That was a freelance gig; her main job is appearing at Weeki Wachee Springs, a beloved tourist attraction in a nearby town, where she performs as a mermaid, swimming underwater in a 15-pound glittery tail alongside manatees, turtles and fish in a freshwater stream. At Weeki Wachee, she usually plays the role of the heroine Ariel in a production of ?The Little Mermaid,? which was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale."

Biking to a Different Beat
A new biker gang is roaming the streets of Richmond Hill, Queens. This crew of mostly teenagers can be seen riding along 103rd Avenue just west of the Van Wyck Expressway. The bikes roar, but the booming sound has nothing to do with engines because there are no engines. They are ordinary bicycles, not motorcycles, although these contraptions look and sound more like rolling D.J. booths. They are outfitted with elaborate stereo systems installed by the youths. Nine months after 9/11, Hasan Elahi, an art professor at Rutgers University, was detained at the Detroit airport after the F.B.I. received a bogus tip that he had stockpiled explosives in a storage locker. Six months of interrogations and nine polygraph tests later, the F.B.I. let him go. (The F.B.I. declined to comment.) But Elahi wasn?t ready to let go of the F.B.I. In a sly swipe at the surveillance system that botched his case, Elahi has self-consciously, if a bit ostentatiously, surrendered his privacy via a personal Web site. He has an alibi now ? a perpetual one.

Craigslist Vengeance
Nichole Marie Blackwell, 28, posted an ad on Craigslist in March inviting users to come to the Tacoma, Wash., home of her aunt Laurie Raye and take what you want. Everything is free. Please help yourself to anything on the property. According to Jim Buckmaster, C.E.O. of Craigslist, the ad was up for less than two hours before users flagged it as false. But that was plenty of time for carloads of Craigslisters to arrive at Rayes unlocked house, from which Blackwells mother had recently been evicted, and haul off pretty much everything, down to the front door and the baseboards and the kitchen sink.
