    • Tree Nation:Tree Planting Goal of 30,000 Set For 2008

For 2008, Tree Nation had to plan how many trees will go into their nursery in Niger. So they took the bet that their community will reach 30.000 trees to plant in August. The ultimate goal of Tree Nation is to plant 8 million trees in the shape of a heart in the heart of Niger to mitigate deforestation and poverty. A most worthy goal.

Planting trees is a simple yet effective way to offset the burning of fossil fuels that causes global warming/ climate change. Especially in Niger, where extreme drought and poverty have left many in famine and disease.

So if you are interested in helping this organization reach its goal, you can visit their site and get information on how to help them plant trees in Niger. I have so far contributed about 15 trees through my climate messenger petititon and hope to do more this year. There are ways we here can influence events around the world positively. This is one great way. Planting trees saves lives.

    • Tree Nation: A Heart In The Sahara

Maxime Renaudin comes from a new generation of entrepreneurs who use sound business principles to tackle social problems in the world today.

He is also a photographer, and photography for him is a means to "help [to] see what we should value and what we should protect." But whether Maxime is engaged in business or photography, he is very definite about the purpose of his work. It is a means to contribute to social progress.

The answer to that calling is Tree-nation.com a for-profit organization based in Barcelona, Spain which Maxime runs together with his partners Andrew Pothecary and Agro-Forestry expert Aboubacar Ichaou.

Their mission: to plant 8 million trees in the shape of a giant heart in the Sahara. This heart is intended to be a testament for mankind's love for nature, and will be visible from the sky. Tree-nation is also a supporter of the Billion Tree project of UNEP.

In my interview with Maxime, he talked about the importance of planting a heart of 8 million trees to combat the negative effects of desertification and deforestation in the Sahara. He also discussed Tree-nation's unique way of achieving this mission by using the latest social networking tools and GPS technology and by engaging ordinary citizens to help their cause. He also explained why planting trees is the best way to combat climate change and eradicate global poverty.

    • The Tree Nation Project is Growing

From slightly over 1000 members to over 25,000 members in only a year's time, Tree Nation is growing. It's goal is to plant 8 million trees in the shape of a heart in the heart of Niger, the poorest country in the world that is suffering from desertification and poverty. Over 11,000 trees have been planted so far but there is a long way to go. I am proud to report that some of the trees planted are in response to my petition there asking people to pledge to become climate messengers. It is so gratifying to see people from all over the world coming together to sign the petition and pledge to do all they can to keep our world from reaching the tipping point. To some these trees may not mean much, but to the people of Niger they mean the world, they mean hope, and they mean life. So if you are looking for a good organization to work with to bring sustainability to a part of the world that desperately needs it, Tree Nation is a great place to start. • Over 11,000 trees planted in Niger

Through my petition linked, and the work of many others, Tree -Nation is planting thousands of trees in the heart of Niger to mitigate deforestation and poverty. It may not seem like much to some, but this is a very important step in bringing balance back to a country torn by drought, deforestation, poverty, and climate change. I believe wholeheartedly that from endeavors like this taken on by grassroots organizations that have a true caring for this planet will come the chance to restore some of that balance. There may not be much some can do to contribute to solving the climate crisis, or so they think. Signing this petition will help plant trees, and also it is easy to plant one yourself. Trees are the lungs of our planet and the more we plant can only do her good. I am proud to be a part of a group that is doing something positive to help not only to save Niger but our Earth. • Carbon Sink Capacity In Northern Forests Reduced By Global Warming

The human race has gotten itself into quite a conundrum. We haven't made a real effort yet to mitigate the 70 million tons of C02 we spew into the atmosphere every day... so now, the oceans have reached their capacity for absorbing it and studies are showing that trees are also reaching limits in Northern forests. And on top of that we continue to deforest areas for greed thus contributing to the drought that covered 40% of this country and 35 % of the entire world last year that is pervasive and continuing. So as 2007 was the year of awakenings for many, 2008 must be the year that awakening leads to loud demands to politicians for leadership on this and solutions across the board. Many cities and states have not disappointed and have taken action. However, we now need to turn it up a notch because once our oceans and our trees are no longer able to balance the amount of Co2 we spew into the atmosphere through absorption the results will be an unsustainable planet for our children and that simply is not an option. So for 2008 make a resolution that you will plant a tree. It is something simple but it is something that this Earth desperately needs to heal her. The human race has gotten itself into quite a conundrum. We haven't made a real effort yet to mitigate the 70 million tons of C02 we s... more

    • You Can Plant Trees In Niger

This link will lead you to a report of the first trees planred by Tree Nation, an organization sponsored by the UN Environment Programme seeking to plant trees in the shape of a heart in the heart of Niger where deforestation is taking a huge toll on the land, the environment, and its people. As a member of Tree Nation I also have a petition up on their site asking people to pledge to be climate messengers with their signatures helping to plant trees, and I am very happy to see these trees being planted. It does my heart good to know that I am doing something to help mitigate deforestation and poverty in this region of the world that needs it so desperately. I also believe that planting trees is not something to be dismissed in the solutions to the climate crisis. I hope if you take a look at the work these good people are doing that you too will join in helping to plant trees in Niger. • More Than One Billion Trees Planted in 2007: UN

This is fantastic news and shows that the environment is something we all feel connected to. Regardless of what you believe about climate change and its causes, our connection to this planet and our responsibilty as good stewards to her is undeniable. Hopefully, these trees being planted will be able to balance out the losses we are suffering through deforestation. Only when we do see the higher consciousness and the moral imperatives involved in taking care of our home will we see the solutions before us. I have been proud to be a part of Tree Nation in helping to plant trees in Niger and will continue to be involved with that initiative in the coming year. I think the U.S. Congress should also announce a major tree planting initiative in this country to help further that goal in the coming year. Trees are the lungs of our planet and provide us with sustinence, coolness, water, food, inspiration, spiritual renewal, and are a home to many other species. My heart is with the trees, so to read this is so gratifying. Perhaps there is hope afterall. http://www.greenbeltmovement.org/ The Green Belt Movement site, founded by Dr. Wangari Maathai.

    • Take part in saving the planet. Plant a tree in Niger

This is a link to a petition I have at a great site named Tree Nation. Tree Nation is a site started recently (with the endorsement of the UN Environment Programme) with the goal of planting 8 million trees in the shape of a heart in the heart of the desert in Niger, Africa. Niger is the one country experiencing the most devastating effects of deforestation, namely drought and famine that have killed thousands of people mainly children.

This site attempts to do a great thing to help mitigate deforestation and poverty, and by people signing my petition Tree Nation is planting a tree in Niger for every one hundred signatures. This is very dear to my heart, and is why I addressed the petition to the Honorable Al Gore, because his movie An Inconvenient Truth was the global catalyst for a worldwide awakening that has now culminated in more governments seeking to take action, individuals becoming more aware of their moral responsibility to this pale blue dot, our only home, and a heightening of not only awareness, but in seeing the opportunities before us that take us from that awareness away from despair.

And yes, while the forecast looks bleaker than was thought, the human spirit is something I still believe in. That is why I started this petition not only in honor of that spirit and to help Tree Nation grow, but because I love this planet and I love trees and see them as part of the grand solution. And too, because I respect and love Al Gore very much and believe that his work on this crisis is what will carry us through this with hope.

So please, pledge to do all you can as an indiviidual to be a part of the solution and to be the change you wish to see in this world. For me, there is no greater accomplishment we can make in life, and I thank you.
