Obama talks about late term abortions
from The Huffington Post
....... Barack Obama says "mental distress" should not qualify as a justification for late-term abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights.
In an interview this week with "Relevant," a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain "a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother."
Obama then added: "Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term."
Last year, after the Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on late-term abortions, Obama said he "strongly disagreed" with the ruling because it "dramatically departs form previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women." from The Huffington Post ... more -

Barack Obama heads to Europe
Barack Obama seems to be the darling of American politics abroad (at least, McCain doesn't have Germans yelling his slogan at their party meetings). But what does Obama really mean for Europe, and vice versa? Obama must be wary not to seem "too European" but also show a vested interest in the region. Will be interesting to see how his upcoming trip will pan out. Barack Obama: My Position On FISA
Senator Obama explains why he is supporting the FISA compromise.
"...I also believe that the compromise bill is far better than the Protect America Act that I voted against last year. The exclusivity provision makes it clear to any president or telecommunications company that no law supersedes the authority of the FISA court. In a dangerous world, government must have the authority to collect the intelligence we need to protect the American people. But in a free society, that authority cannot be unlimited."
"Democracy cannot exist without strong differences. And going forward, some of you may decide that my FISA position is a deal breaker. That's ok. But I think it is worth pointing out that our agreement on the vast majority of issues that matter outweighs the differences we may have. After all, the choice in this election could not be clearer. Whether it is the economy, foreign policy, or the Supreme Court, my opponent has embraced the failed course of the last eight years, while I want to take this country in a new direction. Make no mistake: if John McCain is elected, the fundamental direction of this country that we love will not change."

McCain's temper strikes again and leaves him speechless (video)
John McCain has been the subject for many years of questions about his "uncontrollable" temper, with even fellow Republican Sen. Thad Cochran suggesting it makes him unfit to be president.
A touch of the McCain temper was on display Tuesday, when a reporter asked him, "In what ways did your experience in Vietnam prepare you for the presidency?" and McCain brusquely replied, "oh, please," and turned away.
In commenting on that reaction, Sen. Cochran told a Mississippi newspaper about an incident in 1987 where McCain grabbed a Nicaraguan envoy "by the shirt collar" during negotiations "and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair" -- a story McCain said was "simply not true."
MSNBC's Dan Abrams asked his guests on Wednesday, "How big a deal is this for John McCain?"
White House correspondent April Ryan agreed that, "it's a big deal. ... America wants to know that their president can handle tough situations ... with an even hand and an even mind."
However, MSNBC's Turker Carlson found the whole topic ridiculous. "You've got to be kidding!" he laughed. "Knock it off! That's the dumbest thing I've heard in so long! ... I hope he grabbed that Sandinista official by the face and ground it into the desk. They were monsters! ... I think America wants a president with some backbone!"
"He's running for president of the United States, not Miss Manners," Huffington Post editor Roy Sekoff chimed in. "I mean, suddenly he's going to be disqualified because he gets a little hot under the collar and has a potty mouth?"
"I'm not talking about a potty mouth," retorted Ryan. "I'm talking about someone who will blow a fuse. Do you want that sucker? Hey, have it if you want it."
"I've never seen him blow any fuses," insisted Carlson.
"It's ludicrous," Sekoff agreed.
Dan Abrams then brought up Cindy McCain's lavish spending habits, with recent disclosures showing her running up hundreds of thousands of dollars on her charge cards in a month.
Ryan suggested that the story made McCain look bad at "a time when people are holding their pocketbooks and looking at the possible leader of the free world to make sure they understand their pain."
In this case, Sekoff agreed, saying, "The hypocrisy ... comes when Karl Rove tries to paint Barack Obama as a country club elitist. ... Cindy McCain is the real deal. ... This is not going to go over well with the American people."
This video is from MSNBC's Verdict, broadcast July 2, 2008.

McCain Confuses Sudan and Somolia
John McCain misspoke and confused his African countries while talking to reporters on the Straight Talk Express today. This time, he was bailed out not by Joe Lieberman, but by his close aide Mark Salter. “How can we bring pressure on the government of Somalia?” McCain asked, which prompted Mark Salter to correct him. “Sudan,” Salter said. “Sudan,” McCain repeated. “There’s a realpolitik side of my view of the conduct of American foreign policy.”

