Brad Pitt Partnering to Design 5 Star Eco-Hotel in Dubai
Brad Pitt is once again diving into green building, recently announcing a collaboration with LA-based architecture firm GRAFT to design a 5-star “green resort” in Dubai. People are a bit skeptical about the project being called both “socially-conscious” and “an 800-room luxury hotel and adjoining leisure complex,” but we’ll see how it unfolds. No details or location have been announced yet, but given Brad’s friendship with Frank Gehry and his commitment to Global Green, I'm excited to see how the progresses. Earth First! blockades dominion power Head Quarters
Some folks in our Bio-Region are heating things up on coal. Check out more pictures.
“Richmond VA – At 7:55am Tuesday morning, activists with Blue Ridge Earth First! established a blockade at the entrance to Dominion Power’s James River headquarters. Three youth activists locked themselves to one another, blocking both lanes of the only road in and out of the office complex for close to an hour. Supporters stood-by holding signs and banners demanding “No Coal for Virginia”. This action was done in solidarity with the growing campaign challenging Dominion’s proposed coal-fired power plant in Wise County, VA.
The youth activists maintained the blockade for approximately an hour and a half. After 45 minutes, the police dragged the three locked down to the side of the road, thus permitting Dominion employees to pass to work. After the blockade, the three activists locked down received a summons for blocking traffic.
Participants traveled from all corners of the state for this action. They represent the youth voice opposed to Dominion’s coal-fired power plant. “Climate change is jeopardizing my future and I’m not going to just sit by and let Dominion lock us into another generation of dirty coal,” added Marley Green, a student who participated in the roadblock. The youth movement has been gaining momentum around this campaign, demanding Dominion and Virginia politicians implement clean, renewable energy in place of dirty coal.
“It’s clear that if this power plant is going to be stopped, we the people are going to have to stop it,” said Hannah Morgan, a former Wise County resident and current landowner who was locked down in the blockade.
Since Dominion announced its plans for the plant in 2006, protests, petitions, public comments, and other displays of opposition have poured out from communities across the state. If built, the power plant would release 5.4 million tons of CO2 annually, making it one of the biggest polluters in the state. The plant would also emit other greenhouse gases, 49 pounds of mercury, and other dangerous pollutants into our air and water. Furthermore, the plant would accelerate the rate of mountaintop removal mining in Virginia. Mountaintop removal has already destroyed 25% of Wise County’s Mountains, and threatens the lives of all Appalachians.” Some folks in our Bio-Region are heating things up on coal. The Biofuels Scam, Food Shortages and the Coming Collapse of the Human Population
By: Mike Adams
It was one of the dumbest "green" ideas ever proposed: Convert millions of acres of cropland into fields for growing ethanol from corn, then burn fossil fuels to harvest the ethanol, expending more energy to extract the fuel than you get from the fuel itself! Meanwhile, sit back and proclaim you've achieved a monumental green victory (President Bush, anyone?) all while unleashing a dangerous spike in global food prices that's causing a ripple effect of food shortages and rationing around the world.
I think politicians need to spend less time bragging about their latest greenwashing schemes and more time studying The Law of Unintended Consequences. Because while growing fuel on cropland initially sounds like a great idea, any honest assessment of the total impact leads you to the inescapable conclusion that biofuels are largely a government-sponsored scam. With a few exceptions (see below), biofuels produce no net increase in energy output, and they cause food shortages while creating strong economic incentives for the destruction of the very rainforests we desperately need to stabilize the climate!

To recycle used vegetable oil is one thing but to grow a fuel is absurd.
There are truly only three completely renewable fuel resources in the galaxy: Solar (for electricity), Wind (for electricity) and Water (for electricity and hydrogen).
Electric or hydrogen is the only answers for Vehicles.
If you know someone using new vegetable oil for there car please tell him or her that they are starving people around the world.

