Judge stops publication of Potter book - International Herald Tribune
"J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, and Warner Brothers Entertainment won a court ruling Monday blocking the publication of a guide to the best-selling book and film series.
A U.S. district court judge, Robert Patterson, ruled that Rowling had proved that Steven Vander Ark's "Harry Potter Lexicon" would cause her irreparable harm as a writer.
Rowling sued RDR Books, based in Michigan, last year to stop publication of the lexicon.
Vander Ark runs the popular Harry Potter Lexicon Web site. Patterson ruled that RDR "had failed to establish an affirmative defense of fair use" and that publication of the book should be halted.
The book was assembled in just a month and was organized like an encyclopedia, including things like lists of characters, creatures, places and spells from the novels.
During the trial in April, Patterson had asked the two sides to settle the case.
Both Rowling and Vander Ark took the stand during an emotional hearing. Rowling called the proposed book a theft, saying the author had lifted large portions of her work without using quotation marks.
Vander Ark said his Web site, based on the same theme, had made little money between 2000 and 2008 and was hardly a threat to Rowling's earning power. He also called Rowling his literary idol."

Students to take Harry Potter exam
In a move bound to fuel 'dumbing'down' accusations, the UK's exam board has announced that Harry Potter will be placed on the school curriculum.
From next month, sixth-formers in more than 100 schools and colleges will be starting a new English baccalaureate which will, as one of its topics, allow students to complete a 5,000-word thesis on the fictitious boy wizard alongside their A-levels. Students will be asked to answer the question, "Would Harry Potter have been so successful 30 years ago?"
The baccalaureate has been devised by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA). Negotiations are under way to see whether it can be awarded points that could count towards university admission.

New Harry Potter fairytales to be published
Potter author J.K. Rowling announced that she will publish a book of fairy tales. She has decided to donate an expected $8 million (£4 million) to her charity for vulnerable children.
"The Tales of Beedle the Bard," which will be published on December 4, is mentioned in the seventh -- and final -- Potter book as having been left to Harry's friend Hermione by Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of their school Hogwarts.
Originally, only seven copies of "The Tales" were produced. They were bound in brown Moroccan leather and decorated in silver and moonstones. Six copies were given to people closely connected to the Potter books, while the seventh was auctioned off. It was bought by Amazon.com Inc. for about $4 million.
Bloomsbury Publishing and Scholastic will now publish editions with an introduction by Rowling, selling for $12.99, while Amazon will produce up to 100,000 collector's edition copies, which will aim to replicate the look and feel of the original book and sell for $100.
"The new edition will include the Tales themselves, translated from the original runes by Hermione Granger, and with illustrations by me, but also notes by Professor Albus Dumbledore, which appear by generous permission of the Hogwarts Headmasters' Archive," Rowling said in a statement. Harry Potter author sues her biggest fan
It's a battle worthy of Harry Potter himself. His creator, author J.K. Rowling, is locked in a courtroom fight not with an evil wizard but with one of her biggest fans, a former librarian from Michigan named Steven Vander Ark.
Rowling is suing to stop the publication of the "Harry Potter Lexicon," an encyclopedia authored by Voldemort -- I mean, Vander Ark -- that Rowling claims is a wholesale theft of her work.
The encyclopedia is an offshoot of Vander Ark's long-popular fan Web site, which details the world of Harry Potter, replete with magic spells, potions and quidditch rules. Even Rowling has admitted that she was a fan of the site. It's a battle worthy of Harry Potter himself. His creator, author J.K. Rowling, is locked in a courtroom fight not with an evil w... more -

J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard
There is no easy way to define the experience of seeing, holding, or reading J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, so let's just start with one word: "Whoa." The very fact of its existence (an artifact pulled straight out of a novel) is magical, not to mention the facts that only seven copies exist in all the world and each of the never-before-told tales is handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling herself (and it's quite clear from the first few pages that she has some skill as an artist). Rowling's handwriting is like the familiar scrawl of a favorite aunt--it's not hard to read, but it does require attention--allowing you to take it slow and savor the mystery of each next word. Muggle Quidditch - WTF?
Clearly bored of stealing traffic cones and sleeping around, these American students have invented Muggle Quidditch - a new sport based around the fictional Harry Potter game. To participate, players have to waddle around with a broomstick between their legs and throw dodgeballs at each other.
The best part is the snitch. In the Harry Potter books, the snitch is a zippy golden sphere that darts around the sky evading capture. In Muggle Quidditch, it's a cross country runner who legs it around the entire campus, on their own, with a tattered flag pinned to their waist.
