Has Manhunt Destroyed Gay Culture?
Crutchley, a liberal Republican with a tight white beard, admits that he felt anxious during Manhunt’s first years, before his and Basile’s initial investment of $800,000 bore fruit. Now, seated at his desk and surrounded by giant photographs of body builders’ glutes, Crutchley says the company brings in at least $2.4 million per month -- almost $30 million a year -- not counting ad revenues, and prospects for growth are strong. Manhunt’s success measures the extent to which online cruising has changed gay urban social life.
Manhunt’s annual income from memberships alone is roughly the same as the total amount of individual contributions to this country’s two biggest gay political groups, the Human Rights Campaign and NGLTF. Foreman says, “If we could leverage their membership for activism, there’s no limit to what we could do.” Crutchley, a liberal Republican with a tight white beard, admits that he felt anxious during Manhunt’s first years, before his and Bas... more -

VIOLENS: BLOOD AND STRINGS.
Weston: Every article I’ve read about you tries to describe your sound. How about you tell us instead - at least that way it will be accurate.
Violens: Generally, we’ve described our sound as spiritual/aggressive, psychedelic/creepy… warm/fuzzy? We hope it’s all those things and more. Our influences are all over the place and obvious at the same time. Violens is a melding of the somewhat contrasting words “violence” and “violins”, and the images and emotions these two words evoke is what we strive to conjure in the music.
W: You’ve been opening for MGMT and Yeasayer, touring now with Grizzly Bear, and will soon be playing with Grand Archives. Pretty diverse, but they all want you - what’s the connection?
V: Much of this is due to the friendships we’ve developed with MGMT and Grizzly Bear (with all of us being local) and the mutual interest in each other’s music. We are fans of both groups and honored to support them. Jorge recently had a great time remixing ‘Time To Pretend’ for MGMT. We just got off a short tour run with them, which was amazing, and we’re looking forward to opening for them on their UK and Ireland tour in November. We don’t know the music of Grand Archives well, but from what we’ve heard, we’re psyched to play the Seaport Music Festival with them. Net Neutrality Victory: FCC Votes 3-2 Against Comcast
"Comcast was delaying subscribers' downloads and blocking their uploads. It was doing so 24/7, regardless of the amount of congestion on the network or how small the file might be," Mr. Martin said. "Even worse, Comcast was hiding that fact by making affected users think there was a problem with their Internet connection or the application. Today, the commission tells Comcast to stop."
The Federal Communications Commission on Friday voted 3-2 to cite Comcast Corp. for throttling Internet traffic to customers who use high-bandwidth file-sharing services.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin wants the reprimand to set a precedent for how Internet providers can control the flow of Web traffic to consumers.
Comcast, for its part, is reviewing its legal options. The cable giant believes it shouldn't be punished for actions that the FCC hasn't addressed through formal rules.
At an FCC meeting on the Comcast reprimand, Mr. Martin had harsh words for Comcast. "Comcast was delaying subscribers' downloads and blocking their uploads. It was doing so 24/7, regardless of the amount of c... more -
DadDaily to Launch MySpace for Dads
Dad Daily, which just began a preview mode today, is a social network for dads founded by tax attorney and dad of two Art Giacosa. The site is still in the early stages, they say, and the feature set is very similar to the original version of MySpace - there are blogs, classifieds, events, groups, chat, photo rating, search, music, videos, a forum and a place to share parenting stories. You can also send messages to other users and see their online/offline status. Users have profile pages, too, of course. These are divided into three sections - your social profile, your business profile and your personal profile - and you can choose between four layouts. Other features include the ability to bookmark profiles and track your profile stats. The remaining sections seem low on content right now, but the “Stories” section is clearly inspired by Digg and Netscape, allowing you to submit parenting stories and have others vote on them.
It’s probably too early to comment specifically on Dad Daily’s new site, but I’m left wondering how many dads will take to online networking. We already have an abundance of mommy-focused social networks - Maya’s Mom, MothersClick, MommyBuzz, MTV’s ParentsConnect, Famster and many more. Meanwhile, Australian startup Minti seems to appeal to both moms and dads, with tagging, article sharing and a Q&A service similar to Yahoo Answers. Dad Daily say they’re not in it for the money, or getting funded or acquired, but I still wonder whether all these new niche networks will find an audience. Dad Daily, which just began a preview mode today, is a social network for dads founded by tax attorney and dad of two Art Giacosa. The... more -

How can we redefine beauty?
We have to stop looking to advertizing and media for their ideals of beauty. Beauty is an individual's own natural attraction to someone or something and it cannot be forced into some kind of universal mold that applies to everyone. As the world gets small and the internet takes over there are more opportunities for media and advertizing to put their standard of beauty in front of us, but I think people are getting wise to them now. I'd rather someone i know share their idea of beauty than someone in an office making a living selling me a lifestyle. We have to stop looking to advertizing and media for their ideals of beauty. Beauty is an individual's own natural attraction to ... more

Iranian-American youth struggle to define themselves
Teens at Camp Ayandeh learn how to blend their parents' history and culture with their contemporary lifestyles.
------
(excerpt)
Ramin Ostadhosseini needed to vent, and this gathering seemed the place to do it.
"I get Raymond, Roman and sometimes Ramen noodles," he told the circle, describing how non-Iranians butcher his name.
This group felt his pain. Here, sprawled out on a manicured lawn at Emory University were dozens of youths attending a weeklong summer camp designed to generate discussion on what it means to be Iranian-American.

Californians cleared to vote on same-sex marriage ban
The California Supreme Court has cleared the way for Californians to vote in November on whether to ban same-sex marriages in the state.
A gay couple is married in California in June. Voters could void same-sex marriages in the state in November. The court on Wednesday denied a petition to remove the initiative from the state's general election ballots. The unanimous decision was handed down without elaboration.
Hundreds of marriage licenses have been issued to same-sex couples since mid-June, a month after the court overturned the state's laws against such unions. However, on June 2, opponents of same-sex marriage filed for a ballot initiative that would ban such marriages in the state's constitution. Such a ban would overturn the court's May ruling. The California Supreme Court has cleared the way for Californians to vote in November on whether to ban same-sex marriages in the stat... more -

WOW Report: We Seen Cazwell at Burger King
In honor of his birthday and "I Seen Beyoncé at Burger King," his upcoming single and video, Cazwell was treated to an old-fashioned Michael Alig-style outlaw party at the Burger King at Delancey and Suffolk in New York. Of course, you can't go back in time, but 150 Cazwell fans gave it a New York try and for a brief shining moment the fast-food outlet became a full-on Burger Queen.
