McDonald's Tests Changes In $1 Burger as cost Rise
Oak Brook, Ill. -- McDonald's Corp. is testing modifications to its popular $1 double cheeseburger, and higher prices for the sandwich, as it prepares to change its Dollar Menu by next year.
In an interview, Don Thompson, president of McDonald's U.S. business, said the company has tested ways to make the burger less expensive to make. Some restaurants are selling it with one slice of cheese instead of two, and billing it as a "double hamburger with cheese." Others are offering a double hamburger without cheese. Some are selling the traditional double cheeseburger at prices ranging from $1.09 to $1.19.
Company is also considering expanding what it considers the middle tier of its menu, items ranging from about $1.30 to $2. "We know customers are facing tough times in this economy," Mr. Thompson said.
Launched in 2003, the Dollar Menu has been a key driver of sales at McDonald's 14,000 U.S. restaurants and has helped it ride out dips in consumer spending. But recently, franchisees have complained that the menu has brought too much unprofitable traffic into their restaurants.
The biggest question for the eight-item menu is what to do with the double cheeseburger, considered its anchor. High dairy prices have pushed up the cost of cheese, and McDonald's predicts more pressure because its beef costs will be higher this year. Mr. Thompson said if McDonald's moves the double cheeseburger off that menu, there would still be some type of $1 burger.
Internal sales documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal show that, as of late June, sales of the chain's lattes, cappuccinos and other espresso drinks were off their peak in several main markets where they're being sold. Mr. Thompson said "the numbers really don't tell the story."
Lower-priced beverages, including $1.89 iced coffee and a $1 fountain-drink and sweet-tea promotion, have pulled some sales away from the espresso drinks, which range from about $2 to $3. That was something the company hadn't anticipated, he said.
McDonald's overall beverage expansion, adding espresso drinks, smoothies, cold tea, bottled drinks and ice-blended coffee beverages at U.S. locations, is on track to exceed the company's goal of adding $125,000 a year in sales per restaurant, even though it doesn't yet have national advertising behind it, Mr. Thompson said. He sees McDonald's target of the drinks adding $1 billion a year to the company's sales as "definitely achievable." The rollout will be complete at the end of 2009. Teens might be marking your SATs
In an effort to clear the backlog of SAT tests in Britain, "people who have just passed their A-levels" were hired to mark the papers, according to the chairman of the education and skills committee. He claims that ETS hired both grads and non-grads to mark the papers. And even with this extra help, only 80% of SAT results would be released by the end of term this week, and another 120,000 pupils will have to wait until September to get their grades. Iranian missile tests prompt US warning

The US has warned Iran to stop missile testing if it wants to gain the trust of the world, after "war games" in the Gulf today that Iranian officials said were a response to US and Israeli threats.
Iran demonstrated its military force when it test-fired nine long and medium range missiles in the strategic Strait of Hormouz, through which 40% of the world's oil passes.
Speaking from Japan where President George Bush has attended the G8 summit, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the Iranians should "refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world".
"The Iranian regime only furthers the isolation of the Iranian people from the international community when it engages in this sort of activity," he said.
Washington said Iran's development of ballistic missiles violated UN security council resolutions.
But it added that the US was committed to pursuing a diplomatic solution to the impasse over Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The practice shots by Iran's elite revolutionary guards were another in a series of conflicting messages coming out of the country over its nuclear programme and relations with the US and Israel.
General Hossein Salami, the guards' navy commander, told state television today that the test missiles exercise, called "The Great Prophet 3", would "demonstrate our resolve and might against enemies who in recent weeks have threatened Iran with harsh language".
An Iranian news agency quoted Salami as saying: "Our hands are always on the trigger and our missiles are ready for launch."
But less than a day ago, the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, dismissed fears that Israel and the United States could be preparing to attack his country, calling the possibility a "funny joke".
At a press conference during a visit to Malaysia yesterday, Ahmadinejad said: "I assure you that there won't be any war in the future."
The G8 expressed "serious concern" over the risks posed by Iran's nuclear programme and urged Tehran to suspend all uranium enrichment-related activities.
