Parody on Carbon Offsetting
http://cheatneutral.com/ is a clever satirical project intended to challenge the ridiculousness of carbon offsetting by creating an equally ridiculous opportunity to offset your infidelity.
So what is Cheat Offsetting?
When you cheat on your partner you add to the heartbreak, pain and jealousy in the atmosphere.
Cheatneutral offsets your cheating by funding someone else to be faithful and NOT cheat. This neutralises the pain and unhappy emotion and leaves you with a clear conscience.
(Carbon offsetting does the same thing. The Carbon offset industry sold £60 million of offsets last year, and is rapidly growing.) http://cheatneutral.com/ is a clever satirical project intended to challenge the ridiculousness of carbon offsetting by creating an eq... more -
Do carbon offsets live up to their promise?
In theory, the idea is simple. The consumer pays a third party to remove a quantity of carbon (in the form of a greenhouse gas) equal to what he or she emits. But how voluntary carbon offsets actually work is unclear at best, and potentially fraudulent at worst, say experts.
The problem: No current certification or monitoring system has any teeth, and there is no easy way to confirm that offsetting companies are doing what they promise. Now, various organizations are scrambling to provide standards for what experts call a fragmented market with a product of drastically varying quality. In theory, the idea is simple. The consumer pays a third party to remove a quantity of carbon (in the form of a greenhouse gas) equal ... more -

New Zealand Aims to be Worlds First Carbon Neutral Nation
New Zealand has declared its aim to be carbon neutral in electrical energy by 2025, in stationary manufacturing energy in 2030 and in transport energy by 2040.
The New Zealand government has a history of leadership in sustainable energy planning already signaled its intention to be a leader in carbon neutrality when it announced its Emissions Trading Scheme in September. The October launch of the New Zealand Energy Strategy to 2050, titled Powering our Future: Towards a sustainable low emissions energy system, has provided further detail of the steps.
The strategy includes plans for substantial reductions in emissions, along with carbon offsetting projects such as increasing national forest area by 250,000 hectares by 2020. By 2025, the goal is to obtain 90 percent of all electricity from renewable sources. Is this achievable? We think so: Provision of renewable electricity is cheaper in New Zealand compared to other countries due to abundant renewable energy resources. Around 70 percent of New Zealand energy production is already from renewable sources, and a number of large scale wind farm proposals have recently been approved.

We offer to carbon-offset Al Gore's environmentally unsound diet ;-)
In a tongue-in-cheek move the animal-lovers over at PETA are asking you to go vegetarian to offset Al Gore's environmentally unfriendly diet. They say that though the former vice president has done a lot to raise global warming awareness, his meat eating habits speak louder than words when it comes to follow through and action, since meat production is one of the leading sources of climate changing pollution.
PETA has created a special page where you can pledge to go vegetarian to compensate for Gore's meat munching ways. The animal rights organization have also posted a few inconvenient truths of their own for the former Vice President to peruse:
A major United Nations study determined that the meat industry generates 40 percent more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, SUVs, ships, and planes in the world combined.
Researchers at the University of Chicago concluded that going vegan is 50 percent more effective in combating the climate crisis than switching to a hybrid car.
The official handbook of the Live Earth concerts that Gore helped organize acknowledges that not eating meat is the single most effective thing you can do to reduce your climate change impact.
While we’re aware of the toll meat production takes on the planet, we understand the superhuman eco-warrior needs to keep his strength up, and appreciate he has a lot of official dinners he needs to attend. Since he therefore might find it harder than the average person to go vegetarian overnight, the Daily Mantra is offering to purchase credits to carbon offset Gore's diet for a year if the earth-saving superstar promises to stick to a heart and earth friendlier diet of vegetables, white meat and fish from now on. How about it Mr. Gore?

The great carbon con: can offsetting really help save the planet?
An important conversation to have. My opinion is that we need to learn how to conserve our resources and be as efficient as possible. Carbon offset schemes will help to divert some money into renewable resources. As long as we are flying a gazillion miles per day, driving trucks with 8 mpg fuel efficiency, and eating meat most of all, we will still fry ourselves right off the planet. Carbon Neutral
Around the world, companies and individuals are getting involved in carbon offsetting projects. Carbon offsetting schemes are designed to invest in renewable energy to offset greenhouse gas emissions. In Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority is one of the agencies that has taken advantage of the carbon market through reforestation projects in national parks. Critics say the projects have forced people off their land, while the UWA says the eviction process was part of an effort to secure the national park prior to the offsetting project.
