Harvard reclaims no. 1 spot in U.S college rankings
It's the country's oldest and wealthiest college. It's also the most selective college. Harvard comes in at no.1 in the U.S News and World college report for the first time in 12 years. Other universities made it on the list. Princeton ranked at no. 2 and Yale at no. 3. Stanford and MIT are tied for 4th. UC Berkeley had the highest ranking at no. 21. Anthrax suspect obsessed with Kappas
Seems like the girls of the Princeton chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma have more to worry about these days than their Visa Visa Mastercards (is that a universal nickname or just in the South?). Bruce Ivins, the top suspect in the 2001 anthrax case who apparently committed suicide last week, was reportedly obsessed with the sorority and chose to mail his toxin-laced letters from the mailbox 100 yards from their house. Prosecutors were set to indict Ivins and were planning to ask for the death penalty in the case over the 2001 attacks that killed 5. His attorneys said he would have been proven innocent in court. Slashdot | Hard Evidence of Voting Machine Addition Errors
Princeton Professor, Ed Felton, has posted a series of blog entries in which he shows the printed tapes he obtained from the NJ voting machines don't report the ballots correctly. In response to the first one, Sequoia admitted that the machines had a known software design error that did not correctly record which kind of ballots were cast (republican or democratic primary ballots) but insisted the vote totals were correct. Then, further tapes showed this explanation to be insufficient. In response, State officials insisted that the (poorly printed) tapes were misread by Felton. Again further tapes showed this not to be a sufficient explanation. However all those did not foreclose the optimistic assessment that the errors were benign — that is, the possibility that vote totals might really be correct even though the ballot totals were wrong and the origin of the errors had not been explained. Now he has found (well-printed) tapes that show what appears to be hard proof that it's the vote totals that are wrong, since two different readout methods don't agree. Sequoia has made trade-secret legal threats against those wishing to mount an independent examination of the equipment. One small hat-tip to Sequoia: at least they are reporting enough raw data in different formats that these kinds of errors can come to light — that lesson should be kept in mind when writing future requirements for voting machines. Ruby Suns and Le Loup at The ECHO
Nestled into the hip city streets of Echo Park is the Echo and on the Saturday night it was the place to be. Opening up the gig was Princeton - a wholesome indie group whose singers may well have been twins and whose ages were only evident by the matching beers in their little hands. Their music was sweet and as they sang together one couldn't help but sway along. But we were there for two reasons and two reasons alone: The Ruby Suns and Le Loup.
The Ruby Suns are a pop "Healing & Easy Listening" group from New Zealand and this crazy quartet could definitely have healing powers for I was ready to fall asleep before they came on but then- as if by Kiwi magic their music had me up and dancing within seconds. The band released their self-titled debut in 2005 on Sub Pop Records and their second album 'The Sea Lion' is out now so be sure to check it out!
Next up was Le Loup (pictured above) - the progressive-indie band from Washington D.C. The band is on Hardly Art (the label formed by Sub Pop founder Jonathan Poneman). Their debut album 'Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millenium General Assembly' is available on amazon, subpop, insound and hardly art. These "children of the internet age" met via a craigslist posting by founder Sam Simkoff who was looking for bandmates and found six incredible ones. Their music already has people talking and after Saturday's show - I only have good things to say.

Princeton Professor vs. Voting Machine Co.
I video chatted yesterday with Princeton professor Edward Felten. After he was alerted to strange vote tallies by Sequoia voting machines on Super Tuesday, Sequoia wrote to tell Felton that if he investigated the malfunction, even at the request of county clerks, it may be grounds for a lawsuit against him.
