    • Video Shows Bystandars Ignoring Hit and Run Victim

A 78-year-old man is tossed like a rag doll by a hit-and-run driver and lies motionless on a busy city street as car after car goes by. Pedestrians gawk but appear to do nothing. One driver stops briefly but then pulls back into traffic. A man on a scooter slowly circles the victim before zipping away.

The chilling scene - captured on video by a streetlight surveillance camera - has touched off a round of soul-searching in Hartford, with the capital city's biggest newspaper blaring "SO INHUMANE" on the front page and the police chief lamenting: "We no longer have a moral compass."

"We have no regard for each other," said Chief Daryl Roberts, who on Wednesday released the video in hopes of making an arrest in the accident that left Angel Arce Torres in critical condition.

However, Roberts and other city officials backtracked on Thursday. After initially saying he was unsure whether anyone called 911, he and other city officials appeared at a news conference in which they said that four people dialed 911 within a minute of the accident, and that Torres received medical attention shortly after that.

"This moved too quickly," said Calixto Torres, City Council president. "People were putting information out too quickly."

Roberts said his initial angry reaction was based on what he saw in the video. "The video was very graphic and sent a very bad message," the police chief said.

The hit-and-run took place in daylight last Friday at about 5:45 p.m. in a working-class neighborhood close to downtown in this city of 125,000.

In the video, Torres, a retired fork-lift operator, walks in the two-way street just blocks from the state Capitol after buying milk at a grocery. A tan Toyota (nyse: TM - news - people ) and a dark Honda (nyse: HMC - news - people ) that is apparently chasing it veer across the center line, and Torres is struck by the Honda. Both cars then dart down a side street.

Nine cars pass Torres as a few people stare from the sidewalk. Some approach Torres, but most stay put until a police cruiser responding to an unrelated call arrives on the scene after about a minute and a half.

"Like a dog they left him there," said a disgusted Jose Cordero, 37, who was with friends Thursday not far from where Torres was struck. Robert Luna, who works at a store nearby, said: "Nobody did nothing."

One witness, Bryant Hayre, told the Courant he didn't feel comfortable helping Torres, who he said was bleeding and conscious.

The accident - and bystanders' apparent callousness - dominated morning radio talk shows.

"It was one of the most despicable things I've seen by one human being to another," the Rev. Henry Brown, a community activist, said in an interview. "I don't understand the mind-set anymore. It's kind of mind-boggling. We're supposed to help each other. You see somebody fall, you want to offer a helping hand."

The victim's son, Angel Arce, begged the public for help in finding the driver. "My father is fighting for his life," he said.

The hit-and-run is the second violent crime to shock Hartford this week. On Monday, former Deputy Mayor Nicholas Carbone, 71, was beaten and robbed while walking to breakfast. He remains hospitalized and faces brain surgery.

"There was a time they would have helped that man across the street. Now they mug and assault him," police chief said. "Anything goes."

    • Amazing skydiving advert airs live on TV

16 skydivers, loads of cameras, a shedload of money and a live airing on TV makes for one *very* cool advert.

This aired on Channel 4 last night and even disregarding the fact that it happened in real time, it's still incredible to watch.

And oddly reminiscent to me of the skydiving in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I really need to start living my life again.

    • Honda Sells Its 60 Millionth - Yes, Millionth - Super Cub

The venerable Honda Super Cub motorcycle is the best-selling vehicle in the history of internal combustion, and there are now more than 60 million of them on the road. That's an amazing figure that speaks to the strength of a 49 cc motorcycle Soichiro Honda designed 50 years ago, helping spur Japan's eventual rise to dominance in the motorcycle industry.

The Cub was a turning point in the history of motorcycles because it took them from the hands of The Wild Bunch and gave them to suburbanites with ads promising "You meet the nicest people on a Honda." It brought motorcycles into the mainstream, and made personal transportation affordable to people around the world. Sometime last month, Honda says, the 60 millionth Honda Super Cub rolled off an assembly line.

The Cub isn't very fast and it isn't very pretty, but it's everything you need in basic transportation - cheap, efficient and damn near indestructible. It'll take as much abuse as you can throw at it and, like Max Mosely, come back for more. You can even toss it off a building and it'll start right up.

      See for yourself...

    • Honda robot conducts Detroit Symphony

DETROIT - The lights dimmed, the sold-out hall grew hushed and out walked the conductor — shiny, white and 4 feet, 3 inches tall.

ASIMO, a robot designed by Honda Motor Co., met its latest challenge Tuesday evening: Conducting the Detroit Symphony in a performance of "The Impossible Dream" from "Man of La Mancha."

"Hello, everyone," ASIMO said to the audience in a childlike voice, then waved to the orchestra.

As it conducted, it perfectly mimicked the actions of a conductor, nodding its head at various sections and gesturing with one or both hands. ASIMO took a final bow to enthusiastic shouts from the audience.

