Intravenous milk thistle compound used to save victims of poisonous mushrooms
A family of 6 in California became the first recipients in the United States of an intravenous milk thistle (Silybum marianum, Asteraceae) fruit (seed) extract to treat mushroom poisoning in January of 2007. The US Food and Drug Administration permitted emergency use of the drug Legalon Sil® (Madaus Pharma, Brussels; div. of Madaus AG, Cologne, Germany) for the patients, and 5 of the victims survived the poisoning.
Legalon extract, the world’s first pharmaceutical-grade milk thistle extract, is made from the fruits (often called seeds) of milk thistle, standardized to 80% flavonolignans (silibinin [silybin], silydianin, and silychristin). Numerous published animal studies and human clinical trials have shown that milk thistle extract is safe, has antioxidant properties, assists in regeneration of RNA (ribonucleic acid) in the liver to create new hepatocytes, and eliminates toxins from the liver. The leaves of milk thistle, native to the Mediterranean area, have been used both as an edible plant and as a liver remedy in traditional medicine since Greco-Roman times.

Bolivia region 'chooses autonomy'
After being electing the country's first indigenous president, Evo Morales started trying to make good on his promises of a more equitable distribution of the nation's resources, only to be harassed at every turn.
This autonomy vote wby the wealthiest district was just the latest and most blatant affront of a privileged class lashing out now that they are no longer in control. Doesn't democracy suck when it doesn't favor the upper classes.
Morales needs to make sure that Santa Cruz gets no special treatment and that this vote is a dead letter of a bygone oligarchy. After being electing the country's first indigenous president, Evo Morales started trying to make good on his promises of a more ... more -
Judge halts aerial spraying against moth in Santa Cruz County
And this is why I love the bay area, once in awhile you feel like sanity might prevail after all. For anyone who hasn't been following this, the last time they sprayed, over 600 people reported feeling ill.
(04-24) 13:05 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A judge today ordered aerial spraying in Santa Cruz County against the light brown apple moth be halted until the state conducts a comprehensive environmental review of the impacts.
It was not immediately clear how Burdick's ruling would affect plans to spray in the Bay Area or in Monterey. Environmentalists have filed a similar suit in Monterey County Superior Court.
Critics of the spraying have voiced strong opposition to the aerial spraying plan after hundreds of residents in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties reported respiratory problems last autumn that they contend were linked to the first round of spraying against the light brown apple moth.
A 32-page report that state health officials released earlier this month said they were unable to determine a link between the spraying and respiratory problems, saying the complaints were not detailed enough or consistent. And this is why I love the bay area, once in awhile you feel like sanity might prevail after all. For anyone who hasn't been foll... more -