"We call on Iran to respond to the updated incentives package in a constructive manner," a G8 statement said today. "We also urge Iran to act in a more responsible and constructive manner in the region, particularly in the context of the Middle East peace process and the stability of Iraq and Afghanistan."
Television reports said the missiles fired included a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which officials have said has a range of 1,250 miles and is equipped with a conventional warhead weighing a tonne.
Such a missile could reach Israel, Turkey, Afghanistan or Pakistan.
Israel's military has also flexed its muscles in recent months as tensions with Iran have risen, sending warplanes over the eastern Mediterranean in June.
US officials described that incident as a possible rehearsal for a strike on Iran's nuclear programme, which the west fears is aimed at producing atomic weapons.
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev today said Israel "does not desire hostility and conflict with Iran". Angela Balakrishnan and agencies guardian.co.uk, Wednesday July 9, 2008 Article history Link to this video ... more -
Students get higher marks for writing 'F*ck off' on exams
Write ‘f*ck off’ on a GCSE paper and you’ll get 7.5%. Add an exclamation mark and it’ll go up to 11%.
One pupil who wrote 'f*ck off' was given marks for accurate spelling and conveying a meaning successfully.
His paper was marked by Peter Buckroyd, a chief examiner who has instructed fellow examiners to mark in the same way. He told trainee examiners recently to adhere strictly to the mark scheme, to the extent that pupils who wrote only expletives on their papers should be awarded points.
Hey, if you know how to spell 'f*ck off' and use it correctly in a sentence, you might as well use it to your advantage, right? Write ‘f*ck off’ on a GCSE paper and you’ll get 7.5%. Add an exclamation mark and it’ll go up to 11%. ... more -
New law allows roadside blood and urine testing of Canadian drivers
Note: Here in the US, police are doing these kinds of tests even without laws having been passed.
Drivers who get behind the wheel while high on drugs will face roadside testing and they could be ordered to surrender urine, blood or saliva samples at the police station under a controversial new law that takes effect one week from today.
Drivers who refuse to comply will be subject to a minimum $1,000 fine - the same penalty for refusing the breathalyzer.
Police will be given their new powers to nab drug-impaired drivers after almost five years of intense debate in Parliament.
The law, passed this year after three failed attempts, has been lauded by law enforcement and other groups who say drug-impaired drivers are escaping unpunished at a time when their numbers are climbing.
"Love it," said Gregg Thomson, a father from Kanata, Ont., who predicted yesterday the new testing will deter people from driving under the influence of drugs, just as the breathalyzer test produced a drop in drunk driving.
The new law, however, has sparked warnings about potential court battles from critics who contend demanding bodily fluids is overly intrusive and scientifically unreliable in detecting drug impairment.
"This is going to be challenged left and right," predicted Murray Mollard, executive director of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association.
Beginning next Wednesday, drivers suspected of being high will be required to perform physical tests at the side of the road, such as walking a straight line. If they fail, they will be sent to the police station for further testing by a trained "drug recognition expert" and then be forced to give blood, urine, or saliva samples if they flunk the second test as well.
Critics say while there is a measurable link between blood alcohol levels and driving ability, research is lacking to equate drug quantity and impairment.
Another potential problem in testing bodily fluids is that they can detect marijuana smoked several days or months earlier and the effect has worn off.
"This kind of testing doesn't test for impairment, it tests for past use of a substance and we know with certain substances they stay for a long time," Mollard said.
Federal privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart and the Canadian Bar Association also have raised alarm bells.
Testing is already happening in Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia, but only when the driver voluntarily participates. However, that hardly ever happens because nobody "is going to consent to pee in a bottle" when they are not legally required, said Andy Murie, chief executive officer of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Note: Here in the US, police are doing these kinds of tests even without laws having been passed. ... more -
English Lit exam pits Amy Winehouse against Shakespeare and Raleigh
Cambridge University English literature students said they were surprised to find the troubled singer's work along side the lyrics of Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Raleigh in their final practical criticism exams. Students were asked to do a literary analysis comparing lyrics from Winehouse's 'Back to Black' to Sir Walter Raleigh's 'Love is a Losing Game'.
