    • Beheaded wax Hitler returns looking more dishevelled

Nine weeks after a visitor tore off the dictator's head, Madame Tussauds has repaired its wax figure of Adolf Hitler and put him back on display in Berlin. The new Hitler is protected by a thick wall, glass and two security guards to prevent a new assassination attempt. In addition, he looks even more dishevelled than the original figure.

Madame Tussauds had defied criticism that it was tasteless and inappropriate to display the figure of a man who caused so much suffering. A spokesperson stated: "Madame Tussauds is apolitical and neither comments on nor judges the people shown in the exhibition or what they did in the course of their life. The figures are selected according to their popularity or their significance in having a decisive impact on history, be that good or bad. Adolf Hitler represents a decisive part of Berlin's history that cannot be denied."

Interestingly, the appearance of the new figure has been changed slightly to make him seem even more pathetic. Hitler's hair is more dishevelled than before and his tie is loosened around his collar. He's also shown looking down rather than straight ahead, and the huge map of Europe has been removed from the wall next to him.

    • The 'Jewish Hitler': Nazi-descendant lives in Israel as Orthodox Jew

In Jewish circles, the term 'penitents' is sometimes used to describe children of Nazis who become Jews to try to expiate the sins of their fathers. According to this article, a subculture of Nazi-descended Jews exists in Israel, where even a relative of Adolf Hitler himself now lives as an Orthodox Jew.

The Jewish Hitler-relative, who wishes to remain anonymous, works as a professor at the Jewish studies faculty at one of the universities in Israel. He is a descendant of Hitler's half-brother, Alois Junior, but stresses that he does not have any blood or DNA from the Hitler branch of his family. According to him, his mother severed all connections with the Hitlers and was beaten for refusing to go to Hitler Youth events as a teenager. His father, on the other hand, was a major in the Wehrmacht and therefore, barring a miracle, killed people for Hitler.

Read the article to find out more about the 'Jewish Hitler' and other Nazi-descended Jews. What do you make of their stories and motives?

    • Hitler's private collection goes virtual

A musuem in Berlin has put the legendary Linz Collection, Hitler's private collection of art, online. It may be the first time since World War II that the all the pieces have been assembled in one place.

Adolf Hitler's notorious "Linz Collection" -- a private collection of art displayed in Linz and then stashed in salt mines at the end of World War II -- has now been put online in digital form by the German Historical Musem, not for casual viewing but to help track the provenance of some pieces.

The Führer's taste ran to bucolic idylls and precious German Romanticism, in particular 19th century painters from Vienna and Munich. He ignored, famously, "degenerate" art by realistic or socially biting artists -- among them the mightiest names of the 20th century -- but he managed to assemble a large and not insignificant private collection.

He wanted to use the art as the kernel of a large "Führermuseum," which he hoped to build in Linz, Austria, by 1950. For two years before 1945 some art was displayed in Linz, where the Austrian-born Hitler spent part of his youth. Hitler's foundation to support the museum was called the Sonderauftrag Linz, or "Special Project: Linz," and financed by proceeds from his book, Mein Kampf.

    • Hitler's secret Indian army

BBC documentary reveals secret history behind thousands of Indian soldiers serving in the British Army who traded allegiance to Adolf Hitler during the second World War.

This was an attempt to push the British out of India, and with the help of the German foreign ministry, left-wing Indian revolutionary, Subhas Bose set up, "The Free India Centre" broadcasting in support of this cause, which was recognized by Hitler's regime.

      As the BBC reports:

By the end of 1941, Hitler's regime officially recognised his provisional "Free India Government" in exile, and even agreed to help Chandra Bose raise an army to fight for his cause. It was to be called "The Free India Legion".

Bose hoped to raise a force of about 100,000 men which, when armed and kitted out by the Germans, could be used to invade British India.

He decided to raise them by going on recruiting visits to Prisoner-of-War camps in Germany which, at that time, were home to tens of thousands of Indian soldiers captured by Rommel in North Africa.

