Is your cellphone kosher?
Israel's highly traditional Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community is tackling the challenges and opportunities of new communications technologies by offering new religious adaptation to modern technology.
The kosher cellphone is one of the latest results of this trend: it looks like an ordinary cellphone, can make and receive calls, and may have a calculator and alarm clock, but it cannot send or receive text messages, browse the internet or take photos - all activities that could potentially involve behaviour considered "immodest" among Haredis.
For example, SMS capability could lead to the unwitting receipt of mass text messages publicising secular events. It could also be used as a method of illicit communication between male and female teenagers. And all photos of women are forbidden, as is accessing websites with content deemed inappropriate.
The phone's other defining feature is a rabbinical stamp of approval, similar to those seen on kosher food items. All the major Israeli cellphone companies have started providing kosher phones, and even offer cheaper-than-normal packages which only connect with other Haredi numbers. Why Jews should vote for Barack Obama
If you care about the well-being of Jews and Israel, by now the incessant Republican attacks on Barack Obama may have persuaded you to be wary of the Democratic candidate. Parse the poison, however, and you will see that it is nouvelle racism grafted to pure unadulterated right-wing bunk.
This election’s top Swiftboating trick (the Jews for Obama Newsletter calls it “schvitz-boating”) is to make you believe Senator Obama is both a secret Muslim and in the thrall of loudmouthed Christian minister Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Right-wing operatives make snide references to black-Jewish conflicts of the past—Louis Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson’s “Hymietown” statement, the Crown Heights riots—in a transparent attempt to associate Obama—merely because of his race—with hostile African-Americans, and to imply that he sympathizes with the enemies of the Jewish people. Scurrilous emails link Obama to the leader of the Nation of Islam, despite the senator having expressly stated: “I decry racism and anti-Semitism and strongly condemn the anti-Semitic statements made by Minister Farrakhan.”
Slash-and-burn opposition forces—including, shamefully, Senator Joseph Lieberman—want you to believe Barack Obama is “anti-Israel,” when, in fact, his record of support for the Jewish state has been attested to by such “pro-Israel” lawmakers as Senators Carl Levin, Ben Cardin, Russ Feingold, Ron Wyden, Barbara Boxer and Frank Lautenberg, and by no less a conservative voice than the New York Sun. The attackers also hope you’ll swallow their claim that the candidate is soft on Iran, though he has declared emphatically, “I will do everything in my power—everything—to ensure that Iran does not achieve a nuclear weapon.”
Having so often been the target of rumors and disinformation, Jews ought to be suspicious of crazy and loaded accusations. But some in our community—reportedly many senior citizens, and Jews for whom Israel is a political litmus test—have fallen for the smear and scare tactics.
During the summer, as both candidates migrated to the center, I sometimes found it hard to discern their differences on issues like gun control, privacy rights, church-state separation, campaign finance reform and the Middle East, though the divergences that do exist are telling, and their positions on health care, social security and Iraq offer distinct alternatives.
However, the key issue dividing the candidates that has received surprisingly little ink and not enough voter passion is their position on choice. A woman’s right to choose to bear or not have a child, a couple’s freedom to decide when to start or expand a family, and the composition of the Supreme Court for years to come—all hinge on which candidate wins. In this instance, the difference between the two is vast and demanding of serious attention by wavering Democrats, disappointed Hillary-supporters and open-minded Republicans, for the consequences of a McCain victory would be disastrous.

Group offers $50,000 for Jews who move to Alabama town
Larry Blumberg is looking for a few good Jews to move to his corner of the Bible Belt.
Blumberg is chairman of an organization offering Jewish families as much as $50,000 to relocate to Dothan, an overwhelmingly Christian town of 58,000 that calls itself the Peanut Capital of the World. Get involved at Temple Emanu-El and stay at least five years, the group's leaders say, and the money doesn't have to be repaid.

3 Jewish youths beaten by Muslim gang in Paris street
Three Jewish teens were attacked by a group of Muslim African immigrants in Paris on Saturday evening, a French police spokeswoman said yesterday. The Jewish teens, ages 17 and 18, who have been identified as Dan Nebet, Kevin Bitan and David Boaziz, are leaders of the Bnei Akiva youth group in Paris' 19th District.
Thiery Nebet, Dan's father, told Haaretz over the phone that according to what his son had said, as they were walking down the street, "Four or five Arabs of African origin started to throw walnuts at Kevin. When he went up to them to ask them why they did it, they surrounded him and knocked him down. Dan and David moved in and very quickly more Arabs joined in and started to beat the three with their fists and with chains."
The Jewish teens were hospitalized, one with a broken nose and jaw and all three with bruises, and filed a police report after their release. Police opened an investigation and are looking for the Muslim teenagers allegedly responsible for the attacks.

