Appeals Court throws out conviction in Abramoff scandal
A U.S. appeals court today ordered a new trial for a former White House aide who was convicted on charges of lying and obstructing justice in the investigation of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
A three judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit this morning threw out David H. Safavian's conviction on charges of lying to an ethics officer at the General Services Administration, where he had been chief of staff, and an investigator for the GSA's inspector general.
Safavian was convicted in June 2006 of covering up his efforts to assist Abramoff in acquiring two properties controlled by the GSA, including the historic Old Post Office in the District. He also was convicted of concealing information about a lavish golfing excursion to Scotland and London with Abramoff in the summer of 2002. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison but has been free while he appealed.
Writing for the unanimous panel, Circuit Judge A. Raymond Randolph ruled that Safavian was under no legal obligation to disclose details of his dealings with Abramoff when he asked for an opinion from the GSA's ethics officer about accepting free air fare on a chartered jet for the golf vacation. He told the ethics official he was paying for his hotels, meals and greens fees.

Crooks and liars: McCain’s lobbyist friends
One of the big stories with Obama now leading the DNC is that he has announced that not only will his presidential campaign not accept lobbyist donations, neither will the DNC any longer. And while McCain has made some tentative statements about public financing of his campaign, he has yet to commit to anything, other than the sheer number of lobbyists working on his campaign.
The DNC has put out this ad tying McCain to his lobbyists buddies. From the press release:
“While Senator McCain talks about transparency and accountability on the campaign trail, back home in Washington he and the lobbyists in his inner circle refuse to apply those same standards to his own campaign,” said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney.
“Senator Obama and the Democratic Party have promised to change the way business is done in Washington and are taking real steps to ensure that the American people’s priorities dominate the agenda in Washington. If Senator McCain is serious about his call to clean up Washington, he should join us. Otherwise, Senator McCain is once again showing why he is the wrong choice for America’s future.”

Obama pledges support for Israel
Barack Obama has pledged unwavering support for Israel in his first foreign policy speech since declaring himself the Democratic nominee for president.
He told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), a prominent Jewish lobby, Israel's security was "sacrosanct" and "non-negotiable".
He also said he would do "everything" to stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon.
As the Democrats' primary season ended, Mr Obama received the support of enough delegates to clinch the nomination.
His rival, Hillary Clinton, has yet to concede.
Their speeches to Aipac focused on similar topics - with Mr Obama setting out what he would do as US president, while Mrs Clinton referred to what "the next president" should do.
She told Aipac the Democratic party's strong commitment to Israel would continue under the next Democratic president.
"I know Senator Obama understands what is at stake here," she said.
"It is an honour to call him my friend - and let me be clear, I know that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel."
~~~~~~~~
This is the first thing he does after declaring himself the winner of the nomination? Don't tell me that none of them are beholding to lobbies to get elected in this country. And isn't that sweet? After all the division they caused they are now friends because they will get what they want. This to me is not the politics of change but the status quo.
Did Obama or Clinton mention that it is wrong for any country including Israel to have nukes? Did they explain why American taxpayers don't have healthcare but yet our money goes to buy tanks and weapons for the Israeli government to bomb innocent people and children and keep them from having water and food thus putting their own people in danger of attacks? And what does Obama mean by doing "everything" to eliminate the threat of Iran getting a weapon? Didn't the IAEA already claim they don't have one? That sounds just like the rhetoric we are getting now. Does this also mean that if Bush moves to attack Iran they would condone it?
Just what country are they running for president for? Why is such devotion to AIPAC obligatory for every presidential candidate? What about obligations to the people of this country who on the whole have had enough of this? When someone actually sees the "change" he speaks of, let me know. General Petraeus: Zionism's Military Poodle
General Petraeus: “President Ahmadinejad and other Iranian leaders promised to end their support for the special groups but the nefarious activities of the Quds Force have continued.”
Senator Joseph Lieberman: “Is it fair to say that the Iranian-backed special groups are responsible for the murder of hundreds of American soldiers and thousands of Iraqi soldiers and civilians?” General Petraeus: “It certainly is…That is correct.”
General Petraeus testimony to the US Senate, April 8-9, 2008.
“The Israeli flag is proudly displayed above the Sacred Ark alongside the American flag…”( in an orthodox synagogue in wealthy Georgetown, Washington DC. The entrance fee to the synagogue is $1000 for a single holiday.) “On each Sabbath the prayers include the benediction for the Israeli Jewish soldiers and the prayer for the welfare of the Israeli government and its officials. Many Jewish American Administration pray there. They not only don’t try to conceal their religious affiliation, but go to great lengths to demonstrate their Judaism since it may help their careers greatly. The enormous Jewish influence in Washington is not limited to the government. In the Washingtonian, medias a very significant part of the most important personages and of the presenters of the most popular programs on the TV are warm Jews…and let us not forget,in this context, the Jewish predominance in the Washingtonian academic institutions.”
