    • Muslim Children gassed at Dayton mosque after "Obsession" DVD hits Ohio

On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail -- were distributed by mail in Ohio, a "chemical irritant" was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service.

The room that the chemical was sprayed into was the room where babies and children were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers.

    • 'Gay things need to die', says man accused of brutally killing transgend...

A man accused of brutally beating a transgender woman to death told his girlfriend in a phone call from prison that he "snapped" and that “gay things need to die.”

Allen Andrade, 31, was charged with the murder of transgender woman Angie Zapata, 18, who was found dead in her apartment on July 17 2008. Andrade had told investigators that he had met Zapata on a social networking site and that the two met with the intention of having a sexual relationship. Apparently, Zapata performed oral sex on Andrade but refused to let him touch her. When Andrade was left alone in Zapata's apartment, he found several photographs that made him question Zapata's sex. When he confronted her, she told him "I am all woman." Andrade then grabbed Zapata's crotch area, felt male genitalia and became angry. He proceeded to take a fire extinguisher off a shelf and struck Zapata twice in the head, telling investigators he thought he "killed it."

In the phone calls from prison, Andrade expressed that he was out of control, outside himself and not a coherent person the day of the murder. The calls were also laden with derogatory remarks towards homosexuals, and he stated that people in jail are scared of him because of his reputation for wielding a fire extinguisher, which is the suspected murder weapon. When Andrade’s girlfriend said her cell phone was dying during a call, he said that was gay and that gay things need to die.

Weld District Court Judge Marcelo Kopcow ruled today that there was probable cause for first degree murder after deliberation, a felony bias-motivated crime.

    • Date arrested in Greeley transgender murder

An enraged Allen Ray Andrade beat 21-year-old Angie Zapata with his fists and a fire extinguisher after he discovered Zapata, who gave him oral sex the day before, was physically a man, say Greeley police.

Allen Ray Andrade never referred to his alleged victim as a she or he. Just "it."
That alone speaks to the brutality of the crime committed against 21-year-old Angie Zapata, said a group that has been speaking for Zapata's family.

"You get the sense that maybe he wasn't seeing Angie as a person," said Crystal Middlestadt, director of Training and Education for the Colorado Anti-Violence Program. "Then you get an idea of the violence behind this act."

    • Is Killing Liberals a Hate Crime?

A man who the police say entered a Unitarian Universalist church in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sunday and shot eight people, killing two, was motivated by a hatred for liberals and gay people, Chief Sterling P. Owen IV of the Knoxville Police Department said Monday.

“It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement,” Chief Owen said of the suspect, Jim D. Adkisson, 58. “We have recovered a four-page letter in which he describes his feelings and the reason that he claims he committed these offenses.”

According to a search warrant for Mr. Adkisson’s house filed by the police, during interrogation Mr. Adkisson admitted to the shooting and said “he had targeted the church because of its liberal leanings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country.”

Mr. Adkisson was not a member of the church and congregants said they did not recognize him, but two people said his former wife had once attended the church, Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist.

Mr. Adkisson was arrested at the scene and has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. More charges are expected, and Chief Owen said the police were treating the shooting as a hate crime.

The authorities and witnesses said the gunman, carrying a guitar case that concealed a 12-gauge shotgun, entered the church just as a children’s performance of “Annie Jr.” started.

Standing near the door of the sanctuary, he opened fire. Chief Owen said the man had fired only three blasts, but had 73 more rounds of ammunition with him. Mr. Adkisson’s letter indicated that he expected to be shot and killed by the police when they arrived, Chief Owen said, but church members tackled and subdued him.

    • Town struggles with fallout from immigrant's fatal beating

By the time help arrived, Luis Ramirez lay convulsing in the middle of the street, foam running from his mouth.
Blows had struck the 25-year-old Mexican immigrant with such force that they left a clotted, bruised impression of Jesus Christ on the skin of his chest from the religious medal he wore.

His attackers were white teenagers, including star students and football players, witnesses told police.

After a night of drinking, the teens taunted the undocumented worker with racial epithets, pummeled him to the ground and then kicked him in the head, court documents charge. He died in a hospital two days later.

It took almost two weeks for arrests to be made. But on July 25, Colin J. Walsh, 17, and Brandon J. Piekarsky, 16, were charged as adults with homicide and ethnic intimidation.

Derrick M. Donchak, 18, was charged as an adult with aggravated assault and ethnic intimidation and an unnamed juvenile was also charged with assault. The U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday that its civil rights division has opened a criminal investigation.

