Small electric cars in Vancouver
Vancouver is recommending traffic laws be changed to require such cars to stay on the right-hand side of the street except when turning left or passing. The province had previously restricted the cars - which legally can't drive faster than 40 km/h - to streets with speed limits less than this limit, but municipalities are allowed to alter this rule. Toyota cuts its sales forecast by 7%
Toyota Motor yesterday cut its 2009 sales forecast by 700,000 vehicles, about 7 per cent, as it acknowledged that the downturn in the US car market would last at least until the end of next year. It now expects to sell 9.7m cars and trucks worldwide next year instead of 10.4m.
Toyota, Japan's leading carmaker, said there had been a "structural change" in demand in the US, the world's biggest car market, as the high cost of fuel pushed customers away from large trucks and 4x4 vehicles, suggesting that lower sales in those once-profitable segments would continue beyond the economic downturn.
In a sign of its renewed focus on fuel-efficient -vehicles, Toyota said it would bring forward the launch of a "plug-in" petrolelectric hybrid, which it will offer to fleet buyers by the end of next year.
In scaling back its sales forecast, Toyota put off until at least 2010 its goal of becoming the first carmaker to sell 10m vehicles in a single year.
While Toyota expects the US downturn to remain its biggest challenge, its revised estimates painted a gloomy picture for vehicle demand worldwide.
The carmaker cut its North American forecast by 300,000 units to 2.7m - the same volume it expects this year - and sliced 150,000 units each off its projections for Europe, Japan and the rest of Asia.
High prices for steel and other raw materials have made it difficult for carmakers to cut prices to stimulate demand. Toyota Motor yesterday cut its 2009 sales forecast by 700,000 vehicles, about 7 per cent, as it acknowledged that the downturn in the ... more -
No surprise: high-MPG vehicles expected to retain more value
"Both lease finance companies and owners trying to sell gas-guzzling trucks have been taking a bath on re-sale values of those vehicles. With so many trucks and SUVs suddenly showing up on auction lots and used car lots, the value of these vehicles has simply tanked as supply far exceeds demand. We've already seen exactly the opposite be true for smaller more efficient vehicles as people snap up nearly 20 year old Metros for up to $7,000..."
