    • Getting On, Getting Around

This sensitive character portrait follows Nancy, a wonderful 97-year old lady, who lives alone.
The film explores mobility and social interaction, but from a much-neglected perspective: that of the elderly. Despite the increasing life expentancy of those in the West, and a growing aging population to outnumber the young, relatively little attention is paid in the media to 'the older generation'. This film seeks to shed some light into what may lie ahead, and inspire us with Nancy's healthy good humour.

    • Tokyo shop sells PM favourite as cool old dude

A souvenir shop in Tokyo is offering a range of items all bearing the grinning face of "cool old dude" Taro Aso, 68-year-old frontrunner in the race to be Japan's next prime minister - everything from bean buns to kimono belts have been stamped with his features in this latest campaign to win over Japan's more politically apathetic youth.

Apparently Aso is also into manga and showy suits.

Would a politician branding himself as 'cool old dude' win your vote? Or do you reckon some of the punch has been lost in translation..?

    • World's oldest man celebrates 113th birthday

The world's oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday on Thursday. Tomoji Tanabe told reporters at his home in southern Japan about his joyful life and healthy appetite.

"I'm happy," said Tanabe as the local mayor presented him with flowers and a giant tea cup glazed with his name and date of birth. "I'm well. I eat a lot," he added.

Tanabe, recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest living male last year, eats mostly vegetables and believes the key to longevity is not drinking alcohol. The former civil servant lives with his son, drinks milk every day and has no major illnesses, although he now writes in his diary only once or twice a month. He used to write on a daily basis.

"His favourite food is fried shrimp, but we've heard that he's cut back on oily food," said an official at his hometown of Miyakonojo, about 900 km (560 miles) southwest of Tokyo. "He's said he wants to live for another 10 years, that he doesn't want to die."

The Japanese are among the world's longest-lived people, with the number of those aged 100 or older at a record 36,276, a government report last week showed. Japanese women have topped the world's longevity ranks for 23 years, while men rank third after Iceland and Hong Kong

    • 205 years old: Meet Britain's oldest married couple

Phyliss Tarrant has just turned 100 and along with her husband Ralph, 105, it makes them Britain's oldest married couple with an impressive 205 years between them.

Phyliss put their long lives and long-lasting relationship down to "getting on with each other, a good diet, exercise, avoiding cigarettes and a tot of whisky each night".

Mrs Tarrant, from Broomhill, Sheffield, said: "I suppose now I'm 100 I should be counted as being old. But I don't feel it, and I've some way to go to catch Ralph up. I'm just so pleased to have retained my health, and my marbles. I am fortunate that I can still do my own housework and cooking and Ralph helps out by going to the supermarket to do the shopping."

Mr Tarrant added: "My ambition was to beat my grandmother who lived to be 103 so I'm well past that now. Quite a few of my family had very long lives so maybe it's all in the genes - it's just that we have been able to stay reasonably fit and health for our ages and still be together in our own home. Some people are not that lucky. We don't like to sit around all the time, we both like to get out and about."

The couple met in 1922 - the year the BBC began broadcasting radio to the nation - and their romance started four years later. They were married on July 8th 1933 and have two daughters Brenda, 71, and Christine, 61 as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    • Should McCain take an alzheimers test?

"McCain's age is no joke. He will turn 72 on Friday and would be halfway to 73 if elected and sworn in on January 20. That would make him the oldest first-term President ever, two years older than Ronald Reagan. He has survived four skin cancers (melanomas), including one in 2000 that was classified as Stage IIa.

McCain is two years older than his father was when he died suddenly of a heart attack at 70. He is 11 years older than his grandfather was when he died suddenly of a heart attack at age 61.

McCain's medical records are not available to physicians. He did not "release" them for the campaign; he only allowed hand-picked reporters to examine them quickly without making copies. And there were no results of an Alzheimer's test, because McCain has never had one - even though he has 6 of the 10 warning signs, including his inability to remember facts like the number of homes he owns or the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003."

      -Taken from Democrats.com.

Depsite the paritsan nature of the subject, it's still a valid question. Do we really want a president who could possily be suffering from a mental disorder such as Dementia or Alzheimers? Sign the petition if you want, but I'm more curious to know how people will react to this. So, should McCain have to take an Alzheimer's test?

    • Campaign to lower drinking age to prevent binge drinking

A new campaign highlighting campus alcohol abuse won heavyweight support this week as top college presidents signed a statement urging consideration of lowering the drinking age, but the effort is already encountering a powerful backlash.

More than 100 college presidents, including leaders at Dartmouth, Duke and Middlebury, have joined the month-old Amethyst Initiative, which argues that "the 21-year-old drinking age is not working" and "has created a culture of dangerous binge drinking."

