    • Michelangelo's David may crack

Michelangelo's famous statue of David could collapse because of its exposure to mass tourism, Italian experts say.

They say the massive statue of the naked boy-warrior is in danger because of its size, shape and the weakness of the marble from which it was carved. But they warn that the greatest risk comes from the footfall of many visitors who troop past it each day at Florence's Galleria dell'Accademia. The experts want to protect the statue by insulating it from the vibrations. This would cost about 1m euros (£785,000). Otherwise David could topple over, engineers from the University of Perugia say.

The warning follows a detailed study of the statue which showed that the cracks filled during major restoration works four years ago - on the occasion of its 500th anniversary - have already reopened. That restoration was itself controversial because it involved using distilled water to clean the statue - which critics argued could damage it. Michelangelo's David has had iconic status almost since its completion at the height of the Renaissance.

At the time it was seen as a powerful symbol of Florence's republican political ideals: David being the youthful warrior who felled the mighty Goliath in the Biblical Old Testament story. Since then it has enjoyed mixed fortunes: attacked by crowds when it was first displayed, then hacked by a deranged painter in 1991. The statue has also acquired kitsch status - its copies adorn everything from casinos in Las Vegas to tacky Mediterranean beach bars.

    • Huge statue of Roman ruler found

"Parts of a giant, exquisitely-carved marble sculpture depicting the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius have been found at an archaeological site in Turkey.

Fragments of the statue were unearthed at the ancient city of Sagalassos.

So far the statue's head, right arm and lower legs have been discovered, high in the mountains of southern Turkey.

Marcus Aurelius was portrayed by Richard Harris in the Oscar-winning 2000 film Gladiator and was one of the so-called "Five Good Emperors".

Marcus Aurelius reigned over the empire from 161AD until his death in 180AD.

In addition to his deeds as emperor, he is remembered for his writings, and is considered one of the foremost Stoic philosophers.

The partial statue was unearthed in the largest room at Sagalassos' Roman baths.

The cross-shaped room measures 1,250 sq m (13,500 sq ft), is covered in mosaics and was probably used as a frigidarium - a room with a cold pool which Romans could sink into after a hot bath.

It was partially destroyed in an earthquake between 540AD and 620AD, filling the room with rubble. Archaeologists have been excavating the room for the past 12 years. "

    • Jordanian artist wants to build statue in Sderot

Avid peace supporter Ahmed Khalifa wants to build peace status with Sderot

Israel's embassy in Amman and the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem received an unusual requested this week: A Jordanian artist expressed his interest in visiting Sderot and building a statue of peace in the southern city along with local children.

The artist, Ahmed Khalifa, is a sculptor and painter known for his enthusiastic support for peace with Israel, despite the treaty's unpopularity in Jordan. Khalifa does not shy away from openly maintaining contacts with the Israeli embassy, and in the past built statues for the Peres Center for Peace.

Recently, Khalifa turned to the Jerusalem city hall and asked to place a statue in the capital in order to promote peace. Several days ago, he presented his work at a Jerusalem fair.

"It is important for me to convey a message against violence and the firing of Qassams through the statue," Khalifa said. "It hurts me to hear about every rocket that lands in the city. I want to come in order to bear a message of peace and support from Jordan. We must show that in the Arab world too there are voices that oppose the Qassams."

The Jordanian artist said he does not fear an attack because of his initiative. "When you do something good, you shouldn't fear anyone," he said.

Sderot's Mayor Eli Moyal pledged to assist Khalifa in realizing his mission.

"I laud such initiatives and I'm happy that some people in the Arab world think differently," he said. "We'll be glad to cooperate with any peace initiative."

    • 1800-year-old Elvis Presley sculpture

It looks like Elvis might have been rocking Rome almost 2,000 years ago after a marble carving - the spitting-image of the king - was revealed.

The 1,800-year-old Roman bust is now due to go under the hammer as part of a £1 million auction at Bonhams in London.

Dating back to 400 BC it bares a striking resemblance with Elvis, down to the over-the-top quiff and distinctive jaw line.

Fans would be forgiven for thinking that their idol may well have lived a previous life in Rome.

A spokesman for Bonhams, said: "The likeness is so great that Graham Geddes, the collector himself calls the carving "Elvis."
"It is perhaps the strangest item in the sale, certainly to modern eyes."

The 'Elvis' bust is one of 150 lots, which once belonged to Australian collector Graham Geddes, which will be auctioned in October, other items include rare Greek and Roman vases and marble reliefs portraying battle scenes.

This article is about a young girl asking a simple question "Why are there only statues of white men there?''. It's in response to CarolynGillis' current.topic simple solutions to critical problems. Most critical problems are critical because we have complicated the issues.
To solve critical problems, we have to ask the simple questions. Only then can we find the simple answers. The most important part of this article is the question asked by the little girl. You don't have to be a world leader, or "mover and shaker" to get justice for others. Usually asking that simplest of questions, what can I do to help, will start things moving in the right direction.

    • Monument to be erected to an enema in southern Russia

MOSCOW, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - A statue is to be unveiled to an enema at a health center in the southern Russia's town of Zheleznovodsk, the center director said on Monday.

The 1.5 meter-high bronze monument, weighing 350 kilograms (771.6 pounds), portrays "three angel-like children carrying above their heads a big pear-like enema," the Alexander Kharchenko said.

"This will be the first monument to an enema in the world," he said, adding that the initiative to erect the monument was proposed by the center's administration, where hundreds of similar procedures are carried out every day.

"It is high time a monument to an enema was erected," he said.

SERIOUSLY! These things need more good PR. They are good for you and it should be known publicly.

    • Madame Tussauds Defends Its Plan For Wax Hitler Statue In Berlin

Madame Tussauds is defending its decision to include a wax likeness of Adolf Hitler at its new Berlin museum, arguing that it doesn't make any sense to ignore his role in German history.

In a statement, the museum said Hitler's rule "stands for an important, though also appalling, turning point in the development of modern Europe. To ignore Hitler's role in this era would allow a strange gap to develop in the German and Berlin history that we show from chancellor Otto von Bismarck to the present day."

    • India plans huge 'liberty' statue

The government of the Indian state of Maharashtra says it plans to build a statue off the Mumbai (Bombay) coast to rival New York's Statue of Liberty.

The statue will be of the Maratha warrior king Shivaji, considered a hero in Maharashtra for his defiance of Mughal and British forces. The statue will be built on a man-made island, which will include a library, a museum and an amphitheatre.

Critics say the project is too expensive at more than $4.5m. They say that the government of the western Indian state faces more pressing problems, such as a food, water and power crisis in addition to a high suicide level among farmers.

Vishal Dhage, a state government official, said the statue would be about the same height as the Statue of Liberty - which, with plinth includes, stands at 305ft.