According to the chairman of the Jewish Students Union in France, Raphael Haddad, barrages of stones were thrown at the three teens during the attack. Haddad also said the incident occured on Petit Street in the 19th District, not far from where a 17-year-old Jewish youth was attacked and seriously injured by immigrants on June 21.
The attack is one of a long series of racial attacks in Europe in general and in France in particular. France has Western Europe's largest population of both Jews and Muslims.
The assault was condemned by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and was described by Jewish organizations as an act of anti-Semitism.
The Jewish Agency's envoy in Paris, Rafi Zaush, told Army Radio that attacks in the 19th District are common but most incidents are less violent and therefore not reported by the media. The French ministerial committee to fight racism and anti-Semitism showed concern over the incidents in the 19th District and turned to the mayor, requesting he beef up police presence ahead of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
The French Ministry of the Interior confirmed that the attack was motivated by anti-Semitism, saying the incident ended with relatively little damage.
According to Thiery Nebet a large number of Jews live in the 19th District and, "The atmosphere here is difficult. Now I need to protect our sons so they will not talk a great deal, because that is what we were told by the community's security people. This time it was my son; it can be anyone. The Jews want to live in peace but it's impossible with the Arabs here. We go around with a skullcap and that bothers them, but we don't care. If we have to take off our skullcaps to live better, it's better to leave now."
Benjamin Touati, head of the French desk of World Bnei Akiva, said yesterday: "The situation is very worrisome. One hundred meters from the place of the attack is a Habad school with 1800 female students." Palin's Church: Jews deserve terrorist attacks
Palin’s pastor, Larry Kroon, introduced David Brickner, the executive director of Jews for Jesus on Aug. 17, according to a transcript of the sermon on the church’s website.
“He’s a leader of Jews for Jesus, a ministry that is out on the leading edge in a pressing, demanding area of witnessing and evangelism,” Kroon said. Brickner then explained that Jesus and his disciples were themselves Jewish.
“The Jewish community, in particular, has a difficult time understanding this reality,” he said.
Brickner’s mission has drawn wide criticism from the organized Jewish community, and the Anti-Defamation League accused them in a report of “targeting Jews for conversion with subterfuge and deception.”
Brickner also described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God's "judgment of unbelief" of Jews who haven't embraced Christianity.
Palin was in church that day, Kroon said, though he cautioned against attributing Brickner’s views to her.
The executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council, Ira Forman, cited the “cultural distance” between Palin and almost all American Jews.
“She’s totally out of step with the American Jewish community,” he said. “She is against reproductive freedom – even against abortion in the case of rape and incest. She has said that climate change is not man-made. She has said that she would favor teaching creationism in the schools. These are all way, way, way outside the mainstream.” Palin’s pastor, Larry Kroon, introduced David Brickner, the executive director of Jews for Jesus on Aug. 17, according to a transcript... more -
A attractive Slogan but hidden Motto - Noam Chomsky
Support the Troops
The bewildered herd is a problem. We've got to prevent their roar and trampling. We've got to distract them. They should be watching the Superbowl or sitcoms or violent movies. Every once in a while you call on them to chant meaningless slogans like "Support our troops."
You've got to keep them pretty scared, because unless they're properly scared and frightened of all kinds of devils that are going to destroy them from outside or inside or somewhere, they may start to think, which is very dangerous, because they're not competent to think. Therefore it's important to distract them and marginalize them.

The 'Jewish Hitler': Nazi-descendant lives in Israel as Orthodox Jew
In Jewish circles, the term 'penitents' is sometimes used to describe children of Nazis who become Jews to try to expiate the sins of their fathers. According to this article, a subculture of Nazi-descended Jews exists in Israel, where even a relative of Adolf Hitler himself now lives as an Orthodox Jew.
The Jewish Hitler-relative, who wishes to remain anonymous, works as a professor at the Jewish studies faculty at one of the universities in Israel. He is a descendant of Hitler's half-brother, Alois Junior, but stresses that he does not have any blood or DNA from the Hitler branch of his family. According to him, his mother severed all connections with the Hitlers and was beaten for refusing to go to Hitler Youth events as a teenager. His father, on the other hand, was a major in the Wehrmacht and therefore, barring a miracle, killed people for Hitler.

