From the depths of the engineering buildings comes RAVI-Bot
While so many of the engineering kids are hiding away in the depths of their buildings, I thought this was actually a pretty cool project to check out. It's a robotic SITAR that plays something that sounds a lot like "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison....check it out While so many of the engineering kids are hiding away in the depths of their buildings, I thought this was actually a pretty cool proj... more

Hey Day 2007
Have an opinion about Hey Day? As a senior this year I wa so glad to find this clip on YouTube, because by digital camera was broken and I couldn't take pictures myself.
Hey Day is the tradition that celebrates the last day of classes in the Spring semester of each year, which offically inaugurates the rising Senior class. However, given the heavy load of drinking / food throwing each year, it's continually questioned whether the school will allow it.
Have an opinion? Personally, the whole day was one of my best memories going to Penn. Chime in if you have other thoughts to share. Maybe we can finally find a way to keep the tradition on track. Magic tricks and Jesus....interesting
I thought everyone should see this...I'm not quite sure how magic tricks bought at the local shop is a logical tactic for converting people to Christianity, but there's a part of this clip where he recruits a young girl to help him with his show which I thought was particularly disturbing. She's mesmerized by his tricks, but she has no idea what he's trying to do (i.e. preach).
It's a difficult topic to approach though, because I'm not quite sure whether these kinds of activities should be allowed on campuses without a religious affiliation. But then again our University is a public place, and open for a variety of public activity.

LIGHT GRAFFITI -- Thank god for creativity on campus
I heard about this guys work because he's friends with someone who I'm working with in a film class. He uses a slow shutter speed to create incredible images with light in the night, and this film really showcases how someone even at a pre-professional, Whartonite place like U.Penn can be incredibly creative.
I especially like how he uses a combo of stop motion animation and photography, and he's really well spoken about the craft itself...

Frustrated ranchers go out day after day to repair cut fences and pick up the trash that endangers their livestock and livelihoods. Humanitarian groups place water stations in the desert in an attempt to save lives. Political activists rally against anti-migrant ballot initiatives and try to counter rampant fear mongering. Farmers who depend on the illegal work force face each day with the fear that they may lose their workers to a border patrol sweep. And now there are the Minutemen, an armed citizen patrol group taking border security into their own hands. Crossing Arizona reveals the surprising political stances people take when immigration and border policy fails everyone. I was lucky to have stopped by, and pick up some footage of what was going on with my digital camera.

Teach for America? Wendy Kopp speaks at Penn
I know a lot of people are intruiged by the idea of Teach for America. It's a great way to give back, work on our resume, and avoid the reality of actually working in an office 5 days a week right after college.
I was lured by the idea of it too, but have recently come across a variety of media and personal stories that have proved a little less...well...attractive.
Today Wendy Kopp, founder of Teach for America, is coming to speak at Penn, for a lecture and Q&A session at 4:30 p.m. in Huntsman Hall Auditorium G06. I won't be able to make the series, but hopefully she'll address some of the more negative press about self-selecting to ivy leaguers and the like when she speaks.
I'll keep you posted, and if anyone else can post on her speech, i'd be really interested to hear about what she says. I know a lot of people are intruiged by the idea of Teach for America. It's a great way to give back, work on our resume, and avoid th... more -
