St. Louis: John Armleder and Olivier Mosset @Contemporary Art Museum thru 8/3
In May 2008, the Contemporary hands its galleries over to the conceptual artists John Armleder and Olivier Mosset. Jointly conceived by the artists—who have been close for more than twenty years—the exhibition represents neither a curated two- person show nor two independent, solo exhibitions. Instead, it proposes an active juxtaposition of parallel (and opposite) artistic approaches, where artworks act as obstacles, and obstacles act as artworks. Vegans Gone Wild in Portland
At first glance, Casa Diablo Gentlemen’s Club in Portland, Ore., looks just like all the other strip clubs popping up in that city. Take a closer look at it and you will come to find out that all the employees, management and strippers are all either vegan or vegetarian. At the club, leather is not allowed to be worn on - stage just pleather, and clients are served tofu, not red meat. Since its opening last month, Feminists in Portland, whom the owner of the club calls, “femenazi’s,” have been complaining that this type of club is sending the wrong message in “using sex appeal to sell an idea.” According to one of the people interviewed in the New York Times Article, “it seems that using sex appeal is working, we’ve gotten a lot of men eating vegetarian, if not vegan.” At first glance, Casa Diablo Gentlemen’s Club in Portland, Ore., looks just like all the other strip clubs popping up in that city. US Admits to Sending Nuclear Parts to Taiwan..Whoops
The United States military this past week admitted that, "fuses designed for use on intercontinental ballistic missiles were mistakenly shipped to Taiwan in 2006." This comes on the heels that in September 2007, a b-52 bomber flew 2000 miles over the United States with six armed nuclear warheads, weapons in which the pilots and military did not know were turned on. The U.S. is investigating, but I wonder how and why these "accidents" are happening in the first place....and these are just the ones we are finding out about. Pentagon finds no link between Hussein and bin-Laden
The Pentagon is expected to release a report this week that found no links between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin-Laden's al-Qaeda terror network. Prior to the start of the Iraq War, the Bush administration justified the invasion of Iraq based on the ideas that Hussein had "Weapons of Mass Destruction” and that Hussein was linked to bin-Laden. After five years, no evidence of WMD's have been discovered and now this report dispels any link between the two. Al-Jazeera is reporting that the study "does indicate Hussein supported terrorism in the Middle East and used it as a routine power," but that it was only directed at "Iraqi Citizens."
If this does not prove that we were lied to about Iraq, what does? I wonder what they are going to come up with to justify invading Iran which seems to be in the works... Kimmel gets Silverman back, BAD!
Well, it's official. Jimmy Kimmel is even funnier than his girlfriend. In this hilarious answer to the "I'm f**ing Matt Damon" Kimmel pulled out the big guns and even spoofed "We are the World" with his answer to the sordid and fake love affair between girlfriend Sarah Silverman and Matt Damon. It looks like he is now "f**ing Matt's best friend Ben Affleck" and even got Brad Pitt, Robin Williams and Indiana Jones himself in on the fun. Thank goodness the writers are back. That's a big high-five for Team Kimmel. Well, it's official. Jimmy Kimmel is even funnier than his girlfriend. In this hilarious answer to the "I'm f**ing Matt Damon" Kimmel ... more

Trading in violence for theater in the West Bank
A few years ago, Zakariya Zubeidi was the leader of the militant group Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade in the West Bank city of Jenin and was one of Israel's most wanted men. A few months ago, under a controversial new amnesty program to stop inter-Palestinian violence, Zubeidi agreed to give up his M-16 and started a children's theater program instead. "Theater is much more beneficial than a weapon that is aimless, that does not have a proper target," Zubeidi said in the NPR interview. These days he spends his time reaching out to youth of the Jenin Refugee Camp and is encouraging the children in the program to write and act their aggressions out instead of doing it through militant, violent means. Ahmed al Raohk, a 19 year old aspiring actor in the refugee camp and one of the kids involved in the theater said, "I want to spread the message that people should not be afraid to say what they think...and through art, maybe they can do that." God and Basketball
This week, Rick Majerus, coach of the St. Louis University Billikens basketball team was at rally for Hillary Clinton and said that he was pro-choice and pro stem-cell research. Being the coach of the very catholic university's basketball team, the Archbishop, Raymond Burke, called for Majerus to be disciplined and even possibly fired from coaching the team for his comments. While Majerus, in his first year as SLU's head coach, should maybe be disciplined for his team's record so far his season, but should he be fired or get into trouble because he believes in the opposite view of the university? Should political or religious views play any relevance to how someone coaches a team or should it be separated because after all, it is just basketball? Cracking down on Fun in St. Louis
First, they were trying to tell us not to swear in public. Now, it's that we can't dance on the bar anymore. Are these laws keeping us "safe and just" or are they simply taking away our freedom and just one more way the government is trying to gain more control over us? Falling Together in New Orleans - Vignette 4
Social Dress New Orleans - 730 After
Takashi Horisaki and a small team of volunteers were working 20-hour days in the 100-degree heat when OPP found them completing an art project in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans. Working on a largely abandoned block of the city, they worked with a mission to remind people of "what is still happening" in NOLA two years after the floods.
Takashi's ambitious media project involved the laborious process of covering the surface of the shotgun-style house in latex and cheesecloth to create a replica that itself could be "displaced" as a sculpture.
Falling Together in New Orleans: Vignette 4 looks at the process and motivations and then visits the artist and the sculpture at it's first home in New York City's Socrates Sculpture Park.
Takashi hopes to displace the sculpture across the U.S. and world to raise awareness about the still displaced people of New Orleans struggling to return home.
The film features music by Kevn Kinney. http://www.kevnkinney.com) Social Dress New Orleans - 730 After ... more -
St. Louis and the effort to keep the Fortune 500's
Well, another one bites the dust for St. Petersburg, Florida and for all the towns just like it. I am Jen, representing "The Lou" for Current Journalism and have been working on a pod on the loss of big business in cities like St. Louis and St. Pete. In 2001, there were over 18 Fortune 500's in St. Louis, now there are only eight, and one more may be on the move. I am trying to figure out why? They say that St. Louis is undergoing a renaissance and it seems like that may be the case, but I never really hear anyone say, after college or grad school, I am moving to St. louis....It's always, New York, LA, San Fran, Chicago. Wash U is one of the best business schools in the country and it's right here in STL...the problem is no one wants to stay here - not big business, not the educated. Will St. Louis be able to compete in business against those top tier cities? Where else is this happening and what are the leaders in St. Louis doing to ensure that we keep the remaining companies from leaving???? I will keep you posted. Well, another one bites the dust for St. Petersburg, Florida and for all the towns just like it. I am Jen, representing "The Lou" for ... more

How is the economy treating you?
As the recent real estate market shocks have shown, the economy is a bit on edge these days.
Current correspondent Adam Yamaguchi and Current producer Grace Baek started this story a while back, and interviewed engineering students who claimed that their industry was being hollowed out by competition from abroad, who claimed their undergrad degrees didn't mean much, and that they'd have to get MBAs in order to attain jobs that wouldn't immediately be outsourced to other nations. They interviewed a Cal grad who lamented at the fact that, as a child of a solidly middle class family, she'd be unable to enjoy the same standard of living as her parents did.
How are you, and other Americans, doing economically today, and what are your prospects for the future? Do you believe you will be able to enjoy the standard of living that your parents did, or perhaps improve upon it? Are we about to see a fundamental shift in the American middle class? As the recent real estate market shocks have shown, the economy is a bit on edge these days. ... more -
