Ian Hibell, cyclist who pedalled world, killed by hit-and-run driver
A cyclist who pedalled the world for more than 40 years, braving raging rivers, soldier ants, a lion and enjoying the hospitality of an Eskimo princess, has been killed by a hit-and-run driver in Greece.
Ian Hibell, 74, was a legendary figure in the world of long-distance cycle touring setting several records and pedalling the equivalent of ten times around the Equator.
He died on the Athens to Salonika highway on August 23, when he was struck by a car apparently involved in a race with another motorist. The driver left the scene but was arrested two days later and charged with causing death by dangerous driving. CPSC Says Company Refuses To Recall Bassinets That Strangled Two Infants
I don't know if this has been posted before but people need to know about this.
"The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging parents and caregivers to stop using convertible “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinets manufactured by Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa. CPSC has learned that on August 21, 2008, a 5-month-old girl from Shawnee, Kan. was strangled to death when she became entrapped between the bassinet’s metal bars. This is the second strangulation death CPSC has learned of in the co-sleeper bassinets. On September 29, 2007, a 4-month-old girl from Noel, Mo. became entrapped in the metal bars of the bassinet and died.
CPSC is issuing this safety alert because SFCA Inc., the company which purchased all of Simplicity Inc.’s assets at public auction in April 2008, has refused to cooperate with the government and recall the products. SFCA maintains that it is not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity Inc.
The Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets contain metal bars spaced farther apart than 2 3/8 inches, which is the maximum distance allowed under the federal crib safety standard. The metal bars are covered by an adjustable fabric flap which is attached by velcro. The fabric is folded down when the bassinet is converted into a bed-side co-sleeping position. If the velcro is not properly re-secured when the flap is adjusted, an infant can slip through the opening and become entrapped in the metal bars and suffocate. I don't know if this has been posted before but people need to know about this. ... more -

Dave Matthews Band sax player LeRoi Moore dies
LOS ANGELES – Dave Matthews Band saxophone player LeRoi Moore, one of the group's founding members and a key part of its eclectic jazz-infused sound, died Tuesday from sudden complications stemming from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident in June. He was 46.
Moore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, according to a statement released on the band's Web site. The statement did not specify what led to his death.
Moore was initially hospitalized in late June after the accident on his farm outside Charlottesville, Va. He was later discharged and had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin a physical rehabilitation program when complications forced him back to the hospital on July 17, the band said.
Galina Shinder, a nursing supervisor at Hollywood Presbyterian, said the hospital could not release any details.
Ambrosia Healy, the band's publicist, said the band's show Tuesday night in Los Angeles was not canceled. Saxophonist Jeff Coffin, who played with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, had been sitting in for Moore during the band's summer tour.
Moore, who liked to wear his trademark dark sunglasses at the bands' live concerts, had classical training but said jazz was his main musical influence, according to a biography on the band's Web site.
"But at this stage I don't really consider myself a jazz musician," Moore said in the biography. Playing with the Dave Matthews Band was "almost better than a jazz gig," he said. "I have plenty of space to improvise, to try new ideas."
Lead singer Dave Matthews credited Moore with arranging many of his songs, which combine Cajun fiddle-playing, African-influenced rhythms and Matthews' playful but haunting voice.
The band formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, Va., when Matthews was working as a bartender. He gave a demo tape of his songs to Moore, who liked what he heard and recruited his friend and fellow jazzman Carter Beauford to play drums, and other musicians.
The group broke out of the local music scene with the album "Under the Table and Dreaming." The band won a Grammy Award in 1997 for its hit song "So Much to Say" off its second album "Crash." Other hits include "What Would You Say," "Crash Into Me" and "Satellite." Singer Ronnie Drew dies after long illness
Drew founded the then Ronnie Drew Group in 1962 which later came to be known as The Dubliners.
The group included fellow Irish music legends Luke Kelly, Ciaran Bourke and Barney McKenna.
Drew will be best remembered for his gravelly-voiced renditions of rabble-rousing folk songs, like Finnegan's Wake and Dicey Reilly.
Drew sang one of the band's biggest commercial hits, when they entered the UK top 10 in 1967 with Seven Drunken Nights and appeared on the BBC's Top of the Pops.
In 1995 they appeared once again on the show with Shane McGowan and the Pogues, who performed with Drew on their single The Irish Rover.

