    • Anti-terrorist centers are bored with "insufficent" terrorist activity

Anti-terrorist or "fusion" centers are collaborative law enforcement and intelligence organizations that were established all over the country after 9/11 to share intelligence and counterterrorism information. But in the absence of a widespread domestic terrorist threat, they have not consistently demonstrated their value, according to a recent study.

“There is, more often than not, insufficient purely ‘terrorist’ activity to support a multi-jurisdictional and multi-governmental level fusion center that exclusively processes terrorist activity,” Lt. Nenneman wrote.

As a result, “Fusion centers must consider analyzing or processing other criminal activity, in addition to terrorist activity, in order to maintain the skills and interest of the analysts, as well as the participation and data collection of the emergency responder community.”

Basic questions regarding who the fusion centers are supposed to serve and exactly what they are supposed to produce often lack satisfactory answers, Lt. Nenneman

    • Guantanamo Bay torture "inspired by 24's Jack Bauer"

In this amazing article, published this weekend, a military lawyer from the infamous detention centre reveals that TV drama 24 formed the basis of new and controversial interrogation techniques for use on suspected terrorists.

The new torture methods (detailed in full the article) included 'water-boarding' and stress positions such as standing for a maximum of four hours and were signed off by Donald Rumsfield who added a comment at the bottom of the official document: "I stand for eight to 10 hours a day. Why is standing limited to four hours?"

The new techniques raised concern amongst some of those who witnessed them. FBI agents went on record with their concerns, as did various psychologists and investigators who reviewed the site.

The Supreme Court later overturned President Bush's Geneva decision (that none of the detainees at Guantanamo, whether Taliban of al-Qaida, could rely on the protections granted by the Geneva conventions), ruling that it was unlawful. By that time, however, a number of new, disputed interrogation techniques, inspired by a fictional counter-terrorism agent, had already been used on a number of detainees.

Ironically, last year the US military criticised the award-winning series, saying it encouraged soldiers to see torture as a justifiable weapon against terror suspects.

    • "Quick doc, we've got ourselves a Hasselhoff!"

What do David Hasselhoff, Jack Bauer and internet terminology all have in common, apart from each being cool in their own special way? All three have made their way into popular slang used by British doctors on the job to describe specific kinds of patients or diseases, in particular when professional discretion is needed but there's fun to be had.

Doctors have always used a tribal vocabulary to communicate between themselves, but now their secret lingo has been enriched by the electronic media and urban slang. A Hasselhoff describes a patient who turns up in casualty "with an injury with a bizarre explanation" inspired by a freak injury the former Knight Rider star suffered at London's Sanderson hotel last year when he hit his head on a glass shelf while shaving and cut his arm.

      Other slang includes:

404 moment: The point in a doctor's ward round when medical records can't be located, coming from internet error message, "404 - document not found.''

Jack Bauer: A doctor who is "still up and working after 24 hours on the job."

Waterboarding is FUN...if you're aquaman. otherwise, it's sick and not a reputable way of receiving information. Hell I love Jack Bauer more than anybody, but Keefer might even hesitate a little bit with waterboarding - that is, unless you're pouring booze instead of water. Apparently Jack Bauer's phone connection to THE PRESIDENT was cut off in the hour of Jack's most dire need - when he was pulled over by a couple of hack black and white's from the LAPD.I blame the CIA - they have always been jealous of jack's work at CTU.