This information was given to British intelligence by three senior German officers near the end of WWII. It was classified as extremely sensitive and was not to be released before 2021. The BBC was given access to the secret file.

    • Nazi treasure Hunt

German treasure hunters began digging Tuesday for what they say may be plunder buried by the Nazis in a man-made cavern near the Czech border.

      Treasure Hunt Ends (From CNN)
      http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/science/02/28/nazi.gold/in...

      From NY Daily News:
"German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Russian President Vladimir Putin and their wives admire the Amber Room at its re-opening in the Catherine Palace in 2003.

In a development straight out of an Indiana Jones movie, treasure hunters claim to have discovered two tons of looted Nazi gold, believed to have been plundered from the legendary Russian Amber Room during World War II.

The discovery of a hidden cavern containing crates believed to be filled with crates containing precious metals occurred over the weekend near the Deutscheudorf, Germany.

Digging will take weeks and involve engineers and explosive experts to check for possible booby-traps left by Nazis hinted at in documents that led the expedition to the current site, Heinz-Peter Haustein, one of the treasure hunters, told a British paper.

"It's gold, maybe silver," Haustein said. "We expect it to be either gold from the Amber Room or gold that would give us clues to another hiding place."

Haustein, a member of the German Parliament, has spent years searching for the Amber Room treasure, through rumors of secret railways. The tip that led to the cavern came from the son of a Luftwaffe signaler during the war. The documents reportedly contained co-ordinates of locations where the Nazis supposedly hid gold towards the end of the war.

Once called "the eighth wonder of the world" for its elaborate gold leaf craftsmanship, The Amber Room was created in 1716 as a gift to Tsar Peter the Great."

    • Now dig low, low, low, low for that Hitler gold

Digging has resumed at a site in the southeastern German town of Deutschneudorf, where treasure hunters believe there are almost 2 tons of Nazi gold and possibly clues to the whereabouts of the legendary Amber Room, a prize taken from a Russian castle during World War II.

Heinz Peter Haustein, one of the two treasure hunters and a member of Germany's parliament, said: "We have already hit a hollow area under the surface, it's filled with water and we are not sure if it is the cave we are looking for."

    • Weatherspoon's flagship not proving a Hitler...

Respectable UK pub chain, J.D.Weatherspoons has found itself in a bit of hot water over a sign at one of their flagship pubs. The 'soon to open' John Masefield pub in the Wirral's Rock Ferry has quickly become known to locals as 'The Adolf' due to a stunning resemblance between local poet John Masefield and the Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler. The pubs' manager, Seanie Wilson claimed the likeness hadn't been noticed until the sign had been erected. Rumours are already flying around that the sign may be switched before the pubs' Monday opening, to save any offence from both the pub' and J.D.Weatherspoons. • Hitler's globe fetches £50,000 at auction - five times its estimate

A globe that once belonged to Adolf Hitler has sold at auction in San Francisco for £50,000 - more than five times its estimate.

An American soldier found the globe among the ruins of Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" in the Bavarian Alps in May 1945.
John Barsamian took it home and kept it for more than 60 years - along with all the military paperwork that allowed him to take the globe to the U.S.

Greg Martin, proprietor of the auction house that handled the sale and had estimated the item at £10,000, said: "This is probably the most airtight documentation I've run across in some time.

"We have pictures of the guy there at the time, standing in the ruins holding the globe like a newborn baby.

Eagle's Nest: Hitler studies a map at his retreat in the Bavarian Alps
"The guy is a meticulous record keeper."
The 91-year-old was at the sale yesterday with his son Barry when San Francisco entrepreneur Bob Pritikin placed the winning bid.

He had found the globe in the ruins of Hitler's home in Berchtesgaden.

Other soldiers had already looted the inside of his private residence, even stripping the leather from furniture.

Nearly everything of value was gone - except for the Fuhrer's globe.

"Literally, the place is all bombed out and here this globe is sitting there on the desk," he said.

He boxed it up with a few other keepsakes, including a pistol and a dagger, and shipped them home to Oakland in California.

"Hardly anyone knew I had it," he added
