Why We Love Al Davis
With all the talk of "mavericks" in this election season, we in Current's PDIG, as part of our enduring Commitment to Excellence, would like to celebrate the true original maverick of the AFL and NFL - the man who defied Pete Rozelle, the master of the vertical passing game, the progenitor of pride and poise, the only man who could give George Steinbrenner tips on how to fire a coach, the denizen of the track suit, the individual solely responsible for the continuing presence of Brylcreem on our drugstore shelves, the Managing General Partner of the mighty Oakland Raiders himself, the inimitable Allen "Al" Davis.
Please feel free to share your thoughts and memories of this towering and still ever-so-vital presence on the American sporting landscape. With all the talk of "mavericks" in this election season, we in Current's PDIG, as part of our enduring Commitment to E... more -
Are McCain and Palin really Republicans?
Over the years, Republicans have used lots of tactics to win presidential elections. But here's one I never expected to see: running as Democrats.
That's the idea behind the latest TV spot for John McCain and Sarah Palin. It brags about things that are generally more congenial to Democratic voters than to Reaganites. McCain, it tells us, "took on the drug industry," while Palin "took on Big Oil." It goes on: "He battled Republicans and reformed Washington. She battled Republicans and reformed Alaska." Not a word about battling Democrats. If you didn't know better, you'd think they had just been nominated by the party of Roosevelt and Clinton.
This is just the latest feint in that direction. An earlier McCain ad said, "Washington is broken," and "We're worse off than we were four years ago"--neglecting to mention that his party has controlled the presidency for the last eight years and both houses of Congress for most of the last 14. Usually, when you say the country is worse off than it was four years ago, you're asking voters to evict the president's party.
That commercial, too, sounded themes shamelessly plagiarized from John Edwards: "Only McCain has taken on Big Tobacco, the drug companies . . . He'll reform Wall Street, battle Big Oil." Anti-capitalist populism may be dead in the Democratic party, but it seems to have found new life in the GOP.
Will this work? There's no telling, but if McCain and Palin think it's a good idea to impersonate Democrats, Barack Obama and Joe Biden might want to make sure voters know who the real Democrats are. Over the years, Republicans have used lots of tactics to win presidential elections. But here's one I never expected to see: runn... more -
Just who are DETAILS Mavericks of 2008?
Mavericks are incorrigible. They habitually ruffle feathers. They cute through the bullshit. They reinvent and reimagine. If they see something that isn't broken; they fix it anyways - whether it's a hybrid car or a search engine or reality TV. Visionary thinking is their gateway drug. The rest of us can scratch our chins and snicker about the feasibility of their ideas, but these enterprising risk takers in media, technology, politics, and entertainment are to busy executing to listen. DETAILS Magazine has picked 22 men and women from who tangible innovation is an addiction-- and who creative compulsions are shaping the world.

Maverick's surf contest window has officially opened.
From today until the end of March, Maverick's now contest director Jeff Clark will bury his head in satellite readings, storm charts and buoy counts in hopes that something wicked will come this way from the Gulf of Alaska. My prediction, this contest will happen very soon.

John Peel Day. Let's celebrate a great man
John Peel was as unique as they come, in that he was comfortable being nothing but himself on the radio, in spite of what was said of him, and in doing so became a maverick of the UK music scene. He flew the flag for small bands, world music artists and terrible but completely authentic acts that no-one else would play. I loved him for that and for his endearing honesty about life. We miss you, sir. Very much. John Peel was as unique as they come, in that he was comfortable being nothing but himself on the radio, in spite of what was said of ... more

Golden Upset
We Believe has been the motto of Golden State fans who havent had a playoff series win since 1991. Warrior fans who paid a pretty penny for their tickets sure didnt seem to have much use for them. The home crowd rocked Oracle Arena wearing yellow shirts, flashing posters and cranking up the volume for Thursday night's game against the Mavericks. The Warriors made NBA playoff history and sent Mark Cuban and his team on an early summer vacation. Charles Barkley, eat your heart out. The Golden State Warriors will advance to the second round.
