Whether you agree with these soldiers or not, their first-hand stories of tours of duty in Iraq bring home the chilling reality of the war and what it means to follow orders as a soldier. Audio and video of the testamony is available from yesterday and today's shows. It is bone chilling fact and without prejudice...Five years ago tonight, on March 19, 2003, the US launched the invasion of Iraq. Half a decade later, as the occupation continues with no end in sight, some of the most powerful voices against the war have been the men and women who have fought in it. For four days this past weekend, soldiers convened at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland for Winter Soldier, an eyewitness account of the war and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. We broadcast their voices. JImmyP's comment: Amy Goodman, considered to be a left-wing agitator by a few is considered by many to be one of the last true journalists in the US. Iraq Body Count
Just something to think about when you hear "high cost of lives" "Collateral damage" something tells me americas would not be willing to put up with their friends and neighbors being shot, their houses blown up just because the military thought terrorists were hiding there.

Cherry Blossoms: Representing Iraqi civilian casualties of war
Cherry Blossoms,by Alyssa Wright, consists of a backpack fitted with a GPS unit. Information from recent bombings in Iraq are superimposed over a map of Boston and downloaded into the unit, so that when the person wearing the backpack arrives at an area where a bombing occurred in Iraq, the pack emits confetti holding the names and information of civilians who have died in the war.
From the project website:
"By restricting press access to the suffering, the government systematically obscures public knowledge, which in turn blocks affect, empathy, and protest. The moral and political defeat in Vietnam helped usher in the illusion that human loss is irrelevant to military success." Friendly Foes
Much of the reporting that we see on the American occupation in Iraq lacks unfiltered perspectives form the Iraqi people themselves. We recently came across the work of Iraqi film director Hayder Mousa Daffar. Hayder has been recording the impact of war on his people since it began in 2003. In this excerpt, he asks some very difficult questions about the American presence in his country. To help find answers, he interviews two ex-army officers with strikingly different opinions about the current occupation. Ausama, Saif and Adel learn how to shoot, film that is. In this Hometown Baghdad pod we see just how powerful a camera can be to these three young men.
