After 11 consecutive losses and two straight playoff sweeps, the Los Angeles Angels had grown tired of being a bump in Boston's road to the World Series.

"I don't ever want to hear about that streak again. Ever. It's over," center fielder Torii Hunter said Sunday night after the Angels beat the Red Sox 5-4 in 12 innings to force their first-round AL playoff series to a fourth game. "We were trying to get that first win out of the way and then you could see the smiles on people's faces when we got in here."

    • Yankees Finally Close the Book on Embarrassing 2008 Season

In a season with little to celebrate, Mike Mussina's teammates gave him a rousing welcome - one he had waited his entire 18-year career to receive. Mussina had just become the oldest pitcher to win 20 games in a season for the first time as the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 Sunday in the opener of a rain-delayed day-night doubleheader. The A’s are going to have to figure out a way to energize their starting lineup with a little power in the bats that they’re using. • Oakland Athletics: Red Sox rally all game long to embarrass the A’s

Momma said there’d be days like this. That doesn’t make it any easier to swallow though. By the end of the first inning, the A’s would need to score more than five runs to have a chance to win the game, a feat that they’ve accomplished only five games over the past 26, well now 27... • Deadline passes on the A’s, or has it?

So the trade deadline has come and gone and many veteran A’s players have probably taken the time to breathe a long sigh of relief. Even though it would be exciting to be part of a pennant chase elsewhere, many inside the clubhouse still believe that this team can make the playoffs. It’s unknown if Billy Beane really believes that, or Bob Geren for that matter, but as long as the leaders in the clubhouse still believe it, then it must be true... • Legendary Red Sox catcher from 1967 World Series team passes away

It's sad to see one of the old '67 pennant winning Sox players go.
He was a very talented catcher spending 10 years in the minor leagues before making it to the bigs and immediately the World Series.
After a few years with the Red Sox, he did play parts of a few seasons with the Giants.
      He will truly be missed

    • Season-ending surgery for Curt Schilling

The Curt Schilling saga may have come to an end. In his weekly interview on WEEI this morning, the Red Sox right-hander announced he will have surgery on right shoulder, ending his 2008 season and likely his career.

"There's a pretty decent chance that I've thrown my last pitch forever," the 41-year-old righthander said. "I don't want it to end this way, but if this is the way it has to end, I'm OK with that. If it's over and my last pitch was in the 2007 World Series, I'm OK with that. I just can't stress enough where I am mentally with this. I have not a regret in the world.

"None of this makes me bitter or angry. It is what it is. In that sense, honestly, it's very, very easy for me, because of what I've been able to experience compared to what I wanted when I first started my career. But if I have some say in how this is gonna end, I want it to be different than what it is right now."

Jon Lester, who survived cancer to pitch the clincher of Boston's 2007 World Series victory, shut down Kansas City, 7-0, tonight for the first no-hitter in the majors this season.

Lester (3-2) allowed just two baserunners, walking Billy Butler in the second inning and Esteban German to open the ninth. He struck out nine, including Alberto Callaspo to end the game.

The David Ortiz jersey that a construction worker buried under the site of the new Yankee Stadium is a quirky piece of baseball history -- and it sold this afternoon for $175,100 on eBay.

The Yankees, despite being the targets of the would-be curse, donated the jersey to the Jimmy Fund, which auctioned it off to raise funds for cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
