Alien Polar Bear Discovered in Japanese Zoo
Green-colored polar bears are drawing questions from puzzled visitors at a Japanese zoo.
Three normally white polar bears at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in central Japan changed their color in July after swimming in a pond with an overgrowth of algae.
The sight of green polar bears has prompted many questions from visitors concerned about whether the animals are sick or carrying mold, zoo official Masami Kurobe said Sunday.
High temperatures during the months of July and August, and less-frequent water changes because of the zoo's conservation efforts caused an algae growth in the bear pond and safety moat.
The bears are expected to return to their natural color when the algae growth subsides in November, Kurobe said.

Seneca Park Zoo Polar Bear Dies
One of the Seneca Park Zoo's oldest polar bears has died. Yukon, who was 18 years old, passed away in his sleep Sunday, just hours after an examination by the zoo's veterinary staff.
Yukon first appeared ill on Thursday.
Early autopsy results show Yukon had an abdominal cavity infection related to pancreatitis. A more definitive diagnosis is expected in about six weeks. Polar bears can live to be 30 years old, but few live past the age Yukon reached.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Interior classified polar bears as a threatened endangered species. One of the Seneca Park Zoo's oldest polar bears has died. Yukon, who was 18 years old, passed away in his sleep Sunday, just hour... more -

Alaska sues to block polar bear protections
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The state of Alaska sued Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne on Monday, seeking to reverse his decision to list polar bears as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.
Gov. Sarah Palin and other state officials fear a listing will cripple offshore oil and gas development in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas in Alaska's northern waters, which provide prime habitat for the only polar bears under U.S. jurisdiction.
"We believe that the Service's decision to list the polar bear was not based on the best scientific and commercial data available," Palin said in announcing the lawsuit.
Kassie Siegel of the Center for Biological Diversity, the lead author of the petition that led to the listing, said U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service scientists addressed skeptics' objections during the listing process. She called the lawsuit "completely ridiculous and a waste of the court's time."
"This lawsuit and her head-in-the-sand approach to global warming only helps oil companies, certainly not Alaska or the polar bear," Siegel said. "Gov. Palin should be working for sustainable, clean energy development in Alaska instead of extinction for the polar bear."
