Obama 'Sings' Rick Astley's Hit
Barack Obama's never gonna give you up.
YouTube user Hugh Atkin pushed the rickroll meme a step further with Barack Roll -- an ingeniously edited video (embedded) that mashes together snippets of Obama dancing and talking to re-create the lyrics to Rick Astley's net-popular song, "Never Gonna Give You Up."
"Not that clever, and might be better executed, but it needed to be done," Atkin wrote on his personal blog. "Hope you like it."
Barack Roll is similar to DJ RX's 2005 mashup of President George W. Bush "singing" the words to the U2 hit "Sunday Bloody Sunday," and is quickly gaining in popularity. Since going live Saturday, the Barack Roll video has tallied nearly half a million views and skyrocketed to YouTube's Most Viewed Video slot for this week in Australia.
Shortly after posting Barack Roll, Atkin uploaded another clip juxtapozing the Obama video with the Astley original so fans could compare the two. Barack Obama's never gonna give you up. ... more -

Final Opening Day at Shea Stadium gets Rickrolled and subsequently booed...
An online contest to choose a new singalong song at Mets home games attracted thousands of pranksters who flooded the team's Web site to vote for a Rick Astley tune.
The glory that will go with the last ever opening day at Shea Stadium went with a blast... or ∫"Never gonna give you up... never gonna let you down..."∫

Give the Mets credit for playing it, too, although the public address announcer essentially explained how they got punked. He told the 56,000 people here they were "Rick-rolled."

NY Met's 8th Inning Rickroll
The New York Mets are running a contest to chose what sing-along song gets played at Shea Stadium this year. The jokesters over at Digg — who haven't heard that rickrolling is over — got the idea to stuff the ballot box in favor of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up." "All year, the Mets and their fans will get rickrolled during the 8th inning."
Other songs being voted on include "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison and the theme from Friends. During the time I've been writing this post, the prank has gotten more than 1,000 Diggs. I suspect this just might work — and end up in the New York Times, to boot.

The New York Mets refuse to get Rick Rolled
In a shameful move the New York Mets have decided to opt against playing Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” the clear winner in their online fan vote to determine what song would replace Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” as the new eighth-inning sing-along tune.
The Rick Astley song “Never Gonna Give You Up” received over 5 million fan votes from sites like Digg.com and won by an overwhelming margin but as NY Daily News reporter Adam Rubin says The Mets didn’t care about your vote.
“Rather than commit to that as the new eighth-inning song since it probably doesn’t reflect the fan base’s wishes, the Mets will play the top six selections once apiece during the first six games of their home stand. The one that draws the largest crowd response will stick.
If you would like to protest The Mets terrible terrible terrible PR decision to deny Rick Astley and our worthy internet votes you can contact:

Rick Astley talks about Rick Rolling
No, don't worry, this is not a Rick Roll, it's the real deal. Now 42, Rick Astley is no stranger to the phenomena and says that he finds Anonymous' use of the song in the Anti-Scientology raids "hilarious".
“I think it’s just one of those odd things where something gets picked up and people run with it,” Astley said. “But that’s what brilliant about the Internet.”
One thing that struck me is how Northern and normal he sounds, I've met people in the pub who consider themselves more of a star than this guy. How someone so normal can have such a large, and weird, impact on the world is pretty interesting in itself. If you're intrigued by the real man behind the rick roll, then check him out when he tours the UK with Bananarama and a whole host of other cheesy 80's bands.
"I just think it’s bizarre and funny. My main consideration is that my daughter doesn’t get embarrassed about it.”
