    • Volkswagen to open US plant

Twenty years after the closure of its last American plant, Volkswagen is returning to the United States. With its planned factory in Chattanooga, the company is hoping to regain US market share and also buffer itself from euro-dollar currency fluctuations.

German carmaker Volkswagen announced on Tuesday it would invest close to €1 billion ($1.59 billion) to build its first factory in the United States after the closure of its last plant 20 years ago. The company said it expects to open a new plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee by 2011. VW plans to produce 150,000 automobiles annually at the site as part of its effort to increase market share in America, which has eroded in recent years.

    • Volkswagen's First US Assembly Plant Will Be In Chattanooga, Tennessee

VW to build plant in Chattanooga
      By: Mike Pare

Volkswagen AG will build its first United States assembly plant in Chattanooga, officials said today.

Europe’s biggest automaker said it will put a nearly $1 billion investment in Chattanooga’s Enterprise South Industrial Park.

The plant is expected to create 2,000 jobs. It is expected to open in 2011.

“The U.S. market is an important part of our volume strategy, and we are now very resolutely accessing that market,” said Martin Winterkorn, chief executive of Volkswagen.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen said he is “enormously pleased” by the announcement.

Mr. Bredesen and other officials including Volkswagen of America’s chief executive, were slated to be at Hunter Museum of American Art at 11:30 a.m. for an announcement.

“I believe Volkswagen chose Tennessee because of our shared values, our commitment to innovation and our strong respect for the environment,” he said.

Matt Kisber, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, said he could not be more pleased in the partnership between the state, VW and Chattanooga and Hamilton County government.

Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey said he has worked with four different city mayors and other officials with a vision of transforming the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant site.

Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield said VW and Chattanooga have a lot in common.

“Both are serious about environmental sustainability and 21st century manufacturing,” he said.

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said the community has maintained its focus

Officials at the Wolfsburg-based company said the surging euro has pushed plans for a production facility forward. The 15-nation currency has hit record highs recently against the U.S. dollar, making goods exported from Germany more expensive in the United States.

Volkswagen recently moved its North American headquarters from suburban Detroit to Herndon, Va., outside Washington, to bring it closer to its East Coast customer base.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, who landed in Chattanooga early today, said he is “enormously pleased” with the facility coming to Southeast Tennessee.

Erich Merkle, vice president of forecasting auto industry forecaster IRN Inc., said suppliers will build facilities to support the assembly plant.

Chattanooga beat out bids by Alabama and Michigan for the plant.

The announcement came Tuesday from Lower Saxony Minister President Christian Wulff, who sits on the supervisory board of Europe's largest automaker.

    • Johnny Cash: American V: A Hundred Highways

Rick Rubin, Producer of American V speaks about the songs and the mood behind making this great album which was released posthumously in 2006. News is that there will be an American VI released sometime this year. For me this album was Johnny Cash's way of saying farewell and preparing himself to meet his soulmate, June Carter. The songs are poignant and the album has a sad tone, but it is nevertheless beautiful and one of the best albums he ever made. The first song, Help Me, gets me everytime. He is more than a legend to me, he is a man who sang his soul and who touched mine. I will love him always and hope people who watch this are inspired to listen to more of his music. • Water War Between Georgia And Tennessee?

The borderline between Northern Georgia and Southern Tennessee that separates the Tennessee River is under dispute due to Georgia claiming the borderline originally was meant to be higher, thus giving Georgia rights to the Tennessee River as well. Legislators in Georgia hope to remedy that to allow thousands of gallons of the Tennessee River to flow to drought stricken Georgia. However, the Tennessee legislature and some Tennesseans are determined to not allow it to happen, even to the point of some residents claiming they will buy guns and shoot their rifles off if any encroachment occurs. Are we seeing the making of a water war in the Southwest due to the drought? And in perspective, is it really so hard to come to some sort of understanding between states to provide water for residents of this country who are suffering from a drought? Should the border be moved, or does the human right to water supercede boundaries? What do you think? • Tornadoes ravage Tennessee college

Union University in Jackson, Tennessee was completely devastated by last night’s killer tornadoes.