Amy Winehouse:
"For you I was a flame
Love is a losing game
Five storey fire as you came
Love is a losing game
Why do I wish I never played
Oh, what a mess we made
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game
Played out by the band love is a losing hand . . .
Taken from
Love is a Losing Game"
Sir Walter Raleigh:
"As you came from the holy land
Of Walsinghame,
Met you not with my true love
By the way as you came?
How shall I know your true love,
That have met many one,
As I went to the holy land,
That have come, that have gone?
She is neither white nor brown,
But as the heavens fair;
There is none hath a form so divine In the earth or the air . . .
Taken from
As You Came from the Holy Land"

Drugs like these are being increasingly used as study drugs at colleges everywhere. At UCLA, it seems like almost everyone has tried it or heard about it. Some students casually distribute their pills to friends. In this pod, students share their experiences and a UCLA psychiatrist tells us why the overuse of these drugs is a problem, whether or not they are prescribed by a medical doctor. Big Brother opens door for GINA genetic testing bill
Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) of 2008 is expected to be signed into law by President Bush soon.
GINA will amend laws to prohibit a group health plan from adjusting premium or contribution amounts for a group on the basis of genetic information.
Reluctance to get genetic tests range from being fired, priced out of health insurance or dropped from coverage altogether.
Having been used to diagnose fetal problems for inherited diseases, the scope of testing has expanded in the last decade.
There are now about 1,500 genetic tests.
Washington’s Public Citizen group stated that some people have been misled by inaccurate results, and industry oversight is scant and superficial. As the new law takes effect, testing of the genetic tests also needs to be a priority.
My question: How will Big Brother safeguard the DNA tests? Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) of 2008 is expected to be signed into law by President Bush soon. ... more -

How racist are you? Take the test
Make split second decisions and shoot armed people or holster your weapon wisely in this online test by the University of Chicago that's meant to determine whether you're racist or not, depending on how fast you are to shoot black and white folk.
My results suggest I'm less of a racist and more of a closet trigger-happy gun nut who shouldn't be trusted with a stapler, let alone actual weapons.
Nicholas D. Kristof, a (white) columnist of The New York Times took the test. He discovered this:
"I shot armed blacks in an average of 0.679 seconds, while I waited slightly longer — .694 seconds — to shoot armed whites. Conversely, I holstered my gun more quickly when encountering unarmed whites than unarmed blacks.
Take the test yourself and you’ll probably find that you show bias as well. Most whites and many blacks are more quick to shoot blacks, no matter how egalitarian they profess to be."
Eric L. Hinton of Diversity Inc, who is black, also took the test, and found out the same thing:
"But what concerns me is that, armed or not, I "shot" Black targets faster than I shot white targets. I shot Black armed targets at an average of 0.631 seconds versus white armed targets at 0.662. Even more disturbing - I shot Black unarmed targets at an average of 0.783 seconds versus white unarmed targets at 0.792.
Fractions of seconds? Yes, but still unsettling when you consider the real life implications of armed police officers who make these life and death decisions in real life situations as they encounter Black men on the street." Are you Right Brain or Left Brain?
'The Brain'
This is quite amazing..
If you see this lady turning in clockwise you are using your right brain.
If you see it the other way, you are using left brain.
Some people do see both w ays, b ut most people see it only one way.
See if you can make her go one way and then the other by
shifting the brain's current.
BOTH DIRECTIONS CAN BE SEEN
Experimentation has shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres,
of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking.
The following table illustrates the differences between left-brain and
right-brain thinking:
Left Brain Right Brain
Logical Random
Sequential Intuitive
Rational Holistic
Analytical Synthesizing
Objective Subjective

Most individuals have a distinct preference for one of
these styles of thinking. Some, however, are more
whole-brained and equally adept at both modes.
In general, schools tend t o favo r l eft-brain modes of
thinking, while downplaying the right-brain activities.
Left-brain scholastic subjects focus on logical thinking,
analysis, and accuracy. Right-brained subjects, on the
other hand, focus on aesthetics, feeling, and creativity.