Avinoam Bar-Yosef (the Israeli daily newspaper) Ma’riv September 2, 1994 (translated by Israel Shahak)
When President Bush appointed General David Petraeus Commander (head) of the Multinational Forces in Iraq, his appointment was hailed by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post as a brilliant decision: A general of impeccable academic and battlefield credentials and a warrior and counter-insurgency (terrorist) intellectual. The media and the President, the Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and Congress, described his appointment as ‘America’s last best hope for salvation in Iraq’. Senator Hilary Clinton joined the chorus of pro-war politicians in praise and support of Petraeus’ ‘professionalism and war record’ in Northern Iraq. In contrast, Admiral William Fallon, his predecessor and former commander, had called Petraeus’ briefings ‘a piece of brown-nosing chicken shit’.
Barack Obama's Ties To Nuclear Power
I'm surprised any network even dared to touch this. But it does prove to me that Barack Obama is no more anti-lobbyist than Hillary Clinton is. However, more importantly, I am not convinced that he would not use nukes in a military strike. Even at the debates, he has made it clear that he would not hesitate to attack Pakistan (and like Bush has stated that terrorists are planning to hit us again) and just to remind you, Pakistan has nukes. For me it is hard to look credible for you to say you are against nuclear proliferation yet for nuclear power. And as this wound up, the bill he stated he passed was watered down and never became law. Is this then really change or just more of the same wrapped in a different package? And this issue is important to me and one I think should be important to more people. Nuclear power is not the "clean green" energy source everyone has been led to believe it is, and Obama's ties to lobbyists along with Clinton regarding this make me very wary of just how much they will be for truly eliminating nukes while allowing subsidies for gigantic nuclear power plants to be built. And one other thing, how would the residents of any town know that any "voluntary" policing was working? In the beginning of this Obama stated that the bill regarded notification of what the power plant "believed to be radioactive." That is just an open invitation for them to lie about what they are still emitting and simply saying it isn't radioactive enough to warrant notification. Why are they allowed to leak at all? So as long as they "notify" residents they don't have any other accountability? Again, like the Bush administration we get "voluntary" policing of a potentially deadly hazard to humans, marine life, air, and water. And frankly, that isn't good enough for me. I'm surprised any network even dared to touch this. But it does prove to me that Barack Obama is no more anti-lobbyist than Hillary Cl... more
Sex scandal charge against McCain? He says no way
Sen. John McCain denied assertions published in The New York Times that he once had a close relationship with a female lobbyist whose clients had business before his Senate committee.
"I'm disappointed in The New York Times piece. It's not true," he told reporters in Ohio on Thursday, his wife, Cindy, standing by his side.
He added that he has never "done anything that would betray the public trust or make a decision" that would favor a particular group.
End Aerial Wolf Hunting
Explosive new video blasts the justification for Alaskas current aerial wolf hunting program and rallies voters to end it. Using testimony from Alaska Department of Fish & Game staff, a master hunting guide, and Board of Game members, this video exposes the fallacy behind Governor Sarah Palins claim that predator control is based on sound science. Declarations that the program is for the benefit of subsistence hunters are shattered with documentation showing that sport and trophy hunters take up to 73% of prey in areas where aerial wolf hunting has taken place. End Aerial Wolf Hunting rallies support for H.R. 3663, legislation now being considered in the U.S. Congress which will close the loophole in the Federal Airborne Hunting Act that has been exploited to allow this practice to continue. Five years in the making, this video exposes the truth about the stranglehold the hunting lobby has on wildlife management in Alaska. Barack Obama Inc. The Birth of A Washington Machine
His motives may be sincere, but I fear even he too has been co-opted to some degree by corporate lobbyists. So if that is the case, how can he call for change if he conducts his campaign like a status quo candidate? Where are all the millions he is getting to run this campaign coming from? And how can you call for change and work to benefit companies like Archer Daniels Midland, which is an agribusiness company making a killing in corn ethanol that is not environmentally sound?
I'm not posting this BTW to attack him, but I do believe that before a vote is cast people should look beyond the dazzle and soundbites of a rally and understand that when someone continually says it is "time for change" that they aren't then representing and being financially supported by the very status quo they say we need a change from. And to be honest, I am not so sure that Barack Obama as a president would keep us out of another war. And as the last sentence here also states, anyone so adored by this country's corporate media has to have sold their soul a bit.
Personally, I'm tired of the political rhetoric and catch phrases, and I'm tired of the overexposure of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the press and find it very suspect. Two primaries does not a president make. And yes, I know John Edwards isn't perfect either and there are also things about him that I too disagree with because I actually have read about him and not just accepted a media hyping of him giving a speech at a rally. However, when it comes to walking the walk about running the moneylenders out of the Washington DC temple, John Edwards to me is the most sincere based on his record. And as he stated we will never see change unless we break the stranglehold corporations and lobbyists have on our government. And I am truly beginning to doubt that Barack Obama is the one who will do that. His motives may be sincere, but I fear even he too has been co-opted to some degree by corporate lobbyists. So if that is the case, ho... more -
