    • Gay online soap opera has a serious message

From its opening scene, the online soap opera "In the Moment" pulls no punches -- because, its creators say, it cannot. The show, which has drawn tens of thousands of viewers in the last few months, is a racy, unvarnished portrait of gay L.A.

It is also, at its core, about HIV and AIDS.

Recent years have brought a wave of new programs designed to reinvigorate outreach in the gay community, as well as a dialogue about men's sexuality.

There are colorful trucks that take rapid-response HIV testing to the streets. Government-funded "POLs" -- popular opinion leaders -- scour the town for other socially influential gay men and women, give them risk-reduction training and send them back into the community to spread the word. There's even a proposal to design jeans with built-in "condom pockets" to promote the idea that condom use should be a routine part of gay culture, not an afterthought.

    • $125,000 donation to ban gay marriage in California brings boycott for hotel owner

When Doug Manchester, owner of the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel in San Diego, donated $125,000 to support Proposition 8, an amendment to ban same-sex marriage on the November ballot, he probably didn't think it would impact the bottom line of his business.

A gay rights group called Californians Against Hate plans to launch a boycott of Manchester's hotels. Organizers of the campaign, which is expected to be announced at a news conference today, say they believe it is the first time that gay rights supporters have boycotted a business whose owner seeks to ban same-sex marriage.

Leaders will urge the public to avoid the downtown hotel because they say that support for Proposition 8 amounts to unfair treatment of gays and lesbians.

In an interview earlier this year, Manchester said that he decided to donate to Proposition 8 because he had heard that schools that teach that marriage is between a man and a woman could be sued for discriminating against gays.

In addition, he said, he was motivated by his strong Catholic faith to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.

    • 'Pregnant man' Thomas Beatie gives birth to baby girl

Thomas Beatie, 34, told People magazine that he had given birth at a hospital in Bend, Oregon on Sunday. “The only thing different about me is that I can’t breastfeed my baby. But a lot of mothers don’t,” he said, adding that he planned to publish a book about the experience this autumn.

The bearded Mr Beatie was born a girl and named Tracy Lagondino, but had gender-reassignment surgery and is now legally male and married to Nancy. The couple, together for ten years, run a custom screenprinting business in Bend.

He decided to get pregnant because his wife had had a hysterectomy. He was able to conceive because he kept his female organs when he switched genders.

    • NY Includes Transgender Kids in New Juvie Policy

A year and a half after paying a $25,000 settlement to a male-to-female transgirl, the agency that runs the New York's juvenile-detention centers has quietly adopted a host of new rules to accommodate lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth in its custody.

The new rules, adopted in March by the Office of Children and Family Services, now allow transgender youth to request special housing, wear their hair however they want, be called by their chosen name rather than their legal name, and shower privately. The new guidelines even allow biological males to wear girls' panties and bras if they prefer. The agency has also included transgender kids in its anti-discrimination policy—a first for any New York state agency, according to OCFS spokesman Edward Borges.

It is with a certain fear and loathing that New Yorkers think of Los Angeles. Seared into the Gotham psyche 31 years ago: Woody Allen’s Alvy Singer following Diane Keaton’s Annie Hall to La-La land—stop and go, stop and go, in a car; a house party full of phonies on the make; and then, thankfully, back East on a plane. We’re the careful pioneers; they’re nuts. But more Manhattan and Brooklyn residents this decade have relocated to L.A. than vice versa, according to an Observer analysis of I.R.S. data. • Colin Farrell best man at brother's gay wedding

From AfterElton.com: "Alright, this is really sweet: actor Colin Farrell (who played bisexual in A Home at the End of the World, gay-ish in Alexander, and was "discovered" by Joel Schumacher, make of that what you will) will be playing the role of Best Man when his brother, dance teacher Eamon Farrell, weds his boyfriend Steven Mannion. The brothers (Eamon is the elder) are apparently quite close and Colin reportedly helped his big bro pick out the wedding ring."

OK. But seriously. The real story here is this. As a gay man who's been in love with Colin forEVER, I'm appalled that it is just NOW coming out that he has a gay brother...AFTER said gay brother is ready to get hitched. Colin's definitely got the hot genes in the family. ;)

    • "Oops, Our B...": Health Officials Issue Apology to Gay Community for M...

Over the last few weeks, the subject of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) has hit the media making a big impact in the gay community. Several reputable news agencies including the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle published detailed studies about the spread of the disease between men who have homosexual relations. While the risk of the” superbug” does have a higher rate of infection among men who have sex with men, the University of California San Francisco, who first reported the problem, issued a public apology to the gay community for singling them out as major contributor of this potentially deadly disease. God-Des and She, a hip-hop duo, who are getting slowly into mainstream hip-hop scene with smart, fly, cool, and deep lyrics. At the first glance their video to Love You Better doesn't tell about any special story. It's a love story of a girl falling for, yes, indeed, another girl."

Forget killer bees or plagues. A more sinister threat is heading for small town America, at least according to conservative Christian watchdog group American Family Association...HOMOSEXUALS.

The group, which boasts a membership of 3,346,700 on its website, recently sent out an email blast marketing a new documentary, "They're Coming to Your Town," about how they say a small group of gay activists took over the city council in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and began imposing "their homosexual agenda on that community."

The actual email blast can be found at http://www.goodasyou.org/AFAtownblast.png and goes on to suggest the 28 minute DVD (which sells for $14.95 on the AFA site) is "perfect for viewing during Sunday School."