Oil company plans first floating wind turbine
OSLO, Norway - An oil company announced plans Thursday to build next year what it claims will be the world's first full-scale floating wind turbine.
State-controlled StatoilHydro ASA, based in the western port of Stavanger, is the key producer in the offshore oil industry that makes Norway a major petroleum exporter.
The company said the $80 million pilot project combines its offshore oil experience with advanced technology for wind power.
The 2.3 megawatt windmill will be placed about six miles off the coast of Karmoey, near Stavanger on the west coast. StatoilHydro said it has already signed contracts for the construction of the wind turbine and its floating base. The electricity will be sent to land through underwater cables.
Previous ocean windmill projects have been based on towers built onto the seabed near land, rather than floating structures. However, windmills on land or near the coast often draw complaints they spoil the view and disturb wildlife.
Since the buoy is held in place by three anchors with chains, the system could be used in waters as deep as 2,300 feet, the company said in a news release.
StatoilHydro said a 10-foot tall model of the floating unit had already been tested in a wave tank at the Norwegian research institute SINTEF in the city of Trondheim.
The company said it plans to conduct a two-year test with the unit after it is goes on line in late 2009 in hopes of demonstrating that floating wind power is commercially viable.

China to start crackdown on plastic bags
BEIJING - Making good on a promise made in January, China is becoming the latest country to ban free plastic bags, part of a government-led campaign to cut down on waste and help the environment.
The nationwide measure that goes into effect Sunday eliminates the flimsiest bags and forces stores to charge for others.
Beijing has promised to hold a green Olympic Games this summer, giving extra impetus to a number of environmental policies and projects. Officials have vowed to cut down on the "white pollution" of discarded bags that choke China's cities, farms and waterways.
The China Plastics Processing Industry Association estimates the measure will reduce the amount of plastic bags used by a third from 1.6 million tons a year. The Chinese now use 3 billion bags every day, according to the group, and they are virtually indestructible, taking years to break down and commonly ending up in China's clogged landfills. Green Ghostbusters Nab Hidden Power Leaks
Behind the drywall, your home's heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are breathing. But chances are, they're not doing a perfect job, and their malfunctions and inefficiencies aren't just bad for your wallet, they're bad for the climate, too.
San Francisco-based startup Sustainable Spaces estimates that homeowners could reduce their energy costs by up to 50 percent by taking simple steps like fixing bad duct work and installing the right insulation. And since 21 percent of U.S. energy consumption goes into American homes, greater efficiency could help reduce the country's overall energy footprint, too.
The trick is finding the hidden leaks. The company's founders call themselves "green ghostbusters" because they're tracking down ghost power drains using a panoply of high-tech gadgets that would make the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man jiggle with fear.
In this gallery, the company's Matt Golden and Jason Bowers take their gadgets through a Marin County home with a $1,000 monthly electricity bill looking for energy savings. Behind the drywall, your home's heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are breathing. But chances are, they're no... more -
iPod-wannabe be green?
Consider this: The new environmental awareness is unleashing a wave of innovation in every category of technology - including portable music and video players.
And how, you may ask, can an iPod-wannabe be green?
By being totally self-powered, for one thing. Already, there are two such players: the Media Street eMotion Solar and the Baylis Eco Media Player. Neither needs batteries or power from a cord; they can live completely off the grid.
The eMotion Solar (measuring 5.5 by 3 by 1 inch, or 14 by 7.6 by 2.54 centimeters) opens like a book, revealing two broad, black, shiny solar panels. To charge this machine, you just stick it in a sunny spot, like a windowsill. Critical Decision Time for Humans: Earth's Kyros Moment, learn focus through ...
The founders of the Turtle Island Project believe residents of Earth are facing a Kyros moment because of the abuse of the environment.
Kairos is Greek for seizing the moment.
The Turtle Island Project promotes respect for the planet, nature, wildlife and fellow humans.
Turtle Island Project founders say we can learn a lot from Earth-based cultures like the Celts and Native Americans.
Dr. Cairns said a former of chanting called jubilation (that he demonstrates in this video) helps him focus on the problems he wants to tackle - plus demonstrates the interconnection between humans and the Earth.
