Baghdad bus stop bomb 'kills 51'
A car bomb explosion at a busy bus stop in northern Baghdad has killed 51 people and left another 75 wounded, Iraqi police have said.
The explosion took place in the mainly Shia Muslim neighbourhood of Hurriya.
The bomb appeared to have been timed to go off during the early evening rush hour, when the bus stop was crowded with waiting passengers.
It is the deadliest bombing in Iraq's capital for weeks, following a security drive by Iraqi and US forces. Tuesday's blast set fire to about 20 shops and razed a multi-storey building, security officials said.
Some 500 Iraqis were killed last month, compared with more than 1,000 in April. And the toll of American soldiers killed in May - at 19 - was the lowest monthly figure since the conflict began. US warns of wave of bombings in Baghdad
"Information collected by coalition forces states that numerous AQI (al Qaeda in Iraq) terrorists have entered the Baghdad area with the purpose of carrying out vehicle-borne improvised-explosive devices or suicide vest attacks in the Karkh district of central Baghdad", the US military has cautioned. The unusual warning came after a spate of deadly bombings this week struck areas in northern Iraq, where al Qaeda militants are known to be active.
The statement said the public should be vigilant and warned specifically of intelligence that a stolen ambulance could be used as a car bomb. More than 100 people were killed in bomb attacks in northern Iraq this week.
Suicide bombs and car bombs are hallmarks of al Qaeda in Iraq, the Sunni Arab militant group that shares a name and ideology if not organizational ties with Osama bin Laden's network blamed for the September 11 attacks.
"What the American invasion of Iraq has reached, today, after five years, is failure and defeat," Bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, has said in a taped recording. "The American troops, if they leave will lose everything and if they stay will bleed to death". The authenticity of the recording could not be verified, but it sounded like Zawahiri and experts have judged similar recordings to be genuine in the past.
Some bloggers from the radical left have accused warnings such as this to be part of the US propaganda war keeping ordinary Americans in thrall to a terrorism 'myth'. Others accuse the US's international bellicosity of creating a breeding ground for recruiting new terrorists.