According to reports and from talking with people on the ground, UU is devastated. Over 50 students were injured, 8 with serious injuries, while 12 other students were trapped in the debris for hours. None of the injuries appear life-threatening, and there has been no loss of life. The men’s and women’s dormitories have all been destroyed, and it is already estimated that the damage is around $70 million.

Officials praised the preparedness and reaction by students, and emphasized that their actions avoided any further injuries. When the sirens activated, the president said, the plans went in place and probably saved lives.

“They gave us plenty of warning,” said Jacob Carr, an 18-year-old freshman from Union City. “Union did an amazing job.”

Students who rode out the storm in their dorm buildings told stories of rushing wind, stout pressure variations and an eerie silence after the storm passed.

    • Chattahippie Music Festival

Chattahippie is an outdoor event, located on a 50+ acre riverside venue. Consequently, sunscreen, rain ponchos and lawn chairs are recommended. Blankets and ground-seats are OK, too. Feel free to make yourself comfortable, just try not to annoy your fellow hippies.

The event will be held rain-or-shine. If it does happen to rain, no worries - we will all just smell a tad bit nicer than if it doesn?t.

For the safety of everyone, no pets or coolers are allowed on the festival grounds. Or firearms. Or fireworks. Or other things that you know shouldn?t be brought into large public gatherings.

To keep your thirst in control, you are allowed to bring two unopened, 16oz (max size) plastic water bottles into the festival grounds. We?ll have plenty of other water, soft drinks and beer available at reasonable prices. And great good, too!

      Camping

There will be limited number of tent camping permits made available for on-site space on the Chattahippie festival grounds. Watch our website for further details, but priority will be given to 4-day ticket holders, followed by 3-day ticket holders.

To request an on-site camping reservation:

      * Purchase your 4 or 3-day tickets on www.chattahippie.com
      * When checking out, allow for us to communicate with you through your email address
      * Watch your email for an invitation, and follow the instructions. You will need to know the exact size of your party, including attendee names, before requesting a permit.
      * All listed campers must purchase a multi-day festival ticket.

Additional camping space is available just across the bay at the Chester Frost State Park. We highly recommend that you consider camping on their grounds, as they have more space and better accommodations for RV and tent camping. However, space is allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis; reservations are not allowed. We recommend that you arrive early to guarantee a spot.

      Clean Beds & Hot Showers

Not into camping? We don?t blame you - sometimes a shower and a clean bed can really hit the spot.

The festival grounds are located less than 20 minutes from the Chattanooga airport, and a quick & easy drive to practically every hotel in the area. We?ll post a list of the closest lodgings soon, but feel free to look around - there are many great places to stay.

      Children

Chattahippie is a family-friendly event, and kids are welcome.

Children age 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a ticket-holding parent or legal guardian. Children must remain under your control & care at all times; unattended youngsters, and their parents, may be asked to leave the festival grounds without refund.

Please be safe, be smart and be responsible - watch your children closely, and enjoy a great festival.

      Parking
Reduce traffic and save our natural resources, and your money, by carpooling the earth-friendly way. Vehicles with 4+ occupants, motorcycles and human-powered vehicles are admitted free; all other vehicles will be charged a $10 parking fee at the gate.

    • Johnny Cash: "Hurt"

As this year ends I cannot help but think of those whose words and music influenced and filled my days. Johnny Cash is one of those people. I grew to love his music in the early seventies because my dad loved him. His music was not just considered "country", but music that appealed to those of us who knew what hard times were all about and those of us who rebelled against authority. He was a missive for the forgotten ones. He was indeed, "The Man In Black" and I treasured every moment I spent with my dad listening to his songs, that I now listen to with my own son. So in thinking about him and still to this day listening to his music that spanned generations and genres I am reminded of what he also suffered in his own life that made him stronger and the love he found with June Carter that led him to the words he sang that inspired me, and I miss him. As this year ends I cannot help but think of those whose words and music influenced and filled my days. Johnny Cash is one of those pe... more