"It is absolutely thrilling to perform with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. This is a magnificent concert hall," ASIMO said.

Later, cellist Yo-Yo Ma joined ASIMO onstage to receive an award for his efforts in music education. Ma bent to ASIMO's height and shook the robot's hand. Ma performed later on the program but didn't take questions from the media about ASIMO.

Honda spokeswoman Alicia Jones said it was the first time ASIMO has conducted an orchestra, and it may be the first time any robot has conducted a live performance. ASIMO stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility.

ASIMO has its limits. ASIMO's engineers programmed the robot to mimic Charles Burke, the Detroit Symphony's education director, as he conducted the piece in front of a pianist about six months ago. But it can't respond to the musicians.

During the first rehearsal, the orchestra lost its place when ASIMO began to slow the tempo, something a human conductor would have sensed and corrected, said bassist Larry Hutchinson.

"It's not a communicative device. It simply is programmed to do a sense of gestures," said Leonard Slatkin, the orchestra's musical director. "If the orchestra decides to go faster, there's nothing the robot can do about it. Hopefully, I keep that under control."

But several musicians also said ASIMO was more realistic than they expected.

"The movements are still a little stiff, but very humanlike, much more fluid than I thought," Hutchinson said.

Honda has been developing walking robots since 1986. The latest version of ASIMO debuted last year. Honda eventually intends its robots to be companions for the elderly and others in need, such as schoolchildren navigating crosswalks. ASIMO can run, walk on uneven slopes and respond to simple voice commands. It can also recognize faces with its camera eyes.

Honda brought the robot to Detroit to highlight its recent $1 million gift to the orchestra for a music education fund.

    • Honda to sell cheaper Hybrid in 2009

Washington DC May 21, 2008; The AIADA newsletter reported that Honda Motor Co. announced today that it will launch a new, affordable gas-electric hybrid car in the U.S., Japan, and Europe in early 2009.

The vehicle will be one of four new hybrid models the car maker plans to release by 2015 to challenge Toyota's dominance in the green car market. These new vehicle launches, which will include a hybrid version of the Fit, highlight Honda's aggressive new push to reclaim its role as a leader in green car technology.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Honda now has an ambitious goal to sell 500,000 hybrids per year sometime after 2010. The vehicle - which is still unnamed - will be sold only as a hybrid, as is the Toyota Prius.

Honda expects to sell about 200,000 of the new vehicles annually, half of those in the U.S. market. The car is based on the design of the FCX Clarity, the fuel-cell vehicle.

Honda President Takeo Fukui said it would be affordable and that weight reduction, more compact components, and new technologies will help increase fuel efficiency.

    • Honda Solar Powered Hydrogen refueling station

Pictures of the refueling station of the GREEN FUTURE.

Leave it to Honda, when American Car companies can't get their act together.

I did everything in my power to buy American for years. Finally one day I said enough is enough and I went out and got a HONDA.

Three years later. Three new ACCORDS later.

I am sold on the company.

Not one service visit. Not one problem. Great gas mileage and the 4 cylinders will flat out GO.

Will be buying another one and that is saying a great deal coming from me.

Would I rather buy a CHEVY, SATURN, FORD, YOU BET.

BE REAL HARD NOW TO BRING ME BACK unless it was a TRUCK.

A Hydrogen fuel cell TRUCK maybe.

I am very big on boycotting energy companies, and all big caps who seek to control this Country. I don't see that with some of these excellent international companies and so they will get my support and my consumer consideration.

WHAT WENT WRONG WITH BIG CAP IN THIS COUNTRY? GREED.

    • Robot umanoide direttore d'orchestra

In an unforeseen power play Honda thermodynamicists and controls engineers bested their rival elecrical engineers with a textbook solution.

      Reality:
Using a setup to use heat to power a Rankine cycle, they reported "that the use of the Rankine cycle improved the thermal efficiency of the engine by 3.8%."
Unfortunately with the cost and weight of the system I hardly think 3.8% warrants significant pause other than to commend these engineers with a well intentioned try at making the world a better place

    • Honda's FCX's Only Emission Is Water

This summer Honda will share limited retail marketing of its Hydrogen Fuel Cell car which "...utilizes Honda's V Flow stack in combination with a new compact and efficient lithium ion battery pack and a single hydrogen storage tank to power the vehicle's electric drive motor. The fuel cell stack operates as the vehicle's main power source. Hydrogen combines with atmospheric oxygen in the fuel cell stack, where chemical energy from the reaction is converted into electric power used to propel the vehicle. Additional energy captured through regenerative braking and deceleration is stored in the lithium ion battery pack, and used to supplement power from the fuel cell, when needed. The vehicle's only emission is water. "

In fact, the only blemish listed is that one of the dashboard lights doesn't work, and that's only sometimes. There's high mileage, and then there's this.
