'Speeding driver' killed boy, 3, and drove on
A speeding motorist ran over a three-year-old boy playing in the road and carried on his journey without stopping, a jury has been told.
Darren Jenkins, 25, denies causing the death of Joshua Venn-Howells by dangerous driving in the St Mellons area of Cardiff in July last year. Mr Jenkins told police he was aware he had hit something but did not know what, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
Joshua was injured in the crash and died in hospital the following day.
Tom Crowther, prosecuting , said it was their case that Joshua was "clearly visible" as the driver of the car behind Mr Jenkins, of Roath, Cardiff, had been able to see him in the middle of the road.
He told the jury they would hear evidence that Mr Jenkins was speeding at the time of the collision which happened in a 30mph zone on Willowbrook Road on 27 July. The court heard it was "a massive failure of responsibility" of Mr Jenkins as a qualified driver which led to the death of Joshua, the second youngest of six children.

Chinese drivers using James Bond cars to get away
Speeding drivers in south China are getting clear away thanks to machines which switch the numbers on their licence plates in seconds, state media said on Tuesday.
"More than 50 percent of cars caught on camera for speeding and other offences either cover up their plates or use a fake licence plate," a traffic policeman in the Guangdong city of Yangjiang was quoted by the Beijing Youth Daily as saying.
"Our chances of capturing them is next to nil."
The price of the remote-control device starts at around 800 yuan ($115), while a more advanced apparatus with the ability to flip over the numbers in less than three seconds costs more than double.
In April, Xinhua news agency reported that China had confiscated thousands of fake military vehicles and number plates in a move to crack down on citizens masquerading as privileged members of the People's Liberation Army.
In years past, Chinese counterfeiters have used fake military vehicles to ship bootleg cigarettes and other goods, previous reports have said. Speeding drivers in south China are getting clear away thanks to machines which switch the numbers on their licence plates in seconds,... more -

Amir Khan't Drive Anymore
Commonwealth lightweight title-holder Amir Khan has been banned from driving after being caught driving his BMW 6 Series at speeds in excess of 140mph.
The speed freak received a £1000 fine as well as a 42 day ban, after cops, somewhat implausibly, caught him driving 'off the clock' at 155mph.
District Judge Pamela Baldwin sentenced British boxer Khan, even though there was a lack of evidence of him driving over 100mph, she said although this was the case she could be certain he had been driving over the legal limit of 70mph. Points don't always mean prizes...
British ministers are in talks about changing fixed penalties for speeding motorists, which would see the penalties being directly linked to how much over the limit drivers were. Get caught doing over 45mph in a 30mph zone and you'd be apprehended with a 6 point penalty on your license, complimented by 6 points, double the existing legislation.
Receiving 12 points over 3 years would still see the automatic 6 month ban being upheld, although under these suggested proposals the amount of time it may take for repeated offenders to notch up 12 points could be much sooner.
