    • Darfur....Do You Care?

''The U.N. has passed more than 17 resolutions concerning DARFUR, unless these resolutions are implemented and sanctions against Sudanese officials are enforced, the violence and destruction will continue.

The African Union remains without authority to protect civilians and Sudan continues to oppose sending U.N. troops into Darfur.

While Violence spreads into CHAD and the Central African Republic , humanitarian groups are pulling out of DARFUR.

Since 2003, it is estimated that 400,000 have died and 2.5 million have been displaced from their homes.

    • Asian people want to be Caucasian? Why? Europeanization of beauty standards

Inspired by a recent report aired on Channel Nine news 2/25/08

Asians seem to have overtime adopted the habits of European culture, So much so that they now seem to want to have a European identity, are Asians not proud of the way they look? or rather have Asians become so deluded by the European image so relentlessly promoted via the media that they no longer appreciate their own identity? The strange effort to adopt the Caucasian accent, the effort to look Caucasian? what's the problem? More and more Asian women seem to be wedding Caucasian men, why? I live in New York, and I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone, I'm seeing this awful trend with my own eyes. Speak up for your selves and let me know what you think.

Well it took Canada long enough but America is now on its list of "countries that torture". The funny thing is that the US has enough gaul to complain and insist that we be removed from the list. I have taken to calling them the "Ribbentrop Brigade". • The news of the (Mac)World

Four major announcements from Steve Jobs' keynote at MacWorld this morning, broken into the top 6 stories at the link:

      1. Apple TV is cheaper and better, and you can now buy movies from iTunes (you have 30 days to start watching and 24 hours to finish, $2.99 for old movies, $3.99 for new, $1 more for each if you want HD) to watch on tv, computer, iPod, whatever!

      2. Nifty software updates for both the iPhone and the iPod touch, including customizing your screen, improved maps, and of course (see #1) movie watching!

      3. Wireless backup of your Mac laptops that works with Time Machine (which is pretty amazing if you haven't played with it already).

      4. And...an uber skinny (0.16 - 0.76 thick - yes, it's not one width all the way), uber light (3 pounds), uber cool (full keyboard, iPhone like touch pad mouse (squeeze to shrink, open fingers to expand etc.), iSight webcam etc.) laptop, the MacBook Air.

      Apple is so dang cool.

And no, it isn't a new breakfast cereal.;-). To me it is a breakthrough that could bring solar energy to the level it should have been at twenty years ago. • Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs of 2007

Wired Magazine has compiled their top ten scientific breakthroughs of 2007. Those making the list include: Scientists cloning rhesus monkey to produce stem cells, a transparent material as strong as steel, and researchers turning skin cells to stem cells.

But my personal favorite? Hands down chimpanzees making spears for hunting. You know what that means. We're one step closer to a real life "Planet of the Apes!"

    • Home brew iPhone ring tones

Using info I gleaned from Wired's howto wiki, I made my own iPhone ring tones last night. Super cinchy (as I used to say in school). Tools I used (and possible substitutes):

      GarageBand (QuickTime Pro)
      iTunes

      How I did it:

      1) Open GarageBand
      2) Delete the default Grand Piano track GarageBand throws up there by selecting the track and hitting CMD-delete.
      3) Click on the little film/video/music button in the bottom right corner
      4) Drag in a good ring tone candidate. Songs/audio with lots of bass or drum beats only aren't so good. Try acoustic instruments or techno w/ a good mid frequency melody.
      5) Select the portion of the song you'd like to make into a ring tone by getting rid of everything else. Try to make a nice loop out of it. That's the hard part. Getting the loop juuuuuuust right. One little tip is to turn off snapping by selecting to Control/Snap To Grid. This will give you much more control over the edits.
      6) Select Share/Export song to disk... and choose a reasonable destination (like your desktop).
      7) Change the extension of the file from .m4a to .4r
      8) Drag into iTunes. It will automatically be added to the Ringtones folder.
      9) In iTunes, if Ringtone sync isn't already checked, turn it on.
      10) Sync with your iPhone.
      11) Set your new ring tone as the ringer.
      12) Sit back and impress your friends the next time your phone rings.

    • MacWorld to debut ultraportable MacBook?

So the overwhelming word on the street is Steve-O is set announce a super-slim, smaller screen MacBook at MacWorld in January. It's further rumored to retail for just $1,500.

As a die hard Mac fan boy, it took a lot for me to switch to a (gulp!) Sony VAIO ultraportable little number with an 11 inch screen and a carbon fiber chassis. Don't get me wrong, that little VAIO rocks - it's just that I wish it ran OS X.

If these rumors are true, then perhaps Apple will have answered my call. A fan boy can dream...