Defense attorneys for two of the teens say Ramirez responded to the name-calling with his own insults, which escalated the confrontation into to a fight that got out of hand.

The words allegedly hurled at Ramirez, and the perceived sentiments behind them, led prosecutors to label his death a hate crime.

Without the ethnic intimidation charges, many in Shenandoah believe the case would not be drawing attention to this depressed northeastern Pennsylvania coal town of 5,000. Residents question whether the attack was racially motivated or just an alcohol-fueled confrontation among kids.

Ramirez was taken off life support two days after the fight. His body was flown back to his mother in Guanajuato, Mexico, with donations from parishioners from Annunciation Church in Shenandoah.

"There's outrage among Anglos and Latinos over what happened, and I think that's representative of the attitude here," said the Rev. George Winne, who is in charge of Hispanic ministries at Annunciation.

Others in town pull over their cars at the sight of a stranger and recite a litany of attacks allegedly perpetrated by Latinos against Anglos. They refuse to give their names but acknowledge that Ramirez did not deserve to die. They say violence has been brewing between the races for some time.

Attorneys for two of the teens deny Ramirez was targeted because of his race.

"Let's call it what it was it was -- a street fight, a chance encounter with a tragic outcome," said Frederick Fanelli, who represents Piekarsky.

Fanelli told CNN he plans to investigate whether Ramirez has a criminal background. He also questions why the engaged father of three was walking on the street with the girl, and the nature of their relationship. Ramirez' fiancee says he was walking her younger sister home.

A lawyer for Walsh said he is equally skeptical about the ethnic intimidation charge. "They called each other names. The victim was calling them obscenities, vulgar names, and they said things back to him that would hurt him," Roger Laguna said. "It just means it was a foul-mouthed argument, not ethnic intimidation."

Ramirez died just as things were falling into place for him and Crystal Dillman, 24, the woman he planned to marry.

    • Holocaust Denier found guilty of 2007 attack on Nobel Laureate

Guilty Verdict for Wiesel Attacker Sends a Message to Holocaust Deniers

New York, NY, July 22, 2008 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called the guilty verdict for the Holocaust denier who attacked Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel a just one, saying it "sends a resounding message to violent Holocaust deniers and other anti-Semites that when they act out their hatred they will pay a price."

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor, issued the following statement:

The conviction of Eric Hunt of multiple charges for his bias-motivated attack on Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel in February 2007 is just and sends a resounding message to violent Holocaust deniers and other anti-Semites that when they act out their hatred they will pay a price.

The people of San Francisco and its law enforcement and judicial institutions have made it clear that violence motivated by hate is unacceptable in civil society and that there will be consequences for those who act out their bigotry.

After two weeks of testimony, during which the jury heard details about Hunt's advocacy of Holocaust denial, they found him guilty of felony false imprisonment charges with a hate-crime enhancement based on the fact that Wiesel is Jewish. Hunt, 24, of New Jersey, was also convicted misdemeanor battery and elder abuse charges. Hunt is scheduled to be sentenced August 18. He faces up to three years in prison.

    • Anti-gay slurs painted on houses and cars in South Florida's gayest neighborh...

"Three homes and five vehicles were sprayed with anti-gay slogans in the 2800 block of NW 7th Ave in Wilton Manors early Friday morning.

One resident was using soap and water to wash out the anti-gay messages sprayed on his property that said "fag".

He explained to CBS4 Reporter Ted Scouten that he's not gay, which is all the more worrying why he was a target.

Another resident, Ron Helfrich, said his home and car were defaced, "They wrote gay on the door, in the living room, and on the couch."

''There's no reason for this to happen,'' Aaron Challancin said. ``We didn't do anything to anyone. We're normal people trying to live normal lives.

The incidents are being investigated by the Wilton Manors police department."

    • Hate Crime or College Prank?

An incident last week at University of Washington's Delta Upsilon fraternity is under scrutiny for potential racial motivation. The Seattle Police Department (SPD) responded to a call last Sunday at 10 p.m. at the Delta Upsilon fraternity on 19th Avenue Northeast. According to a witness, a group of young men standing on the fraternity balcony were engaged in an exchange with a passer-by below. The men threw water balloons at two people, including the man with whom they were engaged in the exchange with, and allegedly yelled anti-immigrant slurs, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer. The SPD has documented the incident as assault, a misdemeanor, and malicious harassment, a felony. According to the P.I., neither victim was located after police responded. Until a victim comes forward there will not be an SPD investigation. An incident last week at University of Washington's Delta Upsilon fraternity is under scrutiny for potential racial motivation.