John McCardell, a history professor and former president of Middlebury College in Vermont, is leading the effort. His group, Choose Responsibility, a nonprofit unaffiliated with the college, has received financial backing from money manger Julian Robertson. Mr. McCardell says he receives no money from the alcohol industry.

He argues current laws drive drinking underground, causing more problems than they solve. "The law is out of step with reality," he says. "The law is so obviously unjust and discriminatory. It ought to at least be the subject of debate."

But he and the college presidents are taking on powerful constituencies, including some of their colleagues, the top government traffic-safety agency, the insurance industry and public-health authorities, all of which say the higher drinking age saves lives. Even representatives of the alcohol industry say they support current laws.

Laura Dean-Mooney, president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, says she is alarmed by the initiative. The mother of a 17-year-old high-school senior, she says she wouldn't want her child to go to a school whose presidents had signed the statement, saying it sent the message, "It's OK to drink underage."

The debate dates to 1984, when Congress imposed a penalty of 10% of a state's federal highway funds on any state that set its drinking age lower than 21. With billions of dollars at stake, states complied.

    • Can Gummi Bears be good for your skin?

For much of the 19th century and early 20th century there were a variety of "cures" for all the ailments of mankind. Diabetes Cures, Kidney Failure Cures, Dimentia Cures could all be had by drinking the special "snake sauce" concoctions from the "music men".

Fast forward to the 21st century where science and innovation are about and products like Red Bull can "give you "wings" and Vitamin Water(s) can energize, calm, fortify immunity and increase attention spans to name a few. Now larger brands have jumped onto the bandwagon, with products such as Diet Coke with Vitamin and Minerals, Crystal Light and their variety of "body enhancers".

In 2004 a company was born to focus on one claim and one type of ingestible "cure" - the skin care company Borba http://www.borba.com). Their line of skin care products include the usual topical products with antioxident infused ingredients, but they also have waters that are designed to focus on a variety of skin care ailments and confections, such as gummi bears which claims the benefits of "enhanced" skin care. Their site showcases that both their topical products and ingestible products have amazing testimonials posted from their customers - but is this a placebo effect?

Has our obsessions with easy remedies and our advancement in science allowed us to achieve the quick fix via targeted dietary products? 60 years ago, we couldn't get into outer space, 120 years ago, we couldn't fly, 200 years ago we couldn't utilize electricity and 500 years ago chocolate was foriegn to western civilization. Perhaps in 2004 we finally figured out how to turn led into gold.

    • We drink less as we get older, but boozing by younger generations is on the declin...

American adults aren't drinking as much alcohol as they used to, and by the time they reach their 80s, more than 40 percent of men and 60 percent of women say they don't drink at all, according to the first analysis of adults' drinking habits over several decades.

Men and women also appear to be drinking more wine and less beer as they get older.

The study, published in the August issue of the American Journal of Medicine, is based on survey responses from more than 8,000 participants in the Framingham Heart Study. Residents of Framingham, Mass., a mostly white, middle-class community, and their children were interviewed about their drinking habits every two to four years between 1948 and 2003.

Researchers from Boston University Medical Center found that adults drank less alcohol as they aged. And each generation drank less than their parents' generation.

For instance, middle-age people in the 1950s and 1960s drank about one-third more than people of the same age in the 1970s.

The study's authors say they aren't sure why alcohol consumption declines with age.

"The level of education improved throughout the study, and more-educated people tend to drink less, so this may be one reason," said Dr. R. Curtis Ellison, with the Boston University School of Medicine.

Jefferson Park resident George Scott, who's 55, said there's also "more of a social stigma attached" to excessive drinking than there was in previous generations.

And drunken driving enforcement is tougher, too, said 46-year-old Tom Hamming.

"When we were in our teens and we got caught doing that, you'd get a slap on the wrist," Hamming said. "Now if you get caught doing that, you're gone."

Hamming's wife, Therese, added that people are more aware of the health hazards associated with drinking and smoking.

    • In Vitro Fertilization: Not Just For The Infertile

"Omkari Panwar has given new meaning to the idea that 70 is the new 60. Or perhaps 70 is the new 30?

Earlier this month, the 70-year-old mother of two daughters and grandmother to five gave birth via Cesarean section to twins, a boy and girl, at a hospital in India’s Uttar Pradesh state after undergoing infertility treatment. If her age can be verified — she has no birth certificate — she would become the oldest woman ever to give birth.

This startling birth raises all sorts of ethical questions, particularly whether a 70-year-old should be accepted as a patient by any infertility program. But there is yet another twist to this birth. It comes almost exactly 30 years after a woman named Lesley Brown gave birth, also via C-section, in a hospital near Manchester, England. Brown was the mother of the very first baby created by in vitro fertilization, the very technique used in the Indian septuagenarian birth."

There is much more to this article, if you are inerested check it out and let me know your thoughts on this subject.
