    • Sheffield United win case against West Ham United over Carlos Tevez affair

West Ham United face paying massive damages in compensation to Sheffield United after an independent tribunal ruled against the Premier League club over the Carlos Tevez affair.

Kevin McCabe, the Sheffield United chairman, refused to be drawn on how much his club would get but reports suggest it could be as much as £30 million.

"I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling," McCabe said this morning. "The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour. The matter is still legally in process so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process."

Sheffield United argued that West Ham won at least three points inspired by Tevez during the 2006-07 season, when the player was illegally registered to the Upton Park club. This cost Sheffield United relegation to the Championship and the revenue earned by being in the top flight.

    • Italy to pay $5B to Libya for occupation

Italy agreed to pay Libya $5 billion as compensation for its 30-year occupation of the country ending in 1943, the Libyan foreign minister told reporters Saturday.

Abdel-Rahman Shalgam said that visiting Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is set to sign a memorandum pledging a $5 billion compensation package consisting of construction projects, student grants, and pensions for Libyans who served with the Italians during the Second World War.

"It is a material and emotional recognition of the mistakes that our country has done to yours during the colonial era," Berlusconi told reporters at the airport on his arrival. "This agreement opens the path to further cooperation."

In return, Italy wants Libya to crack down on illegal migrants turning up on Italian shores and will fund $500 million worth of electronic monitoring devices on the Libyan coastline.

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi received Berlusconi under a big tent in Benghazi where they discussed the agreement over lunch. The Italian leader said $200 million of the package would be for infrastructure projects over the next 25 years, including a coastal highway stretching across the country from Tunisia to Egypt.

Berlusconi's office said in a statement that the premier would also hand over the Venus of Cyrene, an ancient Roman statue taken in 1913 by Italian troops from the ruins of the Greek and Roman settlement of Cyrene, on the Libyan coast.

Relations between the two countries have warmed over the last few years, with Italian leaders meeting Gadhafi several times. However it has taken years of negotiations for the two sides to hammer out a deal on compensation for Italy's rule over Libya from 1911 to 1943

Libya named Aug. 30, Libyan-Italian Friendship Day.

    • 'Amazing hydration diet' woman awarded £810,000

A woman was awarded more than £800,000 after she suffered permanent brain damage while on a detox diet. Dawn Page, 52, claims she was told to drink more water and reduce her salt intake during The Amazing Hydration Diet.

The High Court was told she suffered uncontrollable vomiting after starting the diet, but nutritionist Barbara Nash assured her it was part of the detoxification process. Mrs Nash's insurance company agreed to pay out £810,000 although she denied any wrongdoing.

In October 2001 when she was less than a week into the regime, she suffered an epileptic fit and was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon. Doctors were unable to prevent her suffering permanent brain damage and her memory, speech and concentration have been affected.

    • Woman gets £7200 payout from shoe shop after stiletto breaks and so does her ankle

A young British woman has won a £7k payout from a shoe company after the stilettos she bought from them broke, causing her to break her ankle, and British newspapers have gone crazy over the precedent that this sets for future claims on faulty footwear.

I personally think anyone who's stupid enough to wear stilettos deserves any pain they get (footwear that *prevents you from being able to run away* is frankly disturbing ladies, and it sure isn't sexy) but why take my word for it? The Guardian's Ariane Sherine puts it far more cleverly and convincingly (vitriolic I can manage - funny, not so much). She even tells a really good drug joke.

Has our compensation culture gone crazy? If you put on a pair of shoes that will almost certainly involve some kind of tottering, is it anyone's responsibility but yours if an injury occurs?

    • Shock at compensation for death crash mother

THE FAMILY of a mother killed in a road accident by a dangerous driver may receive just £15,000 compensation for her death.
Sasha Roberts, 40, from The Course, Lewes, died on September 7 2006, when a lorry hit her car on the hard shoulder of the M2.

Her son Lio Spinelli was also in car and suffered life-threatening injuries and brain damage.

The lorry driver was later jailed for two-and-a-half years after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

But Mr Spinelli recently received the shocking news that they could receive just £15,000 compensation for Sasha's tragic death.

He told the Express: 'The somewhat astonishing news, is that despite all of the anguish and the tears we have endured this past year-and-a-half our situation probably does not fall within the very limited definition of "pain and suffering" established by British law.

'So a claim for that seems unlikely.

'More stunning even than this is that the maximum claim for the loss of a mother (for the entire life of the child) and the maximum claim for the loss of a spouse, have been capped by British law at £5,000 and £10,000 respectively.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Life is indeed cheap,,,some places just a bit more than others.

      RIP Sasha Roberts

    • Study: hourly workers think differently about time

From a new Stanford study: If someone sees their time as having a financial worth, then it follows that any time they don't spend earning money is essentially lost revenue. DeVoe and Pfeffer found that of over 10,000 employees, those who were paid by the hour were significantly more likely to say that, given the choice, they would choose to work more hours for more money, rather than fewer hours for less money.
