Wearable kidney could help millions of people
Two researchers at UCLA, Martin Roberts and David B.N. Lee, have designed a peritoneal, wearable kidney that could replace the failing organs of a patient.
The automated, wearable artificial kidney (AWAK) functions continuously, instead of having to spend hours on a machine which is typically four hours at a time, three times a week.
The AWAK also regenerates and reuses the fluids and proteins contained in the dialysate which reduces protein loss and eliminates water loss. It is "bloodless", which means that it does not involve blood circulation outside the body.
AWAK is being called "dialysis-on-the-go" because of its wearability and automation. Around 1980, an artificial kidney machine was built, but the machine was portable, not wearable. This new technology would allow patients to go about their daily lives while on dialysis. Two researchers at UCLA, Martin Roberts and David B.N. Eight glasses of water a day does nothing for you
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania say there is no evidence drinking large amounts of water is beneficial for the average healthy person, and do not know how this widely held belief came about.
And it's not just your insides, the authors of the study said that while dehydration can decrease skin stiffness, no studies have shown any clinical benefit to skin tone as a result of increased water intake.

Teenager finds a couple of spare kidneys
A teenage girl who recently discovered she has four kidneys is hoping to be able to donate two of them to patients desperately in need of a transplant. Laura Moon, 18, from Leeds, is one of a tiny number of people to have four of the organs growing naturally. She only became aware of her unusual anatomy six months ago after undergoing an ultrasound scan to investigate stomach pains following a car crash. 'I realised that the doctor scanning me hadn't said anything for a long time. I thought he was going to give me bad news. But then he said: "You've got four kidneys." He measured them and I have two which are 14cm and two which are 9cm'. She has voiced interest in donating the two spares to someone who needs them. Underworld links to India's kidney theft scam
Latest investigation in the Gurgaon kidney racket case reveals that not only the police but also the underworld is on the lookout for the absconding main accused, Dr Amit alias Dr Santosh Raut.
According to the latest reports, the underworld wanted a share in the multi-crore-rupee organ trade. The underworld had prior knowledge of the kidney trade and gangster Chhota Shakeel was blackmailing and demanding extortion money from Dr Amit.
A senior police officer revealed that last year in January, the Crime Branch arrested two alleged shooters of gangster Chhota Shakeel, who had come to Mumbai to kill Dr Amit. “They said they had been sent to India after Raut’s family refused to pay Rs 25 crore to Shakeel,” he said.
The two shooters, Jameer Zaheer Ahmed Khan, and Tanvir Mohammad Aslam Sayyed, were arrested by the Anti-Extortion Cell on January 16, 2007, near the Bandra (West) bus station in Mumbai.
In 2006, Jameer called up Sunita, the ex-wife of Dr Amit from Dubai and demanded extortion money. Sunita told him that Amit no longer lived with her, but the gangsters were not convinced. They threatened to harm Amit as well as Akshay, their son. Sunita also received a threatening letter from Jameer.