Anti-Semitic incidents rise 9% in UK
There was a 9% rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the UK in the first half of 2008 compared with the same period last year, the Community Security Trust (CST) reported.
There were 266 incidents up to June, compared with 244 last year. Some 166 were incidents of abusive behaviour, including verbal abuse, hate mail and anti-Semitic graffiti. Worryingly, incidents involving Jewish students or academics and at colleges rose 88%, from 26 to 49. There were also 29 incidents affecting Jewish schools and schoolchildren. Violent assaults were down, from 54 in the first six months of 2007, to 42.
Outside the biggest Jewish communities in London and Manchester, CST recorded 98 incidents in 38 different areas. "This is partly explained by efforts made by CST to improve contact with smaller Jewish communities beyond the main urban centres, and goes some way to explaining the overall rise in incidents," the charity said.
John Mann MP, chair of the parliamentary group against anti-Semitism, said the report reflected improved reporting of incidents involving students and smaller communities.
"By knowing the scale of the problem we can deploy strategies to combat anti-Semitism from our streets and our campuses," he said. "Every anti-Semitic attack is a blight on society." Nazi hunters one step closer to finding 'Dr Death'
PUERTO MONTT, Chile (AFP) - Nazi hunters said Thursday they were closer to tracking down Aribert Heim, the infamous sadistic "Doctor Death," after finding one of his daughters and what they called "credible" information.
"We have hard facts, which are credible, but have to be checked," Sergio Widder, Latin America director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told AFP. "Those who spoke to us did so in good faith, without trying to twist the information."
An Austrian doctor, Heim is wanted for killing hundreds of concentration camp victims with his horrific medical experiments, including performing operations without anesthesia and injecting gasoline directly into their hearts.
Widder said dozens of people had come forward with information on Heim, which led the Center's investigators to this town, some 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of the Chilean capital of Santiago.
All those who offered details on Heim, who would now be 94, were interviewed by Efraim Zuroff, a historian considered the best "Nazi hunter" in the world. Zuroff also is the director of the Israel office of the Wiesenthal Center.
"All the information we have points to Heim living in this area. Somewhere between Puerto Montt and Bariloche" in Argentina, Zuroff told reporters Thursday.
"We think there must be someone here who may have the key to finding Heim. There is a 500,000 (315,000 euro) dollar reward for that person, provided by Heim's victims," he said.
Zuroff said no matter how old Heim was, he had to be held accountable for his crimes.
"He castrated people, he used parts of their body to decorate his office. I'm not giving out these details to emotionalize the issue, but for people to understand how important it is to catch this criminal," Zuroff said.
The Wiesenthal delegation said they had found Heim's daughter Waltraut Boser in Puerto Montt, but had not contacted her. Now aged 60, Boser is believed to be married to a local businessman and to have lived in Chile some 30 years.
During that time, she has traveled to Europe roughly 50 times, and in the last two years visited the Bariloche area in neighboring Argentina about a dozen times. Several Nazi criminals have found refuge in Argentina.

Muslims feel much like the 'Jews of Europe'
Britain's first Muslim minister has attacked the growing culture of hostility against Muslims in the United Kingdom, saying that many feel targeted like "the Jews of Europe".
Shahid Malik, who was appointed as a minister in the Department for International Development (Dfid) by Gordon Brown last summer, said it has become legitimate to target Muslims in the media and society at large in a way that would be unacceptable for any other minority.
Mr Malik made clear that he was not equating the situation with the Holocaust but warned that many British Muslims now felt like "aliens in their own country". He said he himself had been the target of a string of racist incidents, including the firebombing of his family car and an attempt to run him down at a petrol station.
"I think most people would agree that if you ask Muslims today what do they feel like, they feel like the Jews of Europe," he said. "I don't mean to equate that with the Holocaust but in the way that it was legitimate almost – and still is in some parts – to target Jews, many Muslims would say that we feel the exact same way.
"Somehow there's a message out there that it's OK to target people as long as it's Muslims. And you don't have to worry about the facts, and people will turn a blind eye."
The claims are made in an interview to be broadcast on Monday in a Channel 4 Dispatches programme to coincide with the third anniversary of the London bombings of 7 July....
