Nepal says to deport illegal Tibetans back to Tibet
Nepal's Maoist-led government will deport Tibetan exiles living illegally in the country, an official said on Thursday, a move likely aimed at stopping regular protests against its influential neighbor China.
More than 20,000 Tibetans live in Nepal. Thousands fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.
Those early arrivals were given refugee status in Nepal. But new exiles from Tibet cannot stay in Nepal, which hands them over to the U.N. refugee agency for their onward journey to India, where their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama lives.
Now, Nepal wants to deport all Tibetans without either official refugee status or U.N. documents back to Tibet, where they could face action by Chinese authorities.
Tibetans are not allowed to organize any anti-China activities in Nepal, but in recent months they have staged near-daily demonstrations in Kathmandu against the Chinese crackdown on protests in Tibet in March.
The new Nepal move is seen as an attempt to discourage the exiles from organizing anti-China protests.
Home Ministry Spokesman Modraj Dotel said police had detained 106 Tibetans to see if they had necessary papers to establish their refugee status.
"If they have the status they will be allowed to stay," Dotel said. "Otherwise, they have to leave the country."
Dotel said the verification of papers was being done with the help of the United Nations refugee agency.
Beijing has been pressing Nepal to do more to stop the protests, mainly staged outside a Chinese consular office in Kathmandu.
Nepal's new leader, Maoist Prime Minister Prachanda visited China in August, when he met Chinese President Hu Jintao and reaffirmed Nepal's one-China policy. Nepal's Maoist-led government will deport Tibetan exiles living illegally in the country, an official said on Thursday, a move li... more -
20,000 Tibetans Protest 24 hour ahead of Olympic Opening day
An estimated 2,000 Tibetan exiles demonstrated in the Nepali capital Kathmandu Thursday, a day ahead of the official start of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
The demonstration was the biggest by Tibetan exiles in Nepal since their protests started in March.
The demonstrators, including monks, nuns and schoolchildren, gathered near a Buddhist temple on the eastern outskirts of the capital and expressed anger over the Chinese crackdown on Tibetan protestors in Lhasa earlier this year.
Many protests wore headbands and T-shirts calling for 'Free Tibet.'
'We timed our protest just ahead of the Olympic Games as it is the right time to highlight the cause of Tibet,' said Lakpa Tenzin, chairman of the Tibetan Young Buddhist Association.
'We want China to guarantee religious freedom and human rights in Tibet.'
The organizers also said they feared a renewed Chinese crackdown in Tibet once the games were over.
There were minor scuffles between police and demonstrators after police tried to snatch away banners. However, the gathering proceeded generally peacefully.
There have been frequent anti-China protests by Tibetan exiles in Nepal since March despite police breaking up demonstrations and detaining protestors.
Nepal has come under increasing criticism from international human rights agencies for its handling of the protests.
In July, the US-based Human Rights Watch said the Nepal government was cracking down on Tibetan protestors because of pressure by the Chinese government.
The group also said more than 8,000 Tibetans had been arrested by police since the protests began nearly five months ago. The charge has been denied by the government.
Nepal recognizes Tibet as an integral part of China. Nearly 20,000 Tibetans refugees live in Nepal. An estimated 2,000 Tibetan exiles demonstrated in the Nepali capital Kathmandu Thursday, a day ahead of the official start of the Olym... more -

Tibetan monks forced to take patriotic tests
GANNAN PREFECTURE, China (Reuters) - Three months after demonstrations flared up in Tibetan towns and monasteries across China, monks say they now have to pass a patriotic test, possibly in September, to be allowed to remain as monks.
Tension runs high in Gannan, a heavily Tibetan area in southern Gansu province, which was convulsed by marches and attacks against government buildings and some non-Tibetan shops, after demonstrations turned violent in the Tibetan capital Lhasa on March 14.
Monks now struggle to pay fines and master texts on "patriotic education", while armed paramilitary units guard access to main monasteries.
Work teams have moved into monasteries to supervise study sessions that are supposed to break monks' allegiance to the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader who China believes is responsible for the unrest.
Monks say the teams are likely to stay until after the Olympic Games are held in Beijing in August.
The slim, pastel-covered textbooks, in Chinese and Tibetan, cover Chinese law, including laws of autonomous regions, and chapters condemning Tibetan independence and the Dalai Lama.

Buddhism--Scenery
For centuries, Buddhism has been the dominant religion of the Eastern world. Today it remains the predominant religion in China, Japan, Korea, and much of southeast Asia. With the rise of the Asian population in the U.S., Buddhism has made a tremendous impact in the United States. Presently, there are over 300,000 Buddhists in the U.S. It remains the dominant religion in the state of Hawaii and many prominent Americans have accepted this religion, including the former governor of California,
Jerry Brown.

Tibet's Karmapa, 22, is seen as possible bridge with China
First there were violent anti-Chinese riots in Tibet, then a harsh government crackdown on dissent followed by noisy anti-Beijing protests along the path of the Olympic torch relay. Then in Seattle, hundreds of angry Chinese showed up to protest appearances by the Dalai Lama, deriding the Tibetan spiritual leader as a liar and a "CIA-funded militant” responsible for violence in Tibet.