McCain's MIlitary Service Makes Him fit for "Commander-in-Chief"

Lawsuit Filed To Carry Weapons In Atlanta Airport
ATLANTA — The nation's busiest airport dueled with gun rights advocates Tuesday over whether a new Georgia state law allows visitors to carry firearms at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
City officials in charge of the airport declared it a "gun-free zone" when a law allowing people to carry guns on public transit and other places took effect Tuesday. Gun rights supporters, including a state legislator who helped pass the law, quickly filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the designation. Obama: Nader's just trying to get attention
Responding to Ralph Nader's comments that Barack Obama is "talking white" and trying to appeal to "white guilt," Obama said it's a shame people may forget about the famed consumer advocate's contributions to society.
"Ralph Nader is just trying to get attention," Obama said. "Ralph Nader is someone whose campaign ... hasn't gotten any traction."
Nader, who in February started his fourth run for president, is credited with helping popularise auto seatbelts and airbags, and for standing up for consumers against corporations for decades, initially through his group Public Citizen. He was instrumental in the founding of government agencies that protect citizens from corporate environmental pollution and workers from unsafe working conditions. He gained repute with the publication in 1965 of his book "Unsafe at Any Speed," which detailed safety defects in American cars.
In an interview published today, Nader criticised Obama for not speaking out on payday loans and predatory lending, lead poisoning and asbestos. He wondered if Obama won't take up those issues and cry out about the plight of the inner cities because he doesn't want to sound like Jesse Jackson.

Obama NOt what you think?
This is a candidate who says he’s going to usher in change; that he is a different kind of politician who has the skills to get things done. He reminds us again and again that he had the foresight to oppose the war in Iraq. And he seems to have a genuine interest in lifting up the poor.
But his record suggests that he is incapable of ushering in any kind of change I’d like to see. It is one of accommodation and concession to the very political powers that we need to rein in and oppose if we are to make truly lasting advances. Obama, Clinton Join Together in Show of Unity
Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton showered each other with praise yesterday in their first joint appearance since the end of the Democratic presidential primary season at an event in which the senator from New York urged hundreds of her top donors to get behind the party's presumptive nominee.
Clinton spoke first at the event at a Washington hotel, telling her disappointed supporters that Democrats "are a family, and we have an opportunity now to really demonstrate clearly we do know what's at stake, and we will do whatever it takes to win back this White House."
Obama hailed his former rival and her backers. "I recognize that this room shared the same passion that a roomful of my supporters would show. I do not expect that passion to be transferred. Senator Clinton is unique, and your relationships with her are unique." But he added: "Senator Clinton and I at our core agree deeply that this country needs to change."
He also sought to lead the move to unite by example, announcing that he had personally written a check for $2,300, the maximum he can give, to help retire Clinton's more than $20 million in campaign debt and that he had urged his biggest supporters to follow suit. The announcement drew a standing ovation. More than 200 Clinton fundraisers were on hand for the emotional event. Clinton supporter Terence R. McAuliffe, who emceed the event, said that the people in the sparse conference room had helped to bring in $230 million for her campaign.
Obama faced some tough questions during the event, designed to help put 18 months of hard feelings aside and allow Democrats to focus on a general-election campaign against Republican Sen. John McCain. At one point, an attendee told Obama that if he wanted to be seen as a true leader, he needed acknowledge that sexism had played a role in the demise of Clinton's campaign. Obama agreed and said that the issue should be addressed.

The senator from Illinois also worked to assure the assembled fundraisers and donors that the campaign is not taking them for granted as his campaign prepared to try to raise more money than any presidential candidate has in history.
"He said, 'Look, if any of you have been feeling that all we want from you is your fundraising ability, I want to cancel those feelings right now,' " said Mark Aronchick, a Clinton fundraiser in Pennsylvania who attended the event. " 'Put them aside. In fact, I want your networks, your influence in your communities, the opinions you have.' From my point of view, he couldn't have said anything more important."
The event, held at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, was a long-awaited step toward bringing the two sides together after the hardest-fought primary campaign in recent history. Obama and Clinton will travel to the town of Unity, N.H. -- which gave each candidate 107 votes in its January primary -- this morning for their first public appearance together. Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton showered each other with praise yesterday in their first joint appearance since the end ... more
