SF: Protest in Paris 1968: Photographs by Serge Hambourg @BAM/PFA thru 6/1
Less familiar but similarly revealing documents of a famously turbulent moment are Serge Hambourg’s photographs of the protests against the conservative government of General Charles de Gaulle in Paris in 1968. During this year, Hambourg was working as a photojournalist for the weekly magazine Le nouvel observateur. Some of his images of the demonstrations were printed in the magazine; most of them, however, are being seen for the first time in this exhibition, organized by the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College. The exhibition is on view in the Theater Gallery. Less familiar but similarly revealing documents of a famously turbulent moment are Serge Hambourg’s photographs of the protests agains... more

2007 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography
This was awarded a while back now, but I recently came across it again and thought I should post it on current. There's nothing more to say on it. The pictures speak for themselves. Putin's Russia
This is a great narrated photo journal that shows a changing Russia before Parliamentary elections on Sunday. The images are both stark and bleak but also they are incredibly beautiful. Often is it seems that Russia maintains similarities with the west but its difference is significant and its isolation is immense.

A Multimedia Bonanza
San Jose Mercury News photojournalist and multimedia superstud Richard Koci Hernandez put together this interactive mural/collage on a San Jose neighborhood using VUVOX. This was a special pilot project for VUVOX's mural feature, but anyone should be able to use it and create their own project in the near future. In the meantime, check out the other stuff VUVOX has. It's a crazy web 2.0, multimedia mash up, free, web-based application that creates customizable, embeddable content. The Reality of a Wrongful Convictions
This is a beautiful piece of photojournalism and tells a terrible but inspiring story - it demonstrates how anyone can tell a story in the digital age.

A photojournalist's self examination
I really liked this. It's a video by US News & World Report photojournalist Jim Lo Scalzo and I thought it would be a fairly pretentious piece about how much he sacrificed while "bearing witness" to the injustice of the world etc. etc. As a photojournalist myself, I kind of hate that crap. However, it's actually entertaining in a black humor sort of way and really gets to why a lot of us like our jobs. Sure you get to tell important stories, but you also get to see some really crazy, messed up stuff that most other people don't. It also gets to another weird aspect of the job- if your body of work is, or should be, the defining characteristic of your life. I work at a little paper, but these are still things I think about.