Woman's corpse may be link to mystery baby
An autopsy on a woman's body found in an apartment linked to a mystery newborn baby found that the woman was partially eviscerated and her uterus was cut open, authorities said Saturday.
The body was found Friday in an apartment of another woman who showed up at a hospital with a newborn she falsely claimed was hers.
Investigators were trying to determine the woman's identity, how she died and whether she was the mother of the baby that Andrea Curry-Demus allegedly told police she bought for $1,000.
The victim appeared to have been dead for about two days before she was found, Allegheny County Medical Examiner Karl Williams said in a statement.
The woman's hands and feet were bound with duct tape, and her face was covered with a plastic material that had also been secured with duct tape. A placenta was recovered at the apartment.
Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg, showed up at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh on Thursday with a newborn whose umbilical cord was still attached, police said. Tests later proved she was not the mother -- despite her claims to the contrary, police said.
Curry-Demus was charged with child endangerment and dealing in infant children. She has been jailed until she posts $10,000 bond and undergoes a psychiatric exam.
The jail wouldn't say whether Curry-Demus had an attorney, and a message left for an attorney who has previously represented her was not immediately returned.
The woman's body was found Friday after reporters called authorities about a foul odor coming from inside Curry-Demus' apartment.
Police had been at the building Thursday night, but did not enter that apartment, Wilkinsburg Police Chief Ophelia Coleman said. A relative of Curry-Demus had led them to another apartment, she said. An autopsy on a woman's body found in an apartment linked to a mystery newborn baby found that the woman was partially eviscerate... more -
Tropical storm kills 14 in Taiwan
"A tropical storm lashed Taiwan on Friday, killing at least seven people, an emergency official told CNN.
Another six were hurt and six more were missing, according to the official at the island's Central Response Center.
The missing included a husband and wife who were swept away by fast-rising creek water, officials said.
Tropical Storm Kalmaegi dumped heavy rain on central and southern Taiwan, causing problems in places such as Taichung, a city in central Taiwan.
The eye of the storm left Taiwan on Friday, but storm clouds lingered, and forecasters warned of heavy rain and the possibility of mudslides in central and southern regions of the island, particularly in mountainous areas.
Flooding was reported in many low-lying areas, particularly in southern Taiwan, according to the island's Central News Agency. It published a photo of knee-deep water on a highway in Kaohsiung County. Flood waters rose to the height of two stories in one city, officials said.
Officials said that water was cut off from more than 650,000 households because of flooding in Tainan county, also in southern Taiwan, The Associated Press reported.
Forecasters expect the storm to hit coastal areas of southeastern China late Friday, prompting authorities to plan for possible flooding in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, according to China's state-run Xinhua news agency.
Boats and ships from those provinces have been ordered back to port, the agency said."

Two found dead at Norway rock festival
Police say two people have been found dead at a music festival in southern Norway headlined by Alice Cooper.
The victims were found in or near a bus at the Festival in Kvinesdal.
"We do not know exactly how they died, but we assume they suffocated on fumes while they were on the bus," said police spokesperson Asbjorn Enoksen.
Six more festival-goers were taken to hospital after being found outside the vehicle, he told the AFP news agency.
Preliminary hospital reports indicated carbon monoxide poisoning could have been a cause.
All of the victims were believed to be Norwegian citizens in their 20s and 30s, Enosken added.
The names of the two who died have not been disclosed.
The Kvinesdal festival was established in 2006 and this weekend's events are expected to continue despite the deaths.
