    • Million-mile truck for sale

CATAWBA, Wis. - The owner of a 1991 Chevrolet Silverado that's traveled more than a million miles is parting with what he calls his "old girl."

Frank Oresnik says his pickup will go on sale Thursday night on eBay. The minimum bid is $30,000.

The 58-year-old northern Wisconsin man attracted attention in February when he reached the million-mile mark while doing a live interview on public radio.

He says that the truck has had four radiators, three gas tanks and five transmissions but that the engine is original.

He racked up much of the mileage delivering seafood from a Chicago supplier to Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

Oresnik says he hopes the buyer will display the truck.

    • Deadly Tolls: Sick truckers causing fatal wrecks

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Tractor-trailer and bus drivers in the United States have suffered seizures, heart attacks or unconscious spells behind the wheel that led to deadly crashes on highways. Hundreds of thousands of drivers carry commercial licenses even though they also qualify for full federal disability payments, according to a new U.S. safety study obtained by The Associated Press.

The problems threatening highway travelers persist despite years of government warnings and hundreds of deaths and injuries blamed on commercial truck and bus drivers who blacked out, collapsed or suffered major health problems behind the wheels of vehicles that can weigh 40 tons or more."

They have some examples of truck drivers with medical conditions and what type of accidents they've gotten into, as well as statements from truck drivers. Gee, I always wondered why there are so many tractor trailer accidents!

    • GM cuts white collar jobs, light truck production.

"General Motors Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner is expected to announce this morning white-collar job cuts, changes to executive compensation and financial arrangements aimed at calming Wall Streets fears of a bankruptcy by the world's largest automaker.

GM announced plans at its annual meeting June 3 to close four North American truck plants by mid-2010, increase car production and consider selling its Hummer brand. Since then, the automaker has cut planned 2008 truck production by 170,000 units, added 47,000 units of car production and indefinitely frozen development of its next-generation large trucks."

    • Ford developing low displacement EcoBoost truck engines.

"With gas prices putting many Americans near the breaking point -- and sending sales of full-size trucks and SUVs downward -- Ford is looking to downsize its powertrain offerings for the F-150. According to Ford Product Chief Derrick Kuzak, the F-150 may be offered with an EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. The turbocharged four-banger would provide in excess of 260 HP and 300 lb-ft of torque. For comparison, the current base V6 provides 202 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the smallest V8 offering is rated at 248 HP and 294 lb-ft of torque." • Toyota to build Prius in US, stops truck production

"The company said Thursday it will start producing the Prius in 2010 at a plant it is building in Blue Springs, Miss. Toyota already builds a hybrid version of the Camry sedan in Kentucky, but this will be the first time the Prius, which has been on sale for more than a decade, will be built outside of Asia." -MSNBC

Toyota is also planning on temporarily stopping US production of its trucks and large SUVs because of declining demand. The plants will either temporarily close or build hybrid SUVs instead.

This is great news both for the environment and for our economy. It will ultimately result in more jobs for Americans and strengthen the "green-collar" job market. This is evidence of our economy's shift in the right direction.

      What do you think?

Aside from having really high suicide rates, Japan is a relatively safe place to live. So, anything out of the peaceful ordinary is worth bringing up.

"Police said Wednesday they are preparing to serve Tomohiro Kato with an arrest warrant for murdering seven people on the streets of Tokyo's Akihabara district on June 8... The truck and knife rampage left seven dead and 10 wounded."

Thousands of truck drivers in Spain are on an indefinite strike over diesel fuel prices. Prices have risen over 20% since January.

The Spanish government is preparing a plan to assist the drivers, with emergency loans and better contracts.

Several trucks that crossed the picket lines had their windshields broken, their lights ripped out and their tires slashed.

    • SUVs on the brink of extinction

General Motors is expected to announce that it will stop production at four truck plants in North America.

GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner is set to meet with reporters for an update on the automaker's restructuring plans before the company's annual meeting.

The plants slated for closure are in Janesville, Wisconsin; Moraine, Ohio; Silao, Mexico; and Oshawa, Ontario, according to the Canadian Auto Workers union official, who asked not to be named.

The expected plant closures come as GM tries to shore up a restructuring plan that has been overrun by a steep decline in U.S. sales of pickup trucks and SUVs in the face of record gas prices and tighter credit

It was unclear whether the planned shutdowns would be permanent or whether GM would use some portion of the plants for production of more fuel-efficient cars or crossover vehicles in response to the shifting U.S. market.

    • G.M. Closing 4 Plants in Shift From Trucks Toward Cars

Responding to a consumer shift to more fuel-efficient vehicles, General Motors said Tuesday that it would stop making pickup trucks and big S.U.V.s at four North American assembly plants and would consider selling its Hummer brand.

The moves, announced Tuesday by the company chairman, Rick Wagoner, will slash 500,000 units from the automaker’s overall production, and pave the way for increased investment in smaller cars and passenger vehicles. Within three years, he said, trucks will account for less than 40 percent of the vehicles that G.M. produces in North America, down from about half today.

Mr. Wagoner said that rising gasoline prices had forced a “structural shift” by American consumers away from truck-based vehicles built by G.M.

“These prices are changing consumer behavior and changing it rapidly,” Mr. Wagoner said in announcing the cuts before G.M.’s centennial shareholders meeting in Wilmington, Del. “We don’t believe it’s a spike or a temporary shift. We believe it is, by and large, permanent.”

In what he called “difficult” decisions, Mr. Wagoner said that G.M. would close plants in Janesville, Wisc.; Moraine, Ohio; Oshawa, Ontario; and Toluca, Mexico by or before 2010.

The cuts will affect about 8,000 workers at the four plants, although not all of those people will lose their jobs. Some will be able to fill spots created when other workers leave because of early retirement and buyout offers.

The actions follow previous moves to cut shifts at two truck plants in Michigan.

    • Drunken man awakes inside garbage truck

After a night of drinking with friends, William M. Bowen woke up to find himself in a garbage truck full of waste.

The driver of the truck had just emptied trash in to the his truck when he heard Bowen screaming. All Bowen said was that he was cold.

One would think with all the trash he would be warm, all snuggled and such.

Bowen doesn't know how he got in the trash can and would not tell police who his friends were (way to not be a tattle tale - give you props).

How do you think he got in the garbage truck? A dare, and really cruel practical joke?
