom's co-founder was a drug fiend who trafficked in cocaine, ecstasy, and methamphetamine, spiked the drinks of business associates and employees, hired prostitutes for himself and others, and maintained several narcotics dens, including one in an underground lair at his Los Angeles mansion, prosecutors charge.
Henry T. Nicholas III is portrayed as an out-of-control wild man who scored drug caches for Super Bowl parties and rock festivals and had his dealer invoice him for these illicit purchases.
The 48-year-old Nicholas, who was charged with securities fraud in a separate U.S. District Court case, allegedly "used threats of physical violence and death and payments of money to attempt to conceal his unlawful conduct," according to the indictment. Prosecutors allege that, in June 2002, Nicholas and Broadcom entered into a $1 million settlement agreement with an employee who was aware of the executive's "unlawful narcotics activity." The hefty payout, which Broadcom covered, contractually prevented the employee from speaking about Nicholas's drug abuse.
The billionaire apparently did little to conceal his drug transactions. On one occasion, in the lobby of Broadcom's southern California headquarters, he directed an employee to provide cash to a courier "in exchange for an envelope containing controlled substances." On a drug-fueled 2001 private plane flight--during which Nicholas allegedly used and distributed narcotics--the pilot was forced to don an oxygen mask due to the "marijuana smoke and fumes." According to a March 2008 Forbes story, Nicholas, with an estimated net worth of $1.8 billion, is ranked 677 on the list of the world's wealthiest individuals. Broadcom's co-founder was a drug fiend who trafficked in cocaine, ecstasy, and methamphetamine, spiked the drinks of business associat... more -
Thousands of revellers close Liverpool Street tube station
So Saturday 31st May was the last day you could drink alcohol on public transport in London. Thousands of people attended a party advertised on Facebook to catch the 20.30 BST departure from Liverpool St tube station on the westbound platform and party - bringing their own booze totally legally until the ban became active at midnight.
Peter Moore, 35, a sailor from Brighton, described his night as: "Drunken, I just downed a can of beer in 10 seconds. It's sweaty on there but I'm going round and round until I vomit."
Apparently Baker Street and Liverpool Street stations became the revelling hotspots for the party on the Circle line. So Saturday 31st May was the last day you could drink alcohol on public transport in London. Thousands of people attended a party adv... more -
